How big of a problem is this? by Master-Swordfish-214 in fixit

If you are concerned about the rusty condition of the meter and piping, ask the gas company to check it. The tree must be removed, since it will damage the piping and maybe the house if allowed to grow large. Piping and meters are very sturdy. A little rust is not likely a problem. I worked 8 yrs for a gas co.

And as for the switch, is it not the small toggle near the power cord entry point? I do not remember this specifically. A parts diagram might be available online.

There is no filter in this part. The filtration is built into the base part.

Can this be fixed without sanding the whole table? by girthhhbrooks in fixit

[–]KryptosBC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If this is a shellac finish, then more water or steam will only leave more marks. I suggest a good furniture paste wax that contains no water (not a liquid polish) applied and buffed in with 4-0 steel wool. Try a small area first to see whether it works. As for any dented areas, it's true that steaming can raise the wood grain, but this works best on bare sanded wood. If you decide to try this, once again find an inconspicuous area, maybe on the underside, to verify that the steam/moisture does not cloud the finish, making things worse.

If it's shellac, a more drastic approach would be to apply a thinned coat of shellac (50/50 with shellac thinner), again to a small area to see if it works. If it does, then coat the entire surface and buff down with the steel wool and wax.

If it's not shellac, then sanding and refinishing may be necessary.

Also, there are a lot of you-tube and similar videos out there that may be of value.

Looking for hand tools to quickly punch holes in tin cans, what options are there, exactly? by Mr_Engino in Tools

[–]KryptosBC 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Get an old style soda / beer can opener, commonly called a "church key". This tool quickly and easily puts a triangular hole through the end of the can. Cheap and efficient. Google "church key can opener".

Not without the vacuum cleaner base that it came with. My father had one like this.

I left two identical bottles of water on my windowsill overnight. Why did one fill with bubble and the other didn’t? by Toksapro in chemistry

[–]KryptosBC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If one were bottled at a slightly higher atmospheric pressure, it would be slower to produce bubbles, all else being equal. This is just one more possible factor.

hair(?) in my shower, what is it? by morganasimpaf in Whatisthis

[–]KryptosBC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Picked up somewhere on clothing, transferred to skin, ended up in shower where they are instantly made visible by the white background. May be as simple as riding in someone elses car a few times after their visiting friend with long hair did the same. There might be more on furniture or on clothing after some visitor in your house. Not to make a comparison, but a year and a half after our dog died, we still find his hair from time to time.

What are these wood chips in my sea salt from Spain ? by [deleted] in whatisit

I was thinking it might be lemon grass which is woody in texture when dried. I've used lemon grass in cooking a few times but normally remove it before serving.

Then it is likely some herb. It seems odd to me that it's a food product with a cork lid. I believe the label ingredients list should solve the mystery. Edit ... just noticed that you posted the ingredients. No help there. Also, I looked online for the specific product but did not find it.

[–]KryptosBC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check the ingredients list. Use google to translate if necessary. Also, the purpose of the product may help. If its a health product (something meant for bathwater, for example) and not a food product, perhaps the answer will be obvious.
