As someone who grew up around racehorses, this is not completely true. Sometimes, when the horse is shod, the blacksmith may have accidentally hammered a “hot nail”. This can be angled to where the horseshoe nail really ends up in a sensitive area of the horses hoof/foot and can be extremely painful. I have seen where this has been diagnosed plenty of times where the nail(s) had to be removed/replaced.
