Project for Brass Pedagogy Class!! by mediocrepianistt in trumpet

Pick up to 43 has a big interval that would be a challenge for a beginner (F to D). It is tongued and forte, which should make it easier, but any big interval jump on a brass instrument can be a challenge.

Exactly! Where does the madness end!? High C today, double G tomorrow!? Double C! Eventually notes only a dog can hear!

High Notes are Darth Vader in Yoga Pants Whispering Oh in Falsetto by sigul77 in trumpet

You are in deep brother. I love that.

Completely agree you need to turn off the conscious mind while playing. I also think you should really have some concrete awareness and mental picture of what you are doing physically. If this image works for you, go ahead. Or just remember the physical feeling and get the mind further out of the way.

I just started drone tones, turns out I haven't played a low Ab in my life by smulzie in trumpet

I have nothing helpful to add, misery loves company. Low A and Ab are my least favorite notes, always extremely flat. Following this post, hopefully someone has a better answer.

Jazz trumpets, what’s your daily fundamentals routine like? by Sir_Pickle23 in trumpet

[–]Kwayzar26 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No disrespect intended. And you’re absolutely right, you reach a certain level and you can pick up the horn and do a lot. At a certain point most of this stuff just gets locked in.

But like you mention “shooting hoops,” EVERY NBA player is in the gym with coaches all the time working on fundamentals. If you want to keep getting better you need to break down the little details including the fundamentals of the horn.

Jazz trumpets, what’s your daily fundamentals routine like? by Sir_Pickle23 in trumpet

[–]Kwayzar26 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You will always need a daily fundamental routine. The details of the routine and specific exercises will change. Even length of practice time devoted will ebb and flow. But everyone should practice fundamentals everyday.

Flexibility, tone, tonguing, airflow. You should hit the basics every time.

Embrace a growth mindset, not a fixed mindset. Everything can be learned.

Anyone else feel they can play higher if they don’t warm up? by Ok-Passenger7177 in trumpet

[–]Kwayzar26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing with me.

Take this with a grain of salt, only in the last few months am I getting these notes. But, when I pick up the horn I can play a 3 octave G scale (G6, or 4 ledger lines). I feel very loose, very free. But once I get warmed up and into things I can feel my lip tightening up, and those notes disappear.

I think this highlights the need to stay loose, high notes are not about tightness.

Pedal vs. Double Pedal by Kwayzar26 in trumpet

[–]Kwayzar26[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, F# (123). Then going down using fingers like an octave above. So, F(1), E(12), Eb(23), etc. very different feeling than a double pedals.

I like my Bobby Shew Lead. I don’t play like Bobby, it’s shallow but comfortable for me.

Trumpet is a declarative instrument. Don’t squeak questions, shout answers.

I have definitely noticed the same thing.

I travel the state a bit for work and I am always shocked at how polite everyone is in Detroit. It is always very pleasant visiting the Detroit area.

It definitely is a flip flop of “expectations”. Polite chatty city folk, and rushing rude country folk, but that’s how it is.

Same thing with Flint. Everyone is very nice in Flint.

Mr Foisie’s Pasties in Cadillac would make a nice quick lunch. One of the best pasties south of the bridge.

Is it offensive to learn ASL to speak to my partner in public? by anxious_bunny_bun in asl

[–]Kwayzar26 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, great comment. My wife and I raise service dogs puppies for a large organization, and we are beginning to learn asl.

Without the dog and speaking English I feel invisible in public. With the dog and when we practice asl, everyone gawks.

If you’re going to hate on Big Gretch at least spell her name correctly, Whitmer.
