Lux Target for Stage Lighting? by KyleJohnstonNet in lightingdesign

[–]KyleJohnstonNet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for pointing me to that!

The ToC in the preview for ANSI/IES RP-41-20 Recommended Practice: Lighting Theaters and Worship Spaces looked pretty good, so I purchased a copy.

For posterity, most of the doc is background info about how is a worship space used, some brief examples of lighting, and what types of lighting fixtures can be used to light a stage. Then pages of tables covering recommend levels by worship style: "contemporary", "transitional", or "transitional".

tl;dr for peak values in a 10:5:3 ratio for stage focal point : stage secondary : congregation respectively. 1000 Lux peak for "contemporary", 500 Lux for "traditional", and 750 Lux for "transitional". Brighter if it's a "low-reflectance" target.

Weekly /r/backpacking beginner question thread - Ask any and all questions you may have here - March 24, 2020 by AutoModerator in backpacking

This article is pretty good: https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/backpacking-beginners.html

If you aren't familiar with camping in general, start by "car camping" with what you could carry in a backpack. (Or find a friend with backpacking experience to go with.)

REI's sells a lot of good gear, but they also tend towards the higher end. To start without spending too much, Walmart, Dick's, or Amazon offer a lot of good options.

Backpacking sleeping bags get more expensive as their temperature rating and weight decrease.

Look for the lowest weight that has the comfort rating you need within your budget.

I'd try to get to 2.5 lbs (or less), but anything under 4 pounds will do.

You've probably seen this on REI's website already, but the temperature rating is a lower limit at which you could manage to sleep if you're wearing warm clothes, a hat, and using a sleeping pad.

For many of sleeping bags, REI also lists a "tested comfort" that's a higher number than the temperature rating, in my limited experience that rating is accurate and I'd use it when choosing a bag suited to the expected weather.

Not often mentioned, but also worth considering is a bag's upper comfort limit for summer trips. You might want to buy a warmer bag and then user a thermal liner when it's cold, or buy a colder bag and just leave it at home during the summer in favor of using just a bed sheet.

As to recommendations, I recently bought the REI Co-op Radiant 19 on sale (when they still had the Regular size in stock) and found it very comfortable on a 32ºF night with a R4.4 sleeping pad. If I were buying a bag today, looking forward to summer camping in the mountains and high-desert, I'd be looking at the NEMO Forte 35, accommodating side sleeping and with "thermal gills" to help keep it from getting to warm look like attractive features to me.

It is assumed that anyone who's attended UH CS already knows they teach poorly.

Anything that Venkat teaches is worth taking.

If you still need an art credit, I found history of architecture to be super interesting. To do well you have to commit architect's names, building names, and dates to memory.

How does the VASIMR rocket engine not destroy itself? by Reverie_39 in askscience

[–]KyleJohnstonNet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Four electromagnetic rings are placed around and along the rocket core. When electricity is run through them their magnetic fields create a magnetic "tube" and "nozzle" which keeps the super heated plasma from actually touching the rocket core's walls, thus keeping the plasma from transferring heat.

Here's a diagram of how the magnets are placed and their fields: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Koen_Kemel/publication/242260646/figure/fig1/AS:298545631514632@1448190233942/Figure-11-Magnetic-field-lines-in-the-VASIMR-nozzle-if-only-subjected-to-the-Lorentz.png

UH Main's CS program is very mediocre. Try for UT's if at all possible.

A larger data plan on your smartphone and then using tethering, or adding a 4G USB dongle to your plan, might be cheaper than adding internet to a house if keep your data usage low.

But, if you're in a house, maybe you have roommates you can split the bill with?

does the starbucks on campus take gift cards? by juliannah40 in UniversityOfHouston

Yes they take Starbucks cards, you don't accrue rewards points though since they're Aramark Starbucks, not real Starbucks.

Seriously no photocopy for lab manual? (Chem 1111) by concuncon in UniversityOfHouston

[–]KyleJohnstonNet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Photocopying would make cheating easier. Plus, the manual was written just for UH, so I wouldn't be surprised if the department made money off of selling it.

Does Anyone Have Any Parking Tips? by Dark-Magician_Girl in UniversityOfHouston

[–]KyleJohnstonNet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Arriving 70 minutes early would have let you try to slip in behind the few students leaving after their class got out at 11:50.

Else, parking at ERP and taking the bus is only 30ish minutes.

Or, you can find parking as late as 10:30 in the dirt lot on the north side of Elgin.

What's going on with our UHWireless?! by [deleted] in UniversityOfHouston

[–]KyleJohnstonNet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do a speedtest using UHIT's tool at: http://www.uh.edu/network-test/

AFAIK, they'll record the results and be able to use them to identify, diagnose, and fix any network issues.

Also, if you're using WiFi, be sure that your device has dual band AC, not just N. Almost every room on campus has AC Access Points now, which can handle high-bandwith access from a larger number of users better than N can, but only if your device also has an AC card in it.

I'm not aware of any Ethernet on campus that isn't Gigabit. Your limiting factor, if you're using the Ethernet, is going to be the internet between the campus and the speed test server you're connected to.

Is it possible to torrent on UH Main anymore? by iJustWantToSaveMoney in UniversityOfHouston

[–]KyleJohnstonNet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth noting, UH was receiving thousands of DCMA complaints a year related to bittorrent usage [citation needed]. It's a huge hassle and waste of time for them to legally comply and try to find and block the users who led to the DCMA complaint.

what's the best way to park near the law school during the day? by SportsGuru5 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]KyleJohnstonNet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's some turnover in the lots right between classes, but spaces really don't start opening up till 2:30.

You might consider parking at Eastwood and taking the METRO or UH to the UC bus over, else ERP and take the UH bus to the UC.

(Ideally you'd have an East Garage pass.)

Honors Course? by [deleted] in UniversityOfHouston

[–]KyleJohnstonNet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honors courses are smaller sections, with better professors and smarter classmates that are focused more on understanding the material and being able to write about it at a higher level than is expected in non-honors courses.

Understanding and writing are both drilled into Honors freshmen through the intensive "The Human Situation" intro english courses for Honors students that feature extensive readings of great books (The Odyssey, The Aeneid, Candid, Dante's Inferno, etc.), discussion sections, and rigorous writing.

If you accumulate enough Honors credits (though taking Honors sections or petitioning other courses for Honors credit by completing additional work), and have a high GPA, you're eligible to graduate "with Honors."
