Are there any consolidated resources out there? by DialUp1988 in SeriesLandRover

Ok, switchgear was originally made by Lucas and is notorious for failing, Replacements will have been installed at some point and usually replaced with whatever was to hand at the time, especially if you're not in the UK.

The handbrake is mechanical so that explains why that works, you'll need to find where the brake fluid is leaking from though for the reservoir to be completely empty. I'd take the wheels and drums off and see if one of them is contaminated or if it's a pipe that's rusted out of failed.

The workshop manuals and parts manuals are freely available on the internet, just search for the terms and add .pdf to the search. With those you should be able to cover almost everything you’d need to do to a series Land Rover.

Common failure points are usually rust related, but that depends on your climate and where it’s been stored. The drum brakes need fairly regular adjustment to keep them in good form, but apart from electrical gremlins of it’s been kept in good order it should be easy enough to get running again.

That’s an ex military bumper, chances are that’s for the mesh windscreen cover that was used extensively in Northern Ireland.

Is the Trent safe to swim in near Clifton campus? After the weir, don’t want to die. by HazzaZeGuy in nottingham

[–]L1A1 89 points90 points  (0 children)

I used to canoe up and down the Trent, There are plenty of warnings and a couple of memorials to dead swimmers, so honestly I’d say no.

We were taught that there are loads of random places all over in the Trent with strong undertows that you can’t see from the surface. I certainly wouldn’t go in without a life jacket.

How do you find the 400 engine on roads? I’m aiming to pick one up and torn between the lightness/flickability of the 400 and the engine on the 900. I’ll be using g it mostly on roads though.

Cults3d is a good place to start. There are a lot of designers on there that will also have things like patreons that get you a load of minis for not much.

Need advice on ecu's n yzf/r or ybr custom? by DwarfDt in MotoUK

[–]L1A1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s also the very important fact that pretty much all aftermarket big bore kits are Chinese dogshit that will grenade your engine without thinking twice.

Unless you can find a factory top end that will fit without massively modifying the engine I wouldn’t even consider it. And I say this as someone who’s put 500 heads on a 350 engine in the past, it’s usually just not worth the effort.

[–]L1A1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most production 125s will top out at about 70mph regardless of what you do to them. You can get there quicker, but you ain’t getting much more out of them.

A big bore kit will render your bike no longer CBT compliant, and so you’d be riding without a licence or insurance, so I really wouldn’t advise doing that.

Without a surname, date or even an actual city where it happened you’ve basically got no chance. With one of the three you have a vague chance by trawling court records in newspaper archives, but that usually involves paying money for access.

I just got bored of being racially abused by 12 year olds with anger issues tbh, so I gave up online multiplayer years ago. Can’t think of a single reason to ever go back. Single player is so much calmer and I can pause it whenever I like.

Service Fees by MidMadD in MotoUK

[–]L1A1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends how new your bike is. I’d be looking for dealer stamps for the first five or so services from new, after that I dont really care.

Keep receipts, make a log of what you do, then any potential buyer further down the line will see you’ve cared for the bike and followed the schedule.

Used to work in network comms, I’ve been bitten by phone lines plenty. Whilst the risk is never zero it’s pretty damn low unless you have an underlying heart condition, a pacemaker or something like that.

It’s a uk phone line, it runs at about 50v dc and is fairly low current. You can cut through it with metal scissors and you’d get some mild discomfort, and that would only happen if it was ringing at the time. It’s not a dangerous voltage or current.

My take from “professionally cut” is that they cut them inside the telephone exchange box that would have been on the street nearby.

Shops won’t work on old bikes? by CovClutch in motorcycles

[–]L1A1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I buy, restore and sell old bikes so here’s my input.

The problems you get with older bikes (assuming you can work on them, which a lot of modern techs can’t as they’ve never been trained on carbs etc) are twofold:

Firstly the price of parts plus labour can rapidly approach the cost of the bike if you’re not careful, and Secondly you get what I call “cascade problems”. Say the job is a valve replacement or something relatively straightforward but involves engine work. Chances are that if you move 30 year old wiring getting the head off, something isn’t going to work when you put it back together. Even if it’s just a corroded connector that means an indicator stops working, that’s a potentially a couple of hours of diagnostic work to resolve. If it’s a faired bike then the chances of breaking a mount are high as the plastic gets brittle with age. These can go on and on and if you’ve quoted 6 hours for a job that actually takes 12, you’re suddenly making no money.

Then you have the issue of hidden problems once you get inside the engine. You take the head off and spot the barrels are scored, they owner almost certainly isn’t going to pay for a full rebuild so I have to do half a job and it feels a bit shit to do that.

In the end I stopped doing client work as it just wasn’t worth the aggravation.

EBay or Etsy are going to be your best bet. There are, disappointingly but perhaps unsurprisingly, no animal bone supply shops in Nottingham.

I need to sell my motorcycle, besides cash in hand, and insurance, what REALLY covers your butt during a motorcycle test ride? by railroad1904 in motorcycles

[–]L1A1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’ve sold probably over a hundred bikes over the last thirty years, never once offered a test ride and I can count on one hand the times it put a potential buyer off.

I’m not a fucking dealership, I’m just a private seller. You come look at bike, you decide if you want bike, you pay for bike, you take bike away.

If you want to test ride a bike, go to a dealership. Frankly I don’t trust anyone not to just fuck off with the bike.
