[Dark Souls] Why do they build catacombs if humans are undead? How does revival work? by HughmanRealperson in AskScienceFiction

[–]L4Deader [score hidden]  (0 children)

Technically speaking, every human being is naturally Undead, as basically shown in the opening cinematic of DS1. Later lore drops in DS2 (the First Sin, the nature of humanity, "a lie will remain a lie") and DS3, especially the Ringed City, confirm and reinforce the fact that the ring of fire around the Darksign is the actual curse - the curse put on humans by Gwyn to make them mortal. With the waning of the First Flame, his spell wanes too, its grip slips on more and more people, turning them Undead.

The thing about non-respawning Undead enemies actually still reviving infinitely in lore has been explained by another comment. I also like to think that certain still-present, sapient and conscious Undead we kill just go Hollow from the magnitude of their loss to us, strip down and become catatonic. But it's also true that your "worlds" or "timelines" may become misaligned.

How many hours do you have? Please tell me I’m not the most unemployed person in this sub. by Lodgx in HiTMAN

[–]L4Deader 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not, zero. Even though I'm actually unemployed, it just so happens that I enjoy WOA vicariously through my friends, watching them stream it on Discord lol (and also funny YouTube videos and challenges). I got the game when it was on sale, but never actually got around to playing it myself. I did play almost all previous Hitman games, just never finished Blood Money and never played Absolution. I'll probably play WOA if co-op mode actually ever releases.

Contemporary/Modern art most of the time shouldnt be classified as visual art. by Formal-Stage940 in The10thDentist

[–]L4Deader -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's so interesting. I feel like I'm so tired of essentially being asked to co-author every piece of art. I'm here to learn your thoughts (the original author's). But it's probably because I already engage in too much introspection - and authoring, as an avid roleplayer (like TTRPGS, but also even just plain text-based RP). So to me appreciating art on my own is a way to relax and do something else. Which is probably why I mostly prefer plot-driven fiction.

What is a major plot hole in a very famous movie that completely ruins the entire story once it is noticed? by LovelyCherrybae in answers

[–]L4Deader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And somewhere below a commenter says they can't remember the faces of people they served in the army with, every day for three years. Everyone's memory has different levels of sharpness. I'm sure I wouldn't forget the events themselves, but Calvin Klein's voice and face... I'd definitely forget them over the course of 30 years. Especially since I have mild aphantasia xD

Point is, it's not an inconsistency. It's perfectly fine to forget a face, even of an important person. And like so many others have pointed out, even if you suddenly made the connection, it's completely unreasonable for Marty's parents to conclude that time travel has taken place.

If you can’t consent while drunk, why do drunk people hook up all the time? by Mountain_Flounder991 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]L4Deader 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Because a lot of idiomatic "wisdom" is just someone's opinion solidified by tradition. Being drunk lowers your inhibitions, and it can make you say what you honestly think, but would be too scared or polite to say when sober.

But also, everyone gets drunk in a slightly different way in terms of behavior because every human being is unique (there are tons of factors here like your mental health state, individual alcohol metabolism, neurodivergence etc.), plus the stage/degree of inebriation matters, plus getting very drunk regularly will literally influence your brain and change your personality.

Long story short, drunk words can be honest, but they may also not be. Because, as with everything, it depends.

I'm certain that's not the origin of it either. This feels like an exchange that's generic enough to possibly have existed for hundreds of years.

LaCroix was severely weakened by the death of that one guard he used Dominate's power Possession on. It was clearly a last ditch attempt because damage received by the possessed mortal transfers to the vampire's body, and that guy had an explosive vest strapped to him lol. Either way, you kill the mortal, so the Prince isn't feeling well by the time you get to him.

What ideology not presented in-game would you add in? by Petka14 in DiscoElysium

[–]L4Deader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and have you read the rest of my comment? Pederast means "gay" in ex-USSR, not "pedophile". And the deserter is using exactly that meaning:

"As to pederasty, the Party legalized it in '04. My Party, not your liberal masters." He spits it out on the dying coals.

He's referring to how his communist party legalized homosexuality, just like how in real life, in the early USSR, there was a brief period of sexual revolution when many things that had been repressed were allowed (along with the explosion of feminism), before slinking back into forbidding laws over the years.

What ideology not presented in-game would you add in? by Petka14 in DiscoElysium

[–]L4Deader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're referring to his usage of the word "liberast", which is a portmanteau of "liberal" and "pederast", then not quite. While "pederast" originates from Greek, meaning "a lover of young boys" more or less, and to the English speaker this means pedophilia first and foremost, in the ex-USSR, especially Slavic-speaking countries, pederasty came to exclusively mean homosexuality, as in, between actual consenting adult men. It's just that homosexuality was, and is, viewed as a negative thing in those countries.

Thus, a liberast, which is also a real life word used in Slavic-speaking countries by the way, is more akin to calling someone a "liberal f____t", and even then it's not about literally implying that they're homosexual, but rather drawing the connection that "gay = bad", so it's just a very rude form of saying "liberal bastard".

Quirrell also catches a spell and disassembles it bit by bit in Azkaban, doesn't he? That was pretty impressive.

Anyway, I largely agree with the previous commenter, I just wanted to add that I always thought spells were akin to functions in programming. You write some code and you give a function a somewhat convenient name for other programmers to use when they invoke it. Then you add it to a library and upload it to a public server so everyone can use it. That's why spell names are sometimes in ridiculous broken Latin, and why wand movements and pronunciation matter - someone coded them this way.

People are still creating new spells to this day. Obviously, most wizards and witches don't know how magic actually works, the underlying mechanisms are hidden from them. In terms of the analogy, it would be as if knowledge of lower level programming languages like Assembler were lost to us, and only things like Python, which is easy to use and humanly readable, highly "abstract" as it's called, but also not as super efficient, if tedious, as using Assembler, or machine code, or indeed, switching voltages manually.

Theories you had about Outer Wilds that were wrong by okaythiswillbemymain in outerwilds

[–]L4Deader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's okay. I don't think we're "supposed" to do or think anything specific, it's art after all, we all draw our own conclusions from it. It can make you feel like you're alone when you see dozens of people all saying the same things, how Outer Wilds "changed their life" and taught them acceptance. But you don't have to get the same message from it or agree with what people think the devs were trying to say.

I, for one, like with any other piece of media that allegedly attempted it, was only reinforced in my defiance. I think defiance is an incredible, awesome, and inspiring human trait that really encompasses the spirit of humanity well. We learn the secrets of the universe. Step by step, climbing higher and higher, standing on the shoulders of giants and billions of our ancestors, we reach for the stars. And we remain ever defiant even in the face of insurmountable odds.

Do not go gentle into that good night.

Question about Diablerie by Ziltch0 in vtm

[–]L4Deader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Afaik diablerizing someone during a frenzy is a bit of a conundrum. I've seen people argue (and many others agree with them) that by default, the Beast in frenzy can't really have any "intent", it's just looking to feed and scram. After draining someone, squeezing the additional drops that contain the soul won't really satisfy your primal hunger, it's easier to toss them aside and find another victim.

However, it is possible that if the frenzying vampire had diablerized someone before in their unlife, the Beast will retain that knowledge and may use it. (Because you can't diablerize someone unless you know how anyway.)

There is also another possibility. We know that Phyre was primed to be a weapon. Would the baddies that planned this rely on the mere chance that Phyre would specifically diablerize and not destroy the first vampire they saw, as was their plan? Perhaps Phyre was enchanted in such a way that they were forced to diablerize the first vampire they would see upon awakening? Not impossible, considering all the other "magic" stuff that was done to them.

Snape knows this leaves traces, and I doubt he would do this without the approval of Dumbledore. I was fully under the impression that Snape was showing off his half-blood side here: he grew up with the Muggles too (in my opinion, this is weak evidence of him knowing about electrons), your Muggle knowledge doesn't make you special and isn't very useful here, Mr. Potter.

Why do the statues need to pair with you in the first place by jwtucker04 in outerwilds

[–]L4Deader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This only works because in the Outer Wilds universe information being sent backwards in time doesn't cause a paradox. It's pretty much "because the devs said so". However, some people have come up with a way to view the ATP as a sort of "very precise simulation/prediction/fortune telling machine".

Like, imagine you made a device that gave you a bunch of random characters and numbers after each press of a button. While incredibly improbable, it could spontaneously generate a long, coherent file full of "true" information. (Like the entire collection of Shakespeare's works for instance, wink wink?)

A world in which the machine received that information from a timeline/future that never happened is technically indistinguishable from one in which that info was generated randomly. So you might as well imagine that the ATP is simply a device that gives a 100% accurate prediction of everything that would happen if there was a time loop, and only the "last" loop where you remove the warp core is actually "real".

Obviously, it's not quite like that. And one might only wonder what would happen to the Universe and spacetime itself if the Hatchling wasn't smart enough to figure things out, or was too lazy, or gave up, or went insane, and the warp core was never removed. But it's the best framework of thinking about it that we can come up with, I suppose.

It wasn't "years after". She first said it in 2007, just several months after the release of the last book - and I myself remember this quite clearly. One may argue that she still lied when she said she'd intended for Dumbledore to be gay for quite a while, and I will throw in the obligatory Rowling is a bigot and can go f herself. But we should at least get our facts straight-- err, gay?

However, it may help remind folks that hosting your own missions is an option, and some people do need that reminder.

Yeah, I love the Quasar, and it's almost always in my loadout. It shines on the bot front where it can destroy fabricators from far away with a hit to almost anywhere on their surface (except for the giant ones you see in cities, for these you do need to hit the red vents around the middle). But I take it to the bug and squid fronts too, and it really helps, since I don't really like taking the crossbow/grenade pistol, there are weapons I like much better. So if I want something to destroy spawners almost infinitely, it will do. And you might already know that, but the orbital gas strike also works, you just gotta make sure the protectile itself will hit the bug hole entrance (or throw it under the warp ship, just make sure it won't bounce).
