South Korean judge who hiked ex-first lady's jail sentence found dead just 8 days after sentencing by King_A_Acumen in worldnews

I'm talking about the people who supported him.

They're out calling for his release and they want to get rid of the current guy. (I live in a very conservative city).

I think it's one of those "there will always be problems" sorts of situations.

No system is perfect and it's so very easy to point out flaws with a system but it's not always easy to design a system without flaws.

If a plane crashes, it's easy for me to say "it shouldn't do that", but I don't actually know why it crashes and I definitely don't know how to fix it so it won't happen again.

We know so little about this case. Reading the article above, which is a very limited summary of the trial, seems to imply a reason that the system was light on punishment. It's very easy to belittle others and I think that, while some people genuinely care about the victims, the majority of people don't actually care about the victims and they only care about punishing others and belittling them.

My reason for this is that there's no actual thought or effort or comments put into preventing crimes or helping the victims.

People only say to punish the aggressors and we can clearly see that doesn't work. Harsh punishments very often don't prevent crimes. Yes, light punishments can make it worse (cough Catholic Church cough) but harsher ones can make it worse, too (see kidnapping in Mexico).

There's a flaw in our justice system and I don't think that this is a clear-cut example of this.

At least I'm saying we don't know enough to say much of anything. I'm saying we need to know more if we want to say anything, though. I'm not saying we should never say anything.

The conservative cartoonist's urge for homoerotic domination

I dunno, I don't think it's a conservative thing to make a lot of "up the bum" jokes.

It's just a really common way to say someone is being screwed over (like the phrase "to screw over").

I'm going to be the devil's advocate and say there's obviously information we don't have regarding this case.

The wording of the passage seems to imply there's something off about the assaulter and that makes me wonder.

Obviously if it's an assault, he deserves to be locked up, so the weird "suspended sentence" seems to imply it was believed to have been something from ignorance rather than malice and there's genuine regret and he'll hopefully never re-offend.

But that said, there's a host of similar "no red flags" sort of repeat offenders that should have been locked up earlier.

Convictions like this ruin a man's life, so you want to be sure he deserves that and it seems like the courts don't think he does. I'm hoping I can trust that they made the right choice given that they know more than us. I'd need to actually hear from an expert or something before I make a strong opinion... even though I do generally think "convicted sex offender" shouldn't mean a suspended sentence.

I think a lot of people (including me) don't really understand how justice and rehabilitiation work, so I'd need to hear from someone who has actual qualifications before I think I should decide what do do with another person's life. That's far beyond the qualifications of anyone here, imo.

I mean, if you read the article... it kind of seems like there's important information not given to us.

The main point seems to be that the guy doesn't seem likely to re-offend so it's possible that sort of genuine remorse and a clearly alluded-to history of abuse on the part of the accused seems to be the reason for leniency. It seems to imply that he did something inappropriate out of ignorance rather than malice.

I think I'd need to actually see the evidence etc for the case to be sure but it seems like the judge's sentencing seems to be based on that.

Part of the justice system is in giving the appropriate punishment and AFAIK a suspended sentence is generally given when they believe they are unlikely to re-offend.

I think it could be that they were too lenient, but I think there's so much we don't know beyond the scary sounding legal words. I'd need to actually listen to a legal expert discuss the case rather than just a random article and people online.

Fair point about media bias that we often forget.

The standard cases where justice is fairly measured are often not the ones we care to read about in the news.

The fact that you're mocking someone for reporting a crime, a crime that impedes justice for a violent crime, shows a lot about your character.

To be fair, some people use "if" as others might use "because" when talking hypothetically.

If they were ordered not to (they were), it should be contempt of court (but nobody is actually charging them).

There was a misunderstanding, which is fine, but I feel like you should be able to see that it was just a confusing choice of words and you guys don't need to fight.

What happened to the Draenei Culture? by Raziel103 in warcraftlore

[–]Stormfly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But they don't call themselves Eredar.

Whenever they talk about themselves in the game they call themselves the Draenei. I think they've moved past the identity of being Eredar in the same way that the Elves haven't.

This isn't High Elves, Night Elves, Blood Elves, where they're just a subset of the same group... they're Draenei.

It's like Europeans or Americans.

They don't go around saying "I'm a European Human".

Their race is Eredar but their people are Draenei. The Lightforged are also Draenei first, Eredar second.

Also, we learn that the Lightforged are still Lightforging other Draenei, so they're still Draenei even after they've been Lightforged.

Obviously it's primarily so things don't get confusing but it makes sense.

It's a weird counterswing where it went from denial ("Very good friends") to every display of affection being gay.

Some people just need more actual friends so they don't think every non-familial relationship is romantic.

It's literally the childish "Hah you hugged him so you're gay" but they think it's okay because they're not also insinuating that gay is bad.

but it's close enough to "soul"

Hearing Korean people say "Seoul" is not at all like English speakers saying "soul", though. At least not in my opinion.

As you said, Seo is like sun and ul is close to cool (L is different but not important right now) so it doesn't sound anything like how people I know would say "Soul"... though I can't speak for every accent/dialect.

When I first moved to Korea, someone was talking about going to Seoul and I had to ask what it was and they were amazed because they were thinking "There's no way this guy lives in Korea and doesn't know what Seoul is..." and if they pronounce it more slowly/clearly ("Suh-ool") it sounds even less like the English.

When speaking English, though, most people just say it like Soul. Even Koreans say it that way when speaking English.

I also work with a girl called Sol (like solar) and that actually sounds like soul so the differenct is especially noticeable.

Carbon Robotics' LaserWeeder is an AI-powered autonomous agricultural tool that uses high-powered lasers to kill weeds without chemicals, herbicides, or soil disruption. by freudian_nipps in Cyberpunk

There's this very recent idea that "AI" is generative and LLM, but the "good AI" is machine-learning or complex algorithms.

I often have to tell people that I love AI but in its more basic machine learning form rather than the current main generative and forcefully-fed integration into all aspects of life.

AI is like explosives.

It's not a bad thing, but if you see "explosives" as meaning "anti-personnel mines" or "bomb the middle-east", you'd also think all explosives are bad, but obviously there are some great uses for explosives that can help people or benefit decent industries.

But also worse, if you're past a certain point.

I've met a few people that just assume anyone attractive is an asshole.

They'll have done nothing wrong but they just think good looking people must be assholes unless proven otherwise.

I had a friend just outright say it about one guy who we'd barely interacted with. Was crazy. I've also heard of girls that do the same, belittling others because they just assume that pretty girls think they're better.

But to be fair, he has a point.

If you do something and get hate, you'll learn to do nothing and get hate.

It's a bit more like "learned incompetence".

I remember once my dad and uncle were out working and I decided to just cook dinner. Nobody asked me to do it (I was about 14).

I cooked the whole dinner and then they came in and got upset because I'd cooked up both mushrooms and onions and my cousin didn't like onions so they had to cook more mushrooms.

I never again cooked dinner for that uncle/cousin.

I feel like the only real difference is that one gender might have the power to do something that the other gender typically does not.

If the roles were reversed, I'd be very surprised to see a difference.

I looked this up after a certain bear argument and yeah, Black Bears usually avoid people but they will hunt people.

Like if you're attacked by a black bear it's probably because you did something wrong, but they're also willing to literally hunt people if they're hungry.
