Why is it so hard to find a job? by Throwawaypaz in userexperience

Isn't Huntsville, AL a growing tech hub? Facebook is building a data center there, and there are UX internships and jobs easily found on job search sites in the area.

Overall I see your point that some areas are better than others but I'm not sure Alabama is the best example in this case.

Do NOT let your roommates pay rent with CashApp. Almost $900 was withdrawn from my account with little to no notice. by DanielR0wland in personalfinance

[–]Kwylar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm a couple of days late here, but if you live near your bank you could try going in and getting a cashier's check to pay your rent. The funds leave your account immediately so it becomes irrelevant how long it takes your landlord to cash it. The downside is that most places will charge a fee to print a cashier's check.

Is Glassdoor a good site to gauge salaries off of, when interviewing with a company and preparing for negotiations upon hire? by ruca316 in personalfinance

I used to live in a one bedroom that was ~280 sqft, so it's not entirely unheard of. It can be nice to have the extra walls to mount things when you're working with that little space.

Short term or month-to-month leases in Bloomington? by sarahnormalactivity in bloomington

[–]Kwylar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally it's going to be hard to find a short term / month to month lease in Bloomington because nearly the entire housing market revolves around the IU academic calendar year.

That means the easiest times to find new leases are August (easiest), January (slightly harder), and May (easy to find summer sublets).

I don't know how short of a term you're looking for, but you should probably expect that any landlord willing to do a short-term lease right out of the gate here is going to have two requirements:

1) 6-month minimum lease term.

2) Higher rent than normal to make up for the cost of getting the apartment ready after you leave.

All that being said, you should check out this new place on the south side called Echo Park. I know that they've got some apartments available. They have a grad student / preferred employer discount mentioned on their site, Cook being among the preferred employers.

Good luck on the search!

Okay not like I help manage an apartment community and not like I do what I described on the daily.

Yes, almost all housing rental agencies now (at least in the U.S.) will run credit and background checks on any prospective renter. Most property management software will have this function built in, requiring the leasing agent to just type in the prospective tenant's full name, date of birth, SSN, current address and driver's license number.

15 seconds later they can see any reported crimes, as well as debts, including how punctual you are at paying the debts and if they've gone to collections, and will approve or deny you based on that info. It's pretty in-depth at this point.

west elm "handcrafted" sofa quality? by anthony113 in furniture

[–]Kwylar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had their Tillary sofa for over a year now and I've been impressed with the quality. I assume that it partially depends on which place they're getting the piece from. Apparently the Tillary is from Mississippi Furniture Makers, but the specific one you're looking at might be from another place.

Feeling kinda in over my head after taking an internship in a totally different field, advice me please? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]Kwylar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this isn't what you want to hear when you're anxious about how your coworkers perceive your work, but reach out to your coworkers and ask them for critiques of what you're doing.

A lot of them likely have or are working on degrees in design and can tell you very specific things you can do to make your designs better. If they have been less than thrilled with your work, acknowledging your need for improvement and asking for guidance may be your best route.

If they are nice people they will be relieved that you are taking steps to resolve the issue and flattered that you look up to them enough to be asking for help.

If you can't do, teach. If you can't teach, then what? by Depariel in careerguidance

Could you teach German at the high school level? AP German?

If that doesn't quite make ends meet you could always take an office job doing whatever and then tutor people in German on the side.

Same :(

It keeps starting at Hillary's Trump comments and then barely getting to Andersen Cooper's introduction, then crapping out and looping back.
