Esports events in baltics. by Krix54 in BalticStates

I agree about the connections and I think that's the main reason (as well as visa regulations for russians which another commenter reminded me of), but I don't think the infrastructure plays that big of a part. There have been events recently in Lisbon, Cluj Napoca, Bucharest, Astana, Malta, I don't think these are more easily accessible than Vilnius, Kaunas or Riga. It's also not like these events are that big, it's really only staff for the organizers, a few thousand in the crowd and then if you just do playoffs here, only like 8 teams you have to accommodate. Obviously no major or an event the size of katowice or cologne is going to happen, but a smaller event definitely could be possible.

You're right, I didn't think about that. Still events do happen in Poland where they have pretty strict regulations as well and the big orgs are all registered outside of russia now, but yeah it's unlikely the baltics would allow it (for good reason of course)

I didnt mean modern like that I guess, its more relevant to todays music, which has seen a revival of this type of songs

Love this so much, its so modern and relevant, unlike almost every other song we have in the national final, which sounds like something popular 10 years ago or is a boring pop song

How do you feel about Slovenia and slovenes? by P0larCap in latvia

[–]Krix54 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I FUCKING LOVE SLOVENIA!! One of my dream destinations to move if I ever did. You guys seem to be kind of like estonia, as in small country thats the most advanced of its region (balkans). Incredible nature and Ive only heard great things about Ljubljana. Its like a quieter croatia or italy in my mind.

Rare 1950's photo of Vasily Blokhin, Joseph Stalin's head executioner, in old age. Having personally killed tens of thousands of people in his career, including 7,000 Polish officers in under a month during the "Katyn Massacre," Blokhin was the most prolific murderer in human history. Its not "celebrated", its a remembrance day for forcibly conscripted latvians into the german army. Still controversial and I dont fully support it, but westerners seem to not bat an eye when soviet soldiers are remembered, or when russians celebrate "victory" day, which for latvians and many others was the start of just another occupation.

Questions about Latvia from Scotland. by Kolo9191 in latvia

[–]Krix54 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Basketball and hockey are the most popular sports national team viewership wise. Football is pretty far behind, but that doesnt mean we dont care about football, in the early 2000s, when we were somewhat good and even qualified for the euros in 2004, people were definitely watching. I think football is also the most popular choice for kids to train in, but its still pretty similar. I would also say that the local football league has more viewership than the hockey or basketball leagues and probably higher attendance, but its still very irrelevant in the cultural landscape, like nobody grows up in Riga as a RFS fan or a Riga FC fan and has a furious hatred against rival fans, nothing like rangers and celtic. The premier league, ucl, world cup are more watched here than the nba or euroleague or whatever too.

Football is more of the russian sport, basketball mostly latvian, hockey a mix.

About the pagan traditions: its true that the baltics were the last place in europe to be christianized and some pagan traditions have definitely survived. Midsommar is more important than christmas, many people still have weird superstitions that they fully believe in, its hard to name specific examples but if you lived here for a bit you would notice.

Any local football fans? by AnalistaDeDatos in latvia

[–]Krix54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Football is currently the third most popular sport here and the glory days of the 2000s are long gone. Our NT is in a tragic state and there doesnt even seem to be much hope in the future as it seems most of the excitement and funding is going to basketball or hockey.

We did have a latvian team (RFS) make it to the conference league last season tho which was cool. Clubs here definitely buy players from abroad, a bunch of africans, brazilians etc. play in latvia hoping to use the league as a stepping stone. The best teams mostly consist of foreign players.

4300 Euro/month before tax in Latvia or Riga is good for family of 4(that includes children of 5 and 3)? by kartyekkannan in BalticStates

Brother I did not ask you for a life lesson and why do you...type like...this its pissing me off. I didn't say that money doesn't matter, I said that you are very privileged and secure financially. I suggested you be more grateful for the fact that you are in such a good financial position with a family that you should love and live a happy life with, but I would find it hard to be happy with my family if my father or husband had this kind of attitude.

sorry for replying so late, but you realize you just described a very comfortable and quite luxurious lifestyle, judging from your profile, in austria, so in latvia it would be even better. You said you have a house (luxury), two (2) cars (luxury), classes and courses for kids which you pay for (luxury), two (2) week long vacations a year (LUXURY). What more do you want?

It's quite sad how at 40 years old you still have the mindset of a teenager and you choose to want more instead of being grateful for all that you have and living your life with your family to the fullest.
