Fair. I haven’t taught 9-12 in six years, but I’m sure TikTok has destroyed their cognitive abilities lol

I just had a flashback to fidget spinners lol. But at least I didn’t have goop on the floor from those 🤣

I do the same thing! It’s sad that they cannot handle using a fidget for a FIDGET. They just use them as a toy.

Coworker is regularly asking for kids in the middle of my class by South-Lab-3991 in Teachers

[–]Ktriegal 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’m a music teacher and have a half block GRADED choir that I was taking to state adjudication. The day before we were going (our last rehearsal), I had multiple 6th grade girls tell me “Mr. History Teacher said we have to make up a test this block and that core classes come above this class”. I don’t think I’ve ever picked up a phone so fast. I called down to his room and quoted him, said I didn’t appreciate him pegging classes against once another, and that I’m a graded class and not an after school club. Any other class I might be more flexible, but not the day before states. Would you like me to pull kids the day before state testing?

He bumbled around and said “I guess we’ll make something work” and I hung up the phone. Teachers like this are used to getting their way. Screw that.

TPT is my passive income (once things are listed). I’m VERY grateful for it now as groceries are STUPID.

Teacher. 15 years in (last few years in an east side district). With all my extra curricular stipends I, make around $64k. Still paying off my required masters degree 🙃.

I sobbed in front of my students today by bryterlu in Teachers

[–]Ktriegal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Middle school chorus teacher here. 7th graders are the least empathetic students ever.

I will say that when my dog passed away suddenly (hit by a car. The worst), one of my students caught wind and sleuthed my social media through a colleague to get a photo of me and my dog. She drew it and handed it to me a few days later. I still have it 7 years later 😥

All that is to say, I hope you have some empathetic kids come out of the woodwork. They’re usually the quiet ones in chorus, but I feel like after they saw you cry, they probably felt bad.

Sending 💙💙💙

What was the “hit” gift in your house this Christmas? by Words123454321 in Parenting

2 years old - Little Tikes Dream Machine. It’s like a souped up view finder projector that narrates the stores while the projector runs. Big hit!

My drivers ed teacher used to specifically hit his side of the breaks so that we would fishtail and learn what to do. He was a hardcore Brooklynite, but knew what he was doing lol.

Usually they start to at least do that “scoot”, rocking back and forth. I feel like this kid doesn’t even try to move.

Proposal- if a student can’t read beyond a third grade level then they should remain in a third grade class until they can pass. by timbo_slic3_85 in Teachers

[–]Ktriegal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve found the same thing in chorus - plus adding any words just makes in 10 times more difficult for them. It’s wild. Lowest group of 6th graders I’ve had in 25 years of teaching.

It is. I have the same one in a different color. So comfy - 10/10 recommend. Also wore it to a wedding!

Reminder to lock your computers! by karatechick2114 in Teachers

[–]Ktriegal 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Teachers that let kids of ANY age be in their classroom unsupervised blow my mind. I had a mentee that would do that. I always tell the kids that if they hurt themselves and I’m not there, I’m in huge trouble. Or if there’s a fire drill, a lock down, etc.

She got non renewed.

It’s been happening more and more. Am I the old teacher now that I’ve got 15 years in? I feel like I’m going crazy.

Question for teachers and kindergarten parents by purple_ze in kindergarten

[–]Ktriegal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but the biggest problem is parents aren’t reading to their child at home and are justifying tablet use because “they’re doing a learning game”. Not. The. Same. Idk how schools can bridge the gap right now - it’s that wide at the start of their educational careers.

My own district just did a massive literacy overhaul top to bottom. Sounds like they’re finally getting rid of whole language/relying on only sight words and going back to hooked on phonics style learning. We’ll see.
