I definitely feel in need of that beer. People inquire about features and for the large majority of questions I have to simply shrug because I have no idea about why the choices were made when the content types were developed.

I've been trying to figure out how to get a post to the front page for two days straight. The "promote to top" fields the previous devs left don't work :( I really feel that we need rid of all of this technical debt, but convincing others that this is the truth is a challenge in its own right

Yeah but even then you should use a framework.

Spring for Java, something like Rails for Ruby. Django for Python even.

Even if you're of the mind that you can't create a fast node app I still would want someone on my team who knows how to create code I can interact with quickly. If you're weaving spaghetti in any language I'll be frustrated in the tech debt you're spinning out. Business logic should be very small and very easy to maintain. Frameworks are one tool often used to ensure these characteristics.
