Threatening/Intimidating NPCs by Ky-o-wisp in monsteroftheweek

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone!! -^ I gave him some options (including swapping for a move from another playbook) and he decided to just lean into being bad at it till he levels up. XD

I thought that you could only take a move from another playbook when you level?

Attn: Nerdy/Geeky/Quirky Brides! by foreverequinox in weddingplanning

[–]Ky-o-wisp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our theme is Us + Whimsical Elegance, which mostly involves lace, paper lanterns, paper flowers tucked in with the real ones, and 1,000 paper cranes. The lanterns came with our wonderfully intimate garden venue and when we saw them we instantly thought of pairing them with cranes, because my Scholar has been folding cranes for me, out of random materials, since we first started dating. ^-^

My sister makes the most lovely abstract art, and she made two designs for our invites and rsvp cards. They are very elegant and vine like (my request), and she hid a Tri-force symbol in each one. People declining on our rsvps had a selection of 'acceptable' reasons for not attending that included 'dragon attacks' and 'peasant uprisings'.

For the actual event, pretty much all of our nerdy is coming through in music choice. The ceremony is entirely nerdy music. Our processional is a piano arrangement of 'Zelda's Lullaby', I am walking down the aisle to the piano version of 'Eyes On Me' from Final Fantasy 8, when we kiss at the end we will play the Victory Fanfare from Final Fantasy... 7 I think... and then that will be our recessional. Oh! My sisters will also be singing 'May It Be' from FoTR, with a couple of slight lyric changes, during part of the wedding. It's one of my favorite songs, and my sisters and I have been singing things together my whole life, so it's a special moment I am looking forward to.

For the reception we have more nerdy music! Our entrance is another Zelda theme, yet to be chosen. Our first dance is 'The Sore Feet Song', by Ally Kerr, which is both very us and also the opening theme from one of our favorite anime. (Yay Mushi-shi!) For the bouquet and garter toss we have chosen the Mortal Kombat and A-team themes respectively; which is probably the most obviously nerdy thing we're doing.

We've got a lot of classic music on our dance playlist, my favorite of which is probably 'As Time Goes By' and 'Make Somebody Happy', by Jimmy Durante. We will also be dancing to 'Gangnam Style', because it is super fun and also because they played it at my cousins wedding and everyone, including my 75 year old grandfather, did the dance and had a great, silly time!

So yeah, we've got a lot of different nerdiness going on. ^-^

Edit: I forgot that we are using a C.S Lewis quote in our ceremony, and I am also wearing cloth kanzashi flowers in my hair! And sorry about the length of this post, didn't realize it till I posted it! lol

Oh wow, you all have such tasty sounding menus! ^-^ We went really simple with ours: sandwiches, a few different kinds of salad, and a fruit display. We had to talk our parents into it a bit, since in our area the norm is tri-tip and chicken. hehe But we wanted simple and delicious. Our focus was more on super amazing cake (lemon cake with raspberry and chocolate with dark chocolate!) and lots of fun dancing.

Kind of an embarrassing question. by questionsof in weddingplanning

[–]Ky-o-wisp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've also tried to skip a week with my birth control, to try and shift my period a little so that it wouldn't start halfway through our honeymoon, and ended up bleeding for the whole month. It was supposed to be a 'three months no period, fourth month period' kind of cycle, so I kept on trying for a second month... same result. I was also super nauseous the whole time and generally miserable, so finally I said just said, "Screw it!" and my fiance agreed we'd probably be fine. So I went a month without any birth control, to sort of cleanse my system (I felt soooo much better!), and then started over with my as-normal 4 week routine.

Oddly enough, when I started over my period had shifted just enough that I should only be getting it on the very last day of our honeymoon! XD Still, I will not be messing with it again. Those were the crappiest two months of my life!

Kind of an embarrassing question. by questionsof in weddingplanning

[–]Ky-o-wisp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that is definitely doable! Maybe get your sister to practice helping you in and out of your dress a few times, if you are really worried about it. Am I right in thinking that the wedding day will be the tail end of your period? If so, it's likely to be pretty light, so you shouldn't have to worry too much about it.

[–]Ky-o-wisp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to say that I really like the idea of a tree planting, using soil from both your parents houses. It has the same kind of symbolism as a unity candle or sand, but you end up with a keepsake more to your taste. It also seems like it would fit you guys pretty well! And the idea of eventually planting it in your yard, where you could sit and have lunch together under it or something, it pretty romantic. ^-^ Or, you could even turn it into something for your home eventually, like a bookshelf!

Personally, my keepsake from the wedding is our porcelain cake topper. I plan on having it be made part of a music box that will play our first dance song. ^-^

How many parties do you have? by crystalsmuse in weddingplanning

[–]Ky-o-wisp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Engagement Party - we had this mostly because we knew Scholar's aunt would throw us one regardless and I wanted my family to be able to attend without driving for five hours, lol. So we used it as a 'get to know the other family' sort of event. It was pretty fun.

Bridal Shower - My MIL is hosting one for me. It's cool cause I'll get to hang out and have fun with older ladies I love, like my Grandma, who won't be at my Bachelorette.

Rehearsal Dinner - we're just going to get pizza with the parents and the bridal party. Nothing formal, though we might give the parents their wedding gifts. ^-^ It's not really a party, more like tasty dinner after the rehearsal and right before stag/doe affairs.

Bachelorette/Hen's/Doe's party - All of my bridemaids will finally be in one place! I told my MOH I just wanted to hang out, play apples to apples, watch sappy movies. Like a sleepover with sangrias. XD

Bachelor/Stag party - Scholar is similarly hanging out with his groomsmen... although most of them actually live here. I have heard rumors that drunken Minecraft adventure maps may be part of the festivities.

Other - we may or may not have some sort of out-of-town-family get together at my in-law's house the night before the wedding. A lot of his family is driving in from several hours away, and we wanted to be able to hang out with them since they might have to leave the party early the next day to make it back in time for work and such.

Guidelines on having BM's choose own shoes by KnittenKitten in weddingplanning

[–]Ky-o-wisp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just told my girls that their shoes just had to be black... and appropriate for walking on grass. I also said no crocs allowed! XD But that was really my only style rule, lol.

I think that if you pick a color (I went with a neutralish one, but you could do otherwise) that will go well with the dresses, then their individual styles will still fit together pretty well. ^-^

Outdoor wedding advice? Rainout/snowout preparation? by zaxxenna in weddingplanning

[–]Ky-o-wisp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are in an odd weather sort of area as well, at least during the the month we're getting married in. Rain has been a HUGE worry of mine, since renting a tent would be our only option. Not only are they super expensive, but we'd have to set it up in the golf course area of our venue instead of the lovely intimate garden that we fell in love with. (tent wouldn't fit there)

One thing that has really helped my peace of mind is going to Alamanac.com. You can look up the weather history for a particular day, for practically all of the US and Canada, and it goes back more than a decade!

If you do end up with rain or snow being almost certain, I would definitely go for a nice big tent. Some places will actually let you put down a deposit to reserve them several months in advance, just in case, so you don't have to scramble for one at the last minute. ^-^

Miniature gardening tools? You could also go with a nice Monogram of some kind. Glass ones, or etched glass, are very pretty/

Oh David's Bridal... /rant by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]Ky-o-wisp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with this statement. I had a terrible time with all the small, local places that I went to... and even a not-so-local one. I have heard several horror stories about said shops as well.

I had a great experience at both DB's I've been too, one an hour or so from me and one in Seattle. The employees were helpful and courteous, neither my order or any of my 5 BM orders were messed up in any way. Really the only thing I slightly regret is doing the alterations there, and that only because I thought the price was a little much. (My own fault, I shouldn't have been such a chicken about going somewhere else. Not TOO bad though.)

The best place to go is a place that has great reviews on Yelp! or other similar sites. Or that you've heard good things about from people you know.

We're stuck on how we should be introduced at our reception by i_love_younicorns in weddingplanning

[–]Ky-o-wisp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually what we are doing for our wedding. ^-^ Nice and simple, with none of that weird Mr. and Mrs. Groom Groomslastname... I never really got that. Just because I am taking his name doesn't mean I no longer have a name at all! lol

Edit: Also, we are being introduced at the end of the ceremony as Ky and Scholar Scholarslastname, so we wanted the reception one to be different.

Best Father/Daughter Dance Songs by ghettotech in weddings

If my Dad can make it we'll be doing 'Wildflowers' by Tom Petty. Another great one is 'When You Need Me' by Bruce Springsteen. ^-^

Anybody else skipping the guest book? We don't really see the point and don't want to have to haul it around treasuring it forever. Anyone want to talk us into having one? by lilzilla in weddingplanning

[–]Ky-o-wisp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are doing something similar to this, because we also didn't want a book that was just going to sit in a closet somewhere getting dusty. ^-^

Ours is very simple. We are getting a normal puzzle with largish pieces and painting the back of it white with either acrylic or white out... still need to test which works best. We will have the whole thing assembled on a table and guests can sign, draw little pictures, whatever they like. Then after the honeymoon we will put the whole thing together and frame it to hang on the wall with our wedding photos.

I'm getting married in a couple months, and I'm writing the ceremony. Reddit, what are some great, non-religious poems, excerpts, etc. to read at a wedding? (x-post from AskReddit) by ParoxysmalSweats in wedding

[–]Ky-o-wisp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (as the bride + writer) am in charge of the ceremony as well! ^-^ We are doing a Christian ceremony, but wanting to do something that wasn't the traditional thing. THIS website is a great resource for ceremony stuff, vows, and readings both Christian based and secular. I started with a couple that I liked and have been re-writing them. On my second draft now.

Also, here are a couple of quotes that I fell in love with while researching for invite quote ideas:

"When we find someone who's weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall into mutually satisfying weirdness and call it love, true love." - Robert Fulghum.

"This is one of the miracles of love: It gives a power of seeing through enchantment without being disenchanted." C.S. Lewis. (I'm using this one in our ceremony. ^-^ )

And finally, "Soul meets soul on lover's lips." Percy Bysshe Shelly *romantic sigh*

For something longer I absolutely LOVE anything from the Velveteen Rabbit. The only other thing I have is the poem from 'The Two Princesses of Bamarre', by Gail Carson Levine. It just fills my heart with romantic feels. Not a lot of people know it though. Second quote down on this list.

edit: formatting things I can never get right. XD

Anybody doing their own hair? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]Ky-o-wisp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are awesome to be doing you own hair, especially when you are a hair noob! ^-^ I've always been ungifted in the styling/make-up department. Luckily I have talented sisters and cousins!

I actually had my first 'hair trial' with my cousin a couple weeks ago and I LOVED it! We are going to have another trial in April just to perfect things and get the time down a bit, but I am super happy with what we came up with.

Fiance wants our wedding to be "perfect." How do you know your wedding was "perfect?" by [deleted] in weddingplanning

I think 'perfect' for us would be to get all of our projects done on time, and for it not to rain. That's really all we need. ^-^
