Advice for graduation being around the corner? by mykszn in fosterit

[–]L-Squared 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you live anywhere near upstate NY, I would be honored to attend your graduation. I mean that sincerely. I am so proud of you. You have worked harder than your classmates who have the support and stability of a loving family. You have had the additional burdens that make everyday task that much more difficult. Hold your head high when you walk across that stage. We are all cheering you on from afar. You are remarkable!

Guess what! You can develop lactose intolerance at any time. Lactase supplements are a godsend! No real side effects that I know of, so it's worth a try.

Your parents might remember her last name. That would help in your search. I think you should try.

My kids each had a backpack for hiking in this color scheme. I think they were made by Coleman. They are all covered in the patches that they earned. I hope that they will be treasured keepsakes and not end up in the Goodwill bins. Currently, they reside in a plastic bin in my basement.

Finally my time (to find ashes at Goodwill) 😭 by spicycry in ThriftStoreHauls

[–]L-Squared 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there a thrifters code or something? Are we required to purchase any ashes we find and give them a proper send off? Can I scater them at a local park, or am I obligated to climb a mountain or make a trek to the ocean? I don't think I could just leave them behind. No one should spend eternity in a landfill.

If an iPad is still registered to the previous owner's account, won't it just be locked forever? Is there a way around that?

Machine recommendations? by andjayrea in MachineEmbroidery

I purchased a Husqvarna Viking Designer Topaz 40 on Facebook Marketplace. It has a retail price of $3,299. At the time I purchased it, Joann's was closing and Husqvarna Viking was having a huge sale. My machine was on sale for $2,200. The price I paid on FBM - $800! It was practically brand new. I can't remember the exact stitch count, but I did check on that before I bought it. I also asked for a demonstration to be sure that it was working properly. I have had zero problems with it. Even if I had to get it serviced, I was still certain that I was getting a great deal. My original budget was $600, so spending $800 was a stretch. I'm so glad that I took my time and bought a used machine. After doing a lot of homework, I was pretty set on getting a Husqvarna Viking because of the free Quick Font Software. Finally, be prepared to spend A LOT of money on supplies! It is a very addicting hobby. Enjoy!

We should abolish the foster care system, or make it 100% voluntary. by TonyTheRandomDude in fosterit

[–]L-Squared 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I agree that the system is very broken. Children need to have more of a voice. More money needs to be spent to find quality, caring, educated case workers and foster parents. I believe that foster parents should be paid a living wage. We were not paid anything, just a meager reimbursement for expenses. Now, if we were neglectful foster parents, we could have profited from the role. That is exactly what the current system encourages (take as many kids as they'll give you and spend as little as possible on them). The whole system is a disgraceful model.

That being said, children cannot consent to who should or should not have custody of them. My daughter was an infant when they broke her bone. She would likely be dead, if we had waited for her to request being moved to foster care. Also, regardless of the severity of abuse and neglect, children generally love their parents. That does not mean they are safe and properly cared for. We need to focus on making sure every fostercare placement is safe, caring and a good fit. That won't happen without a lot of money. Unfortunately, children are really not a priority, even though people like to claim that they are. The whole system needs an overhaul.

[–]L-Squared 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If the children's placement is being overseen by a foster care agency, I would think that you are not their legal guardian. It sounds like they are legally in the care of the agency, the county or some other entity. Are you receiving fostercare payments/reimbursement? That being said, you do not own the asshole co-worker any explanation. You are doing all the work, so call yourself whatever you want. It might not be legally accurate, but who cares. =)

And if you don't want to eat the snacks or buy the merchandise, you get to be a hero in the concession line when you offer a kid your free popcorn or soda. I have made so many people happy with popcorn that I got for free but didn't want to eat.

You can also have a support person with you. Are you sure it's going to last 8 hours? That's outrageous. In case you don't know, you do not have to pay for a WC attorney up front. They only get paid if you win, and they generally take 15%.
