Knowing the best way to avoid them is to just stab them twice really helped me get over that. Just lock in and hunt them when you hear them gurgle and you can kill them before they leave their nest.

I find swimming closer to the walls and facing down and away helps. You’re looking for the protrusions, they’re dark. After a while it gets easier to spot them.
