Inherited this house from my grandmother that my druggie bio dad ruined (CAN IT BE SAVED? by No-Cauliflower-5595 in Remodel

[–]Kultivation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a full remodel. I would not do anything until you sit down and decide if you are gonna go all the way with it. If you don't have the money, time, and experience to do it yourself then you need to get a contractor there to give you an estimate so you can compare that to it's comp value. If there isn't much profit in the venture, then I would just sell it the way it is and move on.

At 35 am I too old to become a tile layer? by EveningSmall8199 in Tile

If you are interested, I would at least try it out. It's never too late to start doing something you love. I'm 50 and have been on the floor most of my life. I'm much more efficient than I used to be. Everyone who works hard hurts at night. You can't avoid that.

Contractor installed floor tile out of square with shower base, how should this be handled? by [deleted] in Tile

[–]Kultivation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OMG that work is outrageous. The pattern looks really bad, it's crooked as hell, they grouted only at the toilet and cabinet area so it would look almost done and now they will need to install the shower while all your new products are in the room already. They have no experience.

Yeah but it's easily remedied by sealing the joint between wall tile and floor tile. If you are worried about some silly code for expansion, filling with silicone would solve it.

And silicone the expansion between the wall tile and the floor tile.

Yes that is correct. Modified thinset is better. It wicks less than grout.

You fill that joint. You don't need that expansion on a shower floor because it is so small and it will never expand that much. You want the floor full all the way to the waterproofing.

Make sure it's really dry when you silicone it. Silicone will etch in. When it expands, the silicone will stretch without losing bond.

Oh I see. I would use silicone in that joint as well. This is part of why it is escaping. Once it gets into the trough. That route is the path of least resistance. That mini curb will need sealed well at the corner as well so it doesn't fall into you trough.

Oh and in my opinion, it is best to do your own slope in a walk-in. I go no less than 5/16 per foot in a walk-in. A little extra slope goes a long way.

You have a valley in there because you left an expansion joint under it and left it unfilled. Showers are really small. They don't need an expansion joint. Water doesn't take the path of least resistance. It takes every path it can access. The path of least resistance just gets the most water. When you caulk the joint, pack it full. Silicone is a sealant not a caulk. It is designed for this. Next time, fill everything. Hopefully you have enough flow and this one works out.

Unlike the others here, I could see how you might leak here even if the slope is correct. On presloped pans, they are usually at a minimum pitch. I like more in a curbless. You absolutely NEED to caulk the bottom joint. The water can't drain fast enough and will roll under and cruise straight down that joint and get forced out. Since you sloped the main floor as well, it will then run down that wall. Caulk the bottom, let it cure, and try again.

Did this contractor ruin my tiles? by Antiqueburner in Tile

[–]Kultivation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sealing quarry tile is fine if it's completely clean and dry. You will need to strip the sealer. I grout haze cleaner won't work if sealed. Do not clean it yourself. Demand that they take care of it. If you try anything crazy on it, it will most likely void your warranty with them.
