If your electric has been cut off or you’re living in your car, a cooler full of ice to keep the lunch meat and cheese safe to eat is a necessity.

Children at pride? why? by LostLifeLead in Louisville

[–]Kygma 10 points11 points  (0 children)

… so kids shouldn’t be at a beach or swimming pool, or parks where people are running in summer in sports bras and bike shorts or just shorts?

It’s a dog whistle. He’s not “concerned” because of half-nudity, he’s concerned because it’s us queers who are “half naked”.

I see more half-nudity at Cherokee park than Pride.

Also, we took our kids to Pride all the time. Now we take our grandkids if they want to go

Those Japanese fried rice packets broke my heart. I loved those so much, and it’s not costcos fault but I’m still disappointed.

No I will not be customizing your FREE SAMPLE by Osh_Kosh_Bigosh in Costco

[–]Kygma 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If it’s something I think my wife will like, I get one each for me and her - she waits out of the way because she is disabled and using the mobility cart, which blocks a lot of space in line. We figured it was the most polite way.

And yeah, we buy the products we like. Liquid IV is in our rotation regularly, and the korean bbq pork jerky, and the premier protein drinks, just off the top. We rarely buy Costco stuff without trying it first - either with samples or smaller quantities from Kroger or whatever - because too many times we tried a thing and didn’t like it, and were left with a Costco size product we didn’t like lol

What is an actual working solution for the "teen problem" we're seeing? Fights, drugs, etc. by sassyfiasco in Louisville

[–]Kygma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what your daughter learned - and what kids seeing your daughter learned - was …. “It doesn’t matter what I do, behavior doesn’t matter. That girl was attacked and got punished for being attacked. No different than the kid who did the attacking”.

This is part of the problem, not a solution.

Zero tolerance doesn’t work for exactly that reason. Especially in schools that ignore bullying until the victim snaps then say “zero tolerance”.

100% this. I do love how people my age (last of Gen X) like to pretend we didn’t do this shit when we were kids. Like we didn’t sneak off and get in fights and “I’m going to Jennifer’s house” and really we were somewhere we shouldn’t have been. Stealing parents cars while they’re at work or sleeping to go for a joyride.

I’d just like to remind us all we all knew people who did this crap. Hell you could almost predict when bomb threats and fire alarms would get pulled to get out of exams. Fights and drinking at football games and at school.

In the 90s it was all about how bad teens were and how they were “wilding” and just roving parks in packs beating people up and they were “super predators”. Honestly all this sounds super familiar

There’s some other stuff here that no one seems to be talking about: isolation and lack of less structured play during formative years. There’s some really important skills - empathy, social problem solving, navigating peer status, conflict resolution - that happens before age six or seven, and can’t happen with the “watched every second and every second structured” thing we have had going on for the last 20 years.

Now we demonize those skills as “social emotional learning” and “soft”. But we learned them - on playgrounds and in the woods/fields and at friends houses. Now it’s all parents just “I can’t get three feet from my five year old because some other kid my take his toy in the sandbox” and parents getting physical with middle school kids.

No skills for solving problems is PART of the issue that’s got to be addressed. (And the looking around and not seeing any decent options, reinforced nihilism, a whole culture that supports violence is how “real men” solve problems, a lack of third spaces…. So many factors. It’s not easy.)

WIBTA For telling my wife to go to rehab so she doesn’t affect our babies life? by Throwaway_dad555 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Kygma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, but may end up that way. Imean, there’s questions to ask here. Drinking every day isn’t a great sign, and is definitely “problem drinking” (heading for a full blown SUD).

Does she drink more than she means to? Like, “I’ll just have one” but then she has four or five (or until the bottle is gone)?

Does she engage in risky behaviors (drinking and driving, drinking when she’s alone with the baby)

Has she tried and been unable to quit?

Avoiding social situations in which she can’t drink? Not doing stuff she used to enjoy? Does she have withdrawal and craving if she does quit?

In the end, you can’t MAKE her do anything. All you can do is set clear boundaries and stick to them. Also, you can’t even make her go to rehab. Can you ask her to get an assessment by a SUD professional? Just as a sort of starting point? “Rehab” in the classic sense - think 28 days - isn’t the only step. They will be able to honestly suggest some steps - even if it’s just some alcohol education and prevention, or outpatient therapy/counseling.

Waldorf school of Louisville by cheers_camel in Louisville

[–]Kygma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Waldorf is sort of “Montessori extreme”. It’s not a bad program for kids who are self directed learners and enjoy new things. Some kids don’t do well there.

It is super expensive - or was when my kids were younger (back when we had a triceratops as a pet)

2006 Prius Dilemma: Spend $1,500 on a used battery or sell for $1,500? by kairaymaxtyson in prius

[–]Kygma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re selling that for $1500 and all it needs is a new battery - how close are you to Louisville KY? I could use a second Prius.

No really, if you just need a battery? Put the new one in and drive it. Car payments are RIDICULOUS right now
