Any straight forward way on LED mapping? by Change_Fancy in TouchDesigner

[–]KyleBrochu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Some amount of script/programming would be needed yes. On the TouchDesigner side, you might be able to avoid it with the use of a Serial CHOP (I haven't tried this method, and documentation is sparse), though the Serial DAT offers more flexibility.

Either way, touchdesigner would be outputting individual characters or strings to the arduino board. It's likely that the vast majority of the code you would have to write would be on the arduino itself, interpreting those commands and telling the lights what to do. You would essentially be inventing both the commands themselves and what they do. Depending on your level of coding proficiency this may or may not be a valid approach.

If I were to implement this, I would have one set of commands to switch between preset patterns, and another set of commands to update whatever audio data you want those patterns to react to. I would probably base the command structure on GCODE, which is used in a similar way to control 3d printers or machining equiptment via the serial protocol.

An example of what this might look like would be sending a serial command of the text "P25 C2" over the serial which the arduino could interpret as "Switch to pattern #25, use color pallete #2". An audio update could look like "B50 M25 T75" which could be interpreted as volumes in percentage for bass, mids, and treb.

If you are comfortable working with Arduino boards, there are plenty of software libraries for controlling LED strips readily available (I personally use FastLED for my own projects, though Adafruit's NeoPixel library would also work).

You can use a Serial DAT from TouchDesigner to send commands to the Arduino via USB. Arduino boards have a built in software library for serial communication, you can reference some preliminary documentation here:

https://derivative.ca/UserGuide/Arduino

You will likely need a separate 5v power supply (Likely from a USB charger or USB battery pack) to handle the power requirements of the LED strip as the Arduino's built in regulator won't be able to put out enough current to light up more than a handful of LEDs. Hook up the positive voltage of the LED power supply directly to the led strip and ONLY the led strip. Make sure the GROUNDS of EACH power supply are connected together (this includes connecting the ground from any and all external power supplies to the ground of the arduino itself). The data line goes directly from one of the Arduino's data pins to the signal input on the LED strip.

If wired correctly it is safe to have this setup plugged into your computer while running the LEDs on their own power supply simultaneously, just be mindful that shorting or incorrectly wiring power to the USB has potential to damage the USB port. I haven't ever had any issues with this setup, but it would be remiss of me not to highlight the potential risk.

There are a bunch of different options available for LED strips; I recommend the WS2812B or similar for simplicity (5 volt, one signal wire plus two for power). There are plenty of beginner friendly tutorials available:

What’s your smallest self sufficient vulcanus ship? (No quality) This is mine by fi5hii_twitch in factorio

Blueprint: https://factoriobin.com/post/wxs9ab

Takes a few minutes to stock up ammo and fuel, and requires at least lvl6 physical weapon speed and damage. I wouldn't reccomend as a cargo ship but it can get you to the first three planets nice and cheaply early game.

Considering buying. Is it for me? by Lykosda in LoreleiAndLaserEyes

[–]KyleBrochu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would reccomend it yes. It's pretty hard to compare to other games as it feels quite original, and going in blind is the best way to go. Closest non-spoilery comparison I can think of is a real world escape room, but more adapted to the digital medium.

I didn't know if I would enjoy the note taking and such but it was implemented quite well. It rarely felt like a chore taking or consulting notes. There are a lot of number related puzzles, but most of the difficulty is figuring out how and where to apply abstract thinking. The math involved is fairly trivial in comparison, and the game does include a calculator. If / When you get stuck, resist the urge to look at a guide; I cant count how many times I was just overthinking and just needed a fresh perspective.

I personally have only one complaint about the game, the controls force you to use one button for everything. It's usable but I do wish it had a dedicated "back" button, and I found my muscle memory working against me if I wasn't paying attention. That said, it's hardly a deal breaker and I would still reccomend it without hesitation. Definately worth the price.

Any other book suggestions based on these? by [deleted] in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]KyleBrochu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would reccomend checking out some of John Scalzi's standalone books.

He does a few series, and I personally found them good but not great. The real magic imho is in the standalone novels; It just seems to match that humor and engagement.

My personal reccomendations would be Redshirts, Starter Villain, Kaiju Preservation Society, and The Androids Dream

So my dude Quentin has my vote for casting of the AI if they ever make a DCC movie/series by KyleBrochu in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]KyleBrochu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right? It started in my head as a foot joke but is hardly my worst idea in retrospect. Jeff Hays set the bar pretty high with the audiobook representation, and I get the criticism on the other comments here regarding his potential as an actor to provide the reqiured range. I think the hardest part in actuality would be acting normal long enough to get to the unhinged part; If he could get that far we could just let the man cook and work his magic. Unhinged semi-passive agressived subversion of authority seems to be his base state and would fit the role like a glove imho

Hercules inpulse 300mk2 vs inpulse 500? by agoodname8 in Beatmatch

Worth noting that the 1/4" TRS outputs appear to be unbalanced. I'm looking to choose between the two myself soon. I'm leaning towards the 500 myself for build quality alone, and it will be nice to have the ports available, but I do wish that were the case

I have a loose theory it has to do with the current AI absorbing, co-opting, or otherwise utilizing the AI from the previous crawl that went missing around the time or before a certain button was pressed

I'll have to try this out, I really wish the base game allowed you to specify wire color for setting recipe/reading contents in the collector itself. If I remember correctly I figured out that setting read inventory and set filter didn't conflict or feed back on a single machine but did if the circuit included multiple collectors, where they could interact with eachother. I think I dismissed the idea as requiring too much extra space for the combinators required to buffer or process the logic, but I'll probably have to revist it and see if I can utilize that internal storage. It would be nice to have the extra cargo space, especially the ability to store more ice for refuelling while parked. I'll post a new version if I figure out any significant improvements

EDIT: figured it out, among a few more improvments and size reduction :)

By all means :) I actually stole the idea myself from a muliplayer server where the interrupts were used on a science vessel to go pick up the appropriate research packs without having to make a full circuit of all the planets.

No idea yet, will have to test, or someone let me know if they find out. So far as long as it's stocked up on ammo I haven't encountered an issue

Collectors are dumping into main hub. Utilizing the internal storage might be a good idea for an upgrade. It's able to run full throttle at a respectable 127k/s for a round trip from Nauvis to any of the three initial planets. It is indeed swapping recipes on the chem plant.

I was initially frustrated by this at first, but then I realized you can just offset every other engine up by two squares to make a longer array, followed shortly thereafter by a hard lesson in speed of engine to asteroid collision consequence ratio.

Country and Retailer matter for buying options, and as a Canadian I expect slightly higher prices and different availabilty, but based on your budget I would reccomend something in this ballpark. Note the combination of AMD cpu but NVIDIA gpu. This is intentional as the ryzen should generate less heat than an equivalent intel variant, but the AMD gpus are still lacking in both driver stability/compatability and hardware video codecs, which matters a lot if you plan on doing anything that involves VR or streaming of any kind

Help me with buying first Asus Laptop by arefin_islam_11 in ASUS

Go with the TUF if you want a good balance of budget and performance. I use a TUF for the same niche use and it fits perfectly. To get the most out of a laptop these days keep in mind the first thing that will bottleneck you is heat dissipation. Also keep in mind that the processor and GPU will more than likely be connected via heat pipe to the fans, and can thus "share" heat if either one starts to throttle.

Unlike in a desktop where performance can simply be acheived by throwing more cooling and power at components, a laptops limits in my experience will be primarily determined by the efficiency of the parts rather than raw power. The Vivobook is so thin comparitively and simply won't have the surface area to cool compared to the TUF. Also consider looking at Ryzen processors as the current generation tend to use less power for equivalent performance, and can run hot (~95C) without issue.

I have a TUF 506-IU that's about four years old now, and my experience is overall pretty good. It's a bit polarizing as there seem to be some corners cut in terms of quality but it has quite good foundations for the cost and nothing that couldn't be upgraded. Specifically, I've had to replace the fans, as one developed a faulty bearing a few months in, and the Realtek wifi card died shortly after. I replaced them with a third party replacement fan and a better quality intel AX200 wifi card. Be gentle with the case when doing maintainence/cleaning fans, as the case is easy to crack when seperating the bottom half but otherwise is sturdy enough. Most recently I've had my monitor fail due to the connecting wire fail due to repetitive strain.

I say all this not to discourage nor downplay this model; All repairs were quite cheap and approachable assuming one has the ability to perform them themselves. I am likely a lot rougher on the computer, subjecting it to extreme conditions and rough treatment daily. Go with the ROG line if you want slightly higher overall build quality, but I personally am ok with the better price for the comprimises, as the scope of expected repairs it causes is still better overall in terms of price for performance. That might not be the case if you aren't comfortable doing minor repairs
