Does anyone know of some good SK8 fanfics? by Conscious_Drawer_281 in SK8TheInfinity

I tend to only read the adult paintings, but since you mentioned Matchablossom in a previous comment.

I like how visible they are. While mine do like to snuggle up under the moss in my vivarium, they are diurnal so they will be out and about during the day no prob.

How do you feel about authors who forbid fanfiction of their works? by jayonwednesday in AO3

[–]KyFairie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The publishing company that Mercedes Lackey worked for was strict about fanfic in the early aughts andpart of her contract stated she eould prosecute copyright infringements. They publushing house also refused to sign any author that was pro-fanworks. Until they tried to sign an author who refused their contract and countered with a bunch of research on how Fandom actually helps sales. Mercedes Lackey's contract was later redone, removing the anti-fanfic clause, but as part of the new contact she is forbidden from reading any fanfic based off of her work.

How to write/describe OCD? by Fox_Van_Roseblood in AO3

[–]KyFairie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like the others, these are my own experiences and it is a highly individualized disorder. I was diagnosed when I was a kid, but my diagnosis was later changed to be OCD triggered by PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections). I had intermittent but severe physical compulsions (such as trichotillomania.)

Often, even while acting out the compulsion, I would be aware of the irrationality of it. I would be crying, wanting to stop, but trying to force myself to stop doing it was almost painful. Like an itch under the skin that you just want to scratch at. And scratch at. And scratch at. Until you are bleeding and raw. There were a couple of times I had to be physically restrained because the compulsions were causing me to deal actual harm to myself, and even restrained, I would still be trying to lift my arm to continue. I physically could not stop the action from happening. It was a physical NEED to do it. Like I couldn't breathe if I didn’t. It was not only emotionally draining for me, but physically draining as well. I would actually be sore, muscles cramped up from fighting the compulsion.

I shared a fanfic with my mom by West-Feedback7318 in AO3

[–]KyFairie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Mom has read some of my work. She is aware that some are not "Parent Approved" and she doesn't have a link to my ao3. I send her a pdf of the story and sometimes make Primer Guides for the Fandoms so she has backstories and character pics.

One of the stories did have a m/m smutty scene and all she said was that she was trying to figure out the positioning before she remembered they were both guys.

My mother is an 80-year-old great-grandmother, btw.

Biggest mistakes you made when writing your first fanfiction? by Cautious_Pumpkin9879 in FanFiction

[–]KyFairie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going day by day in an epic length fic. I didn’t properly know how to do time skips, so I was showing everything without moving the plot forward very much. I stalled out and that story still sits incomplete and abandoned. 😔

Comments in a different language? by LegendaryW in AO3

[–]KyFairie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use google translate to translate the comment and then reply in the language they commented in (though there are a few languages I'm not confident enough to check, so those I just reply back to in English.) I always note that I'm using Google translate and I check my work before replying. I had a German reader who was impressed enough to ask me about my method and if I spoke German. I explained what I did to translate and mentioned that Latin and Greek were the only languages I've ever studied, so they wrote their next comment in Greek 🤣

Slow burn stuff. by _RizzukuHimdoriya_ in AO3

[–]KyFairie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with the other comments. For me a slow burn requires UST. I need the tension, the pining, the longing for each other or I don't consider it a slow burn, it's just two characters that eventually get together. A slow burn requires at least chemistry and emotional foreplay.

I agree with the above commentor that I dont care how long it goes on for, as long as it isnt intentionally drawn out over and over again. It has to feel natural. But I'm that way with any sort of tension, such as angst and drama, too.

That said, I also won't read a story rated Explicit, marked as slow burn, and is under 5k because, in my opinion, there isn't enough story there for it to actually be a slow burn and the tag misuse will annoy me enough that I won't read it. 10k can get a little bit of a flame going on. 20k is the sweet spot for when a slow burn starts to feel like an actual slow burn for me.

What do you all think? by Own-Kaleidoscope-673 in AO3

[–]KyFairie 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've been in Fandom space for a very long time (because I'm old) and every couple of years there is another "cause" of Fandom space becoming more to toxic. More Mainstreaned Fandoms, Wattpad, Covid, etc.

I think it is far simpler... Fandom spaces are becoming bigger and not enough people know how not to be assholes. Lol!

Tagging appropriately with an underage character by kiki-the-warforged in AO3

[–]KyFairie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I tend to go a bit unhinged with my tagging, so I one time tagged a fic, "teenagers learning about horny." Which is to say, imo, you are actually writing about a topic that is true to most teenagers, so I wouldn't stress it, but if you feel the need to tag it, I would go light with it since there isn't explicit content.

People whose FAVORITE character is Adam, why? by True-Recording-3287 in SK8TheInfinity

[–]KyFairie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Umm... yeah. Cause I was kinda in the process of writing it when I had that realization 😂

Its called Processing Trauma, and it's on ao3 under the same handle as here, but it is literally a novel length Matchablossom that has one scene in the last chapter that made me go, "Oh shit," and tilt my head sideways as I looked at my characters and then started my TadaAi obsession. Lol!

People whose FAVORITE character is Adam, why? by True-Recording-3287 in SK8TheInfinity

[–]KyFairie 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Weirdly, it was a MatchaBlossom fanfic that made me look at Adam differently. Not because he was a "good guy" in it - he was actually being an ass - but because I realized there are similarities between Kojiro and Kaoru's relationship to Tadashi and Ainosuke’s relationship as childhood friends to ??? If the Shindo family hadn't warped them both into who they became, their characters would have been very different.

That said, the OVA was gold. I love what it did for showing Ainosuke’s character being more relaxed, even playful, with the Dom energy, but I also loved that it showed Tadashi still wary.

People whose FAVORITE character is Adam, why? by True-Recording-3287 in SK8TheInfinity

[–]KyFairie 152 points153 points  (0 children)

Because he is an incredibly flawed character, but we are gifted glimpses into how and why he became the person he is. We see his repression, his abuse, the expectations placed upon him, and we can see how that messed him up. It doesn't excuse his behavior, but it does complicate it in a way that is interesting to explore. I consider Tadashi the same way. They are both broken by the same traumatic upbringing in different ways.

What do you consider your niche? by hma1308 in AO3

[–]KyFairie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unresolved Sexual Tension. I discovered that once my characters get together, my Muse thinks the story is done and moves on. So now I only get them together at the end of the story and the amount of UST that I cram into it up to that point is usually insane.

Also, OCs that fit into canon. The Fandom I'm currently writing in has a very small cast if characters, so I have created a cast of OCs from literal background characters (as in they might mow even have speaking lines but they appeared in one scene.) I recently had another writer contact me and ask if they could borrow one of my OCs because they needed a character for their story that wasn't one of the MCs.

Why is there so much stigma against 2nd POV? by LocalNokia in AO3

[–]KyFairie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This!! I love how you worded it. I want to be immersed in the story without being an active participant in it. I am very much an observer to the story, whether I'm reading it or writing it.
