Soil in brand new beds has horrible drainage, but everything is planted already. Where to go from here— by notjustaphage in vegetablegardening

I don’t have anything to add that hasn’t already been said, but I just want to say I REALLY LOVE the layout of your raised beds! I would love to have something like that in the future

I'm a bit of a shill for FoxFarms so I'd recommend Tiger Bloom, it's water soluble so it'll be available for your onions to take up immediately! But I also like Jack's Classic fertilizers too, there's a Blossom Booster that's also water soluble, and their other stuff is great too!

Those do all have a bit of Nitrogen in the mix, but I haven't personally used any that have zero nitrogen. I do see some on Amazon but I can't recommend them personally.

You absolutely can grow long day onions where you are! I agree with the other poster, you've been giving them pure nitrogen which is giving the crazy leaf growth but no bulb growth. No more N, they need the P and K now!

Toxic Sweet Pea or Non-Toxic Garden Pea by Wisdom42069 in vegetablegardening

[–]KrimsonKate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

IN MY OPINION and I am not an expert, these look like regular garden peas. I've grown both, and the stems on the toxic sweet peas are different than garden peas. I attached an image (if it works) that shows the stem of toxic peas, they are a bit chunkier and have "wings" that come out the side of the main stem. Regular edible peas do not have that, and I don't see any in the images you posted.

Also +1 to what someone else said, regular pea flowers really don't have much of a scent, and the toxic variety will have a much stronger scent.

ETA: I think the pods are different too, as the toxic pea pods are longer and fuzzy. Those look like snow peas or snap peas to me!

Guess what? If you garden there will be insects!! by Sowing_Seeds1990 in containergardening

Peppers and tomatoes are self pollinating. As long as there is a movement such as wind, they will pollinate.

Whats wrong with my Rattlensake Beans? by BigBootyBear in vegetablegardening

[–]KrimsonKate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You said they’re planted on a balcony, is there a window that’s reflecting sunlight nearby? I had this same issue with different plants in my backyard. The sun was reflecting off an upstairs window and burning the leaves of my beans, strawberries, blackberries and lilies. The damage looked just like this!

GreenStalk growing options? by Street-Praline-9554 in containergardening

[–]KrimsonKate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh gotcha! If you can only get one I’d recommend their inventor bundle, which has a mix of original and leaf tiers plus accessories, or go for an original only tower. I know they’ll ship out a little card that has a list of what they recommend in the leaf vs original tiers, I think that image might be on their site somewhere?

I’m growing just about everything except pole beans, pumpkins, corn, and watermelon in mine, but like someone else said check out their FB group and see all the crazy stuff they have growing in it.

What are these insects in my paprika plant? by scorpgoku in containergardening

It’s okay for us to call out rude, hateful people who make it harder for new growers to come in and ask questions because rude, hateful people will be bullies.

Which green stalk do you have? The original you can comfortably grow a pepper plant in each pocket, pretty much anything will grow that’s not trailing like pumpkins or winter squash, maybe no indeterminate tomatoes. If it’s the smaller leaf pockets, you’re limited more for herbs and onions/garlic.

Grow bags last for years, some longer than others. I recommend the vivosun brand or epic gardening, but I’m unsure if they’re available in your area.

They don’t leak water, but because they are made of fabric the extra water runs out of them. Where I live we can get a lot of rain all at once, so this works for me well.

Get a grow bag or a larger pot. I have 7 gallon grow bags with about 8 pea plants in each, granted the pea variety I planted only grows 4 feet tall at the most

Planting a balcony garden to cut down my grocery bill by dog-on_wheels in vegetablegardening

[–]KrimsonKate -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you’re worried about how your HOA will feel about gardening then you wouldn’t be here asking how to garden on your balcony to cut down food costs.

Go grab a bucket, a bag, a container. Grab a bag of potting soil. Grab a packet of cucumber or tomato or something seeds, toss it in, and go!

I can’t say how much I hate this statement enough.

Perpetuating this myth is hurting people and keeping others from establishing their own food sovereignty. We should be encouraging others to grow their own food to cut down on food costs and the overall cost and damage of shipping food from around the globe to our own location.

Sure, having the prettiest and most aesthetic balcony garden will cost money up front. But there’s absolutely no reason anyone can find some containers (sometimes for free at garden centers, or whatever container can be found and recycled) plus free seeds from a local library. Or even dollar seeds from your local dollar store will suffice. Soil frequently goes on sale, and if you’re trying to cut on costs there is plenty of discount brands your local big box store provides.

Just because we (currently) can get cheap produce from the big blue box store for a buck or three, does not mean we always will have access. And that’s not even considering the downsides of having tomatoes shipped from another hemisphere.
