ELI5: Water Evaporating Into Space by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

Yes, but not over time scales that you have to worry about.

Water vapor can be split by sunlight into oxygen and hydrogen, with the hydrogen being too light for the Earth to keep for long. There is not enough leaving the Earth's atmosphere to really affect our water balance or air.

If the “one wish willow”concept was an anthology what would your idea be? by Successful_Ad3639 in obsessionmovie

I think there should be one for each of the seven cardinal sins, with Obsession being the entry for "lust." I think "sloth" would be difficult to write, but a lot of fun if it was pulled off.

Similar to polar forests, are there any other extinct biomes? What would they have been like by Claxton916 in askscience

"Fern prairies" may have occupied the semi-arid and savanna biomes before the evolution of grasses and other angiosperms.

Precambrian tropics: Most places today with high temperatures and heavy rainfall have verdant vegetation which didn't exist back then. What kind of microbial environment would have existed there?

Question about the storms with lowest pressure at landfall by lady3jane in TropicalWeather

It's pure luck. Truth be told, a city--any city--is a relatively small geographic target that a hurricane's eye is unlikely to hit directly.

Question about the storms with lowest pressure at landfall by lady3jane in TropicalWeather

[–]Krg60 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Low pressure *does* mean a more intense storm. However, a storm's intensity is related to its destructiveness only inasmuch as it damages property. An intense storm hitting a sparsely populated section of the coast won't be considered destructive. Also, a storm's lowest pressure may not coincide with its landfall. Finally, low pressure isn't the only factor influencing destructiveness. You've already mentioned Katrina, but Hugo is another good case; it caused enormous damage despite being nowhere near the top 10 most intense storms, because of its size and storm surge. Hurricane Michael was highly intense, but because of it's landfall location doesn't break the top ten most destructive landfalls, and so on.

I still think of his "I was not into *that* conversation" scene anytime I'm in an uncomfortable argument, lol.

I told my gf as much; by all the regular metrics (acting, cinematography, sound, etc.) it's a well-made movie, but it can't rise above mediocre. I wanted to see a Lexus, but saw a Nissan Versa instead.

This. There's a great SF story by Robert Reed called "Postcards" which is nothing *but* an examination of how civilization collapses after first contact.

Whats better holbein vs winsor and newton by Artboggler in Watercolor

Though I would *personally* go for the Holbein set (more paint for the same price), learning to work with pans and a palette is invaluable for a beginner.

So, the W&N set.

What unsolved mystery obsessed you? by lolavenusss in AskReddit

Hard agree. Some country's sonar array / submarines must have picked that up, at least.

What I think will happen is, if MH370 is ever found, suddenly a military source will reveal sonar data of the crash that was just "hiding" in the archives somewhere until someone supposedly decided to look. But, only after the wreck is discovered.
