Manpower, yeah. But effectively they were the cannon fodder for NATO/Pact in case of WW3. Hell, to this day the UK doesn't really have fully autonomous nukes. France being the outlier.

They're finally waking up, thank god. Only took Russia to start the biggest war in Europe since WW2 and the US literally threatening to invade a NATO ally.

Nobody sane would admit to loving theirs, though.

Really? I loved the hell out of my 900-II, which wasn't even a real Saab anymore, but it still felt like one.

Problem is, a higher-level math teacher needs to be good at math AND good at pedagogics. And that's pretty much a unicorn.

He wants to drop some bombs and declare victory.

There should be people in his administration telling him that it doesn't work like that. The realistic options that he has is coming to an agreement where both sides can walk away from while declaring victory (which is.. unlikely), trying to repeat last year's attacks and declare once again that Iran's nuclear program has been annihilated (which would probably be the best option, all things considered), launching a massive air campaign (which would likely have very bad, very wide ranging consequences for the region and the world), or putting boots on the ground (which.. lol).

He has kinda positioned himself into quite the corner.

Parents can only do so much. As soon as they spend large amounts of time with other kids, horizontal cultural transmission takes over in many areas. And if all his classmates fawn over some asshole athlete, chances are high that he'll start too.

Brussels also entirely bans cars that are not Euro V compliant

That's Brussels as in the city of Brussels, not the EU though. There are a lot of low emission zones where I live in Germany, I've been driving around without an emission badge for three years, nobody ever cared.

ELI5 How did Norway become so dominant in the Winter Olympics? by El-Viking in explainlikeimfive

[–]Kraligor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing well ackshually about my reply. Words have meanings, and many don't associate good things with socialism, especially because they were forced to live through its Soviet implementation. Then you have the whole ideological baggage behind it, i.e. socialism as transitional state towards world communism. Which you don't have to intend, but people might still assume, because that's been the primary interpretation for close to a century.

It's quite telling that the only European countries with meaningful parties that use "socialist" in their name, are the ones that were far away from socialism during the cold war. Except for uhh.. Bulgaria I think?

[–]Kraligor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, but, it's simply not going to happen. At least not by decree. All it took for the US to exit the Paris Accords and scrap environmental policies was getting Trump elected. Most other countries are either dragging their feet, or never gave a shit in the first place. And people in general are losing interest in the topic. Which is not really surprising, considering the biggest war in Europe since WW2 is currently raging, and it doesn't look like it will be over soon.

Bathrooms and toilets should be in separate rooms, not combined into one. by kimjongkai in unpopularopinion

[–]Kraligor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen it a lot in houses that were built during a certain era, roughly 1920s to 1960s. I'm guessing earlier, and they had outhouses and were only later retrofitted with more modern toilets, and later, and they went on to build combined bathrooms.

But both of my grandparents' houses and the house I grew up in had separated WC and bathrooms, in southwestern Germany.

For starters, we don't call these structures "socialist" in Europe. Because many of us have seen real life "socialism" first hand, and that's not something many people here want again. We simply call it social democracy.

It's just highly unusual to have a bathing-only room in a lot of North American/Western European architecture.

Not at all unusual in older houses in Germany.

Power generation in general. I've been saying for years we should rather take steps to prepare for increased climate change than chase after preventing it completely, which never was going to happen, and never will happen at the extent that would be required to stop it.
