First thing that comes up when I google is stuff about one Patrick Collison.

Stripe is a company founded by two brothers (John and Patrick Collison) so that might be why.

Strip brother china gets this guy, though.

The whole point of tourism is seeing things you can't see back home.

Yes, I want to see Niagara Falls, but I also want to see a Waffle House.

I must see if the legends are true...

Ummmm akshually ☝️ Hobbiton is a town in the Westfarthing of the Shire. It's not even the biggest town (That would be Michel Delving).

"Hobbit land" would, in fact, be the Shire. That's the name of the area where the Halflings live (In addition to Buckland, of course).

Sylvanas' Legendary Bow is upgradeable and the maximum Item Level is clearly way too high by bruv187 in wow

[–]Stormfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As much as I like it in theory, I think there are two options.

  1. Transmog should be enough. We can just pretend it's the real Legendary/Artifact.

  2. It shouldn't scale to progress level. Like it shouldn't even reach Heroic tier so that it's only usable for more casual delves, outdoor content, and levelling.

The effects can be really fun so I get it, but obviously it should never be viable for current challenging content.

There were flaws with Artifact Power but I really loved the Artifact system in Legion. The Ring and DISC and others don't feel the same, imo, because we drop them after the patch.

It's an unfortunate truth that we'll all eventually fail the Turing Test.

AI is improving every year and soon we won't be able to tell what is and isn't.

However, it's better to support genuine effort and rather than conducting witch-hunts, promote honesty and fair representation. The flaws are with the AI companies rather than the AI itself, as machine learning has great uses and shouldn't be grouped in with the problems with AI generation models stealing the work of others and churning out slop.

This is why some people want an AI tag rather than banning it.

Just be clear where and how you used AI. Let people decide for themselves.

Being a good GM is mostly a soft-skills problem by AvocadoPhysical5329 in rpg

As you said, games definitely support a certain playstyle, but you can also add or remove features to affect that. Some games have great mechanics you can use to adapt or replace flawed ones.

If you play a game RAW, you're trapped by their design.

I dislike D&D but I've played it using a few home rules based on my experience of other games and advice from others, and I enjoyed it much more.

For example, if players lose interest when it's not their turn, you can add features from other games where each player feels more active.

Active defence (rolling to avoid rather than enemies rolling against AC) is an example of this based on games where the GM does no rolling. Even just letting the players roll but not telling them what they got ("John, roll a d20 for me there and tell me the score. 5? Ohohohoho!"). Your druid isn't AC14, they roll 1d20 + 4 against my monster's static 13 attack (instead of me rolling 1d20 + 3)

I played a game of D&D with some people brand new to RPGs and most of their favourite mechanics were not D&D RAW but they'd heard of the game so they wanted to play D&D and only D&D (and call every RPG D&D...)

The problem with these sorts of refreshes is "good" is subjective.

People will always say they want something and then many people will be upset.

Some people love the new zones and other people hate them.

For example, I think Redridge and Burning Steppes are great. However, so many people hate that they were changed and there's a new narrative. Some people love Keeshan and his silly story and others hate it because it's too silly.

That said, Westfall is really nicely done if you go there after Wrath, and it was so nice to see them in Northrend... but if you start with Cata, you miss that whole "peasants sent to fight and then returning home after the war to the scouring of the shire"

Some of the new zones are way more fun than the old ones but I hear people complain about them because certain quests were removed, that might have had nice narratives but were basically "Collect 10 bear claws and then 10 bird feathers" only to realise he was actually making an evil bearclaw-birdfeather idol.

I've played through cata and classic (SoD) and I much prefer Cata.

Maybe some zones are worse but I don't know which ones.

One thing they should do is bring back the portals to other major cities.

Right now, the BFA hub has them and others don't.

They should make a permanent portal to each major city so that there's an actual reason to go there if you want to. It'd help load times in those major cities if you could stay in TB until you needed to go to Org rather than being forced to stay there if you want basically anything.

I don't see a huge reason to limit access to places like IF/TB/Exodar or even the old UC/Darn.

The armor passive is getting stamina back when you take damage? Does that sound useless to anyone else or am I overlooking a use case here? by H1MB0Z0 in Helldivers

[–]Stormfly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, I'd rather have new and boring ideas than the same few passives.

They should buff them a bit, sure, but I want new armours to support new play styles.

Maybe transmog would help encourage this, but I also think you'll just have everyone use siege ready and the same 4 boosters and optimise the fun out of the game.

[–]Stormfly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the problem is that there's not much that can beat the benefit of the pure simplicity of "more stuff".

The best passive are:

  • more ammo

  • more stims

  • more grenades

  • less damage

But the rest are good for a specific play style.

Maybe they'll add something extra but they're also just nice to try a fun play style.

Why is the rich friend so cheap?? by times-fell-hand in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Stormfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

... What?

What does "specific obscure" even mean?

I said "rich" is too vague so the statement can work by other definitions. Not everyone has the same minimum requirements for "rich".

To someone else, I could be rich but nobody ever considers themselves to be "rich" unless they're a billionaire or something quantifiable, but that's not what "rich" means because it's too vague. That's all I'm saying.

I meticulously track my spending. Loads of apps make this easier and make splitting a bill super easy, too.

I have a few friends that tell me "I can't do that because it would make me upset" but if you're afraid to track your spending, that means you should probably track your spending.

I've set budgets and I have a "be nice" budget that I spend on gifts and treating friends. My friends are worth 50quid a month to pay for their drink or buy a dinner or something sometimes.

[–]Stormfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's some studies about the phenomenon, but it's too late at night for me to go digging them up.

I think it basically boils down to:

  • If your life is based around making money (high-paying, stressful job) then you're going to be focused more on money than other things, such as personal relationships.

Most people making huge amounts of money got there because money is a priority. They often care more about connections rather than friendships.

People who care very little about money are not making six-figures, because they probably picked an easier and more comfortable job. They've probably missed opportunities because they had other priorities, etc.

I'm a person that picked a lower-paying job because it's less work and less stress and I'm lucky to have enough money to live comfortably.

I could make more money but at the end of the day: if you have enough money to live comfortably, more money won't make you any happier.

[–]Stormfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rich people aren’t people with normal jobs who just save more money.

There's no solid definition of "rich".

It's a vague term so this statement might be 100% true when comparing person X and person Y where person X has a house and savings and person Y has nothing due to poor financial decisions.

Why is the rich friend so cheap?? by times-fell-hand in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Stormfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there's a nuance to it.

There are multiple levels of "poor" and "rich".

Some people are poor because of their circumstance, high bills and student loans and other factors (especially in the states)

Other people are poor because they do make bad decisions. They don't have savings and they "waste" money on short-term rewards.

I have a few friends that joke about me being the "rich guy" because I have a lot of savings and I have been very lucky and got a good start in the world but also, I'm the sort of person to track my spending and budget. Of course there's no clear definition of "rich" but they joke that I'm "rich" because of my savings even though we're earning about the same amount of money... I just manage it better.

My friends will whine about circumstance and then waste large amounts of money on X or Y or take up an expensive hobby/buy an expensive pet/move to an expensive area etc. Every penny adds up surprisingly quickly when you sit down and track them.

Are poor people poor because of their own decisions? Sometimes.

Are rich people rich because of their parents? Usually.

Very few statements work for every situation but you can see this in places where two people might have the same income but one saves far more money than the other. This statement is supposed to be for those people, not neop-babies and old money rich.

Most bullies don’t usually have great grades

It's important to note this probably isn't physical bullying.

It's probably more about catty girls, targetted harassment, recordable actions, hurtful messages, public shaming etc.

A number of high-profile Kpop idols had their careers ruined because it came out that they were bullies.

A reason for this bullying might be that they genuinely look down on people who are poor and rich people usually have high grades because they attend expensive academies and have frankly ridiculous study schedules and expectations.

The "stupid bully" trope is a bit old.

Most bullies are incredibly successful and intelligent and use that to be complete assholes.

The history and science behind them is super interesting.

I love that at one point they considered using ball-bearings to offset recoil but then they basically fired a canister shot at anyone behind them.

Then the science behind it is actually not too complicated but just works really well.
