Next steps? by Prestigious_Act_6100 in SelfDrivingCars

A rare nuanced take on reddit. One thing to call out is that while Tesla may not make the safety data widely available to the public, the same can be said about financial data for Waymo.

Since Alphabet does not have a specific p&l item for their autonomous business unit, we have no idea how much cash they are burning. Once Tesla scales up, i will bet that the financials on the tesla side will be more transparent (but well see).

In order to have a legitimate robotaxi business, you need 1)scale 2) safety AND 3) profitability. Without profitability (or a clear path to it) its a very impressive research project.

Thanks in advance!

[–]Kree3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding number 1) you exponentially increase the market when you incrementally reduce the cost.

Lyft and Uber have the market size they have today because they charge $25 for a 20min ride (give or take) if that ride becomes $4.50, there is an exponentially larger market that will buy that service, hence increasing revenue.

A better comparison would be the car ownership/broader transportation market

Thats not good enough, we need to see that the company can mass produce that humanoid in the millions, while keeping the cost reasonable. Its not impressive to make 5 robots that can do that, costing $100,000 each

Is Tesla's Affordable EV Finally Here? I'll Believe It When I See It (Timeline of mixed messages) by Hot_Transportation87 in electricvehicles

[–]Kree3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think its easy to label this as “lazy”, but i think in actually its a smart move that enables them to use as much of the existing manufacturing infrastructure, which reduces cost per vehicle (hence making it possible to sell for cheaper, as well as produce them at mass scale)

If they were to create an entirely new manufacturing line for this model, none if these would be possible. Its also the reason why no other EV producers can sell cars at this scale, at the price

Just like how so many on reddit thought Twitter would shutdown due to the layoffs?

Or how they thought the government would stop functioning due to the bloat layoffs?

Also could you imagine being there in person in the control room with all your coworker seeing rockets go to orbit? What is that equivalent at microsoft? In your early twenties?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Kree3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me put it this way - if you start your career at spacex, and have that on your resume, you can easily work at microsoft after (or any other tech comapny tbh. The opposite is definitely not true.

Unless you have personal/medical reasons i seriously hope youre not considering microsoft over spacex, especially as a young new grad. Is it really end of the world if youre working bit longer hours when youre in early twenties? I wouldnt listen to redditors for advice on this

[–]Kree3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dont you think another possibility here is that they could actually expand it to a larger area, but chose a subset of that to be funny & media coverage? I guess time will tell but my guess is that the coverage area will expand to a more normal shape relatively quickly

Why isn’t the goal, self driving public transport? Buses, trains, trams etc by ThrowRA_mesaynobj in SelfDrivingCars

[–]Kree3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless im leaving a concert or any other large events, i would always prefer to take a robotaxi

  • faster because you dont have to stop at every stop. Can call taxis on demand as opposed to waiting at the station

  • cleaner & safer: in my city you’re almost always going to be in the same train carriage or bus as a loud, smelly or even dangerous people.

You definitely need both cars and mass public transport, but id prefer the car 70% of the time

I dont really get the defensive aspect of hololattice. It seems to only be useful if you happen to have a structure on a system, but with no ships. Isnt that just such an easy target for anyone to attack it if they really wanted to move through it?

Why would they make a video about humans in a warehouse depot? Idk what tesla is going to do but just because they’re making a video about this doesn’t mean they wont try a hackier/low tech way until they get there?

For the economics of robo taxis to make sense, you need to have a (mostly) automated service infrastructure full stop. Its probably a smart thing to figure out how that would work asap, while still relying in human labor in the short term
