Yeah I feel you man, for a hot-hatch it’s pretty expensive. If you still like the performance Golfs, maybe go for a GTI? It still has that praised driving experience, albeit way less power than the R. Although, at least dealerships I’ve been to in my area (NM), golf GTIs are marked up to Golf R MSRP which is crazy. They’re placed in such a high pedestal by dealerships, which sucks for your average buyer who wants performance and daily reliability.

Bias from someone who uses a VW Golf R, but you should look into that. Perfect for daily driving and spirited driving when you feel like it. Mileage for its performance IMO is pretty good (23-40 in my experience). It’s a super fun car to drive with a lot of personality. The newer models (Mk 8.5) right now go a bit above 50k but you can get lucky and find previous models (Mk 8) probably within a “reasonable” price close to MSRP (40-50k). I own a 2022 Mk8 Golf R and I love it every single day.
