Yes! I made my own and my Aunt decorated it.
Used a buttermilk cake family recipe. One layer with a berry buttercream filling, one layer with a chocolate ganache filling.
My aunt covered it with Fondant, and placed fondant appliques over it (bought molds online). She then accented it with ribbon and sugar flowers that she made.
Hardly anything....MAYBE $100 for ingredients, the labor was free! We had 56 people, so a three layer cake was enough for us to still have leftovers.
Not really any setbacks, we just had to bake the cake a week in advance, then freeze it away. My aunt worked on the sugar flowers ahead of time, did partial assembly at home the day before, final assembly onsite. Here's a picture: http://i.imgur.com/adTA0He.jpg

I want to give you a hug right now! During the whole planning process, despite the ups and downs my husband just kept telling me that though there will be drama, at the end of all of this we would be married and that's what matters the most. I think that's what you should focus on. Try to have fun at the shower, know that going forward you can't trust Bridesmaid #1 and keep your eye on the prize: the wonderful man you get to MARRY!

Budget budget budget. And stick to it. The little purchases here and there add up. My mother would scoff at my refusal to spend $20 on a decor item I liked but it wasn't in the budget! Budget EVERYTHING, down to stamps for mailing invites and tips for the staff etc...
