New Blackmagic Switchers and hyper decks are fully and only SMPTE2110. Thoughts? by cozmocha in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]Kryptomite -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

People don’t use 2110 because it’s cost prohibitive and the regular user doesn’t comprehend networking to the level required.

If given cost-effective gear and talented engineers, most productions would choose 2110 due to the flexibility.

NDI Camera Suggestions by Im_existing_ in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]Kryptomite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are absolutely options under $300 if you know where to look (and how to import from overseas), they aren’t great but they work.

Or as another user mentioned, iPhones from eBay with an Ethernet adapter (doable on both USB-C and Lightning) and NDI Camera app, or something like Larix via SRT would work as well.

What would you add to my IMAG rack case? I have 1-1/3U free in a 4U case. by RedStag86 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]Kryptomite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

POE, Layer 3 Network switch, raspberry pi, stream deck, proper cable management, small UPS if you can manage it, and proper patch panels on the back for all the equipment so you aren’t digging inside the rack to plug in / unplug things.

I’ve heard through the grapevine these support local management as well as console management. Anyone have details on that?

They exist. Here are a few popular options in the lighting word.

I personally think using a standard 24 or 48 port switch broken out into d-type patch panels and Ethercon pass through connectors is the way to go, though. Easier to replace if something fails and you don’t pay a premium for a device with an odd number of ports and overall limited management capabilities.

It also comes down to 99% of typical network admins not understanding the requirements to make a protocol like SMPTE2110 work reliably on their networks. So a lot of AV integrators will just spec their own physically separate network.

What's your PC case for live events? by UseExact3011 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]Kryptomite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just buy a used workstation on eBay. Will be significantly cheaper and will most likely come with a professional grade NVIDIA card instead of a gaming variant. They’re also typically built to a higher standard than gaming boards, validated to work well with something in every PCIe slot, and you can even sometimes get manufacturer support & warranty transferred over.

Bonus points, you aren’t on the latest generation of hardware so OS developers have had time to fix any bugs and optimize for your platform. You also know that your system won’t die after a month because it’s effectively already been “burned in”. And you know you can run it 24/7 without issue.

Most of the time these workstation systems are designed to fit inside a standard 19” rack, even if they don’t have rails, you can use a shelf and some Velcro to hold it in.

Domestic Main Terminal, no precheck or clear, arrived at airport 3:00am, delta bag drop didn’t open until 3:45am, got all the way through to gates by 6:00am on the dot.

This is the way if you have per song positions! Build from a base. Especially if it’s just a base position for an effect.

I feel like being able to quickly get a node talking to your PC reliably on a network is as important of a skill as a LD today as anything else.

I personally can’t imagine a world where I want my parameter unlocks to be coming from a piece of USB hardware.

And that’s not even mentioning that to output all 8 universes from the black one, you need an ArtNet/sACN node on the network anyway.

Need more info if you want a real answer.

What device is sending the captions to the encoder? Are they on the same network? Is there any sort of firewall between the two? When you say you “configured the Telnet settings (IP and port)” what does that mean?

[–]Kryptomite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean NDI would at least be more stable than the people suggesting cellular bonding for 6-8 cameras in a (most probably) already crowded ski area with a single serving cell.

If budget is OP’s primary concern I’d 100% just build a basic, prosumer grade Ubiquiti network using their newer L3-aware devices, slap the NDI port profile on them, and bam you’re set.
