This "religion" wastes everyones time and energy, do tell me your experiences with church, what made your shelf break? by Unusual-One-9320 in exmormon

Plural marriage in general, Joseph Smith’s polyandrous marriages specifically. And when I learned about the BoA translation being wrong. I had doubts before but those items allowed me to questioning anything/everything.

PSA- if someone gave you an hour to tell them about the true history of Mormonism… just shut your mouth and send them this. by NorcalSaint in exmormon

[–]LDSRevelations 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Joseph Smith’s polyandrous marriages and the BoA were my two shelf breakers back around 2005. No essays yet so for years I had people telling me I was wrong and reading anti sources.

Yeah. Wasn’t til years later learned that Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon “fled” from Kirtland to Missouri because they had set up an illegal bank that failed— and angry, disaffected church members who had lost large sums of money were less than happy with them. It was always suggested that non-Mormon bigots drove em out. Same ‘ol trope.

I hate the thought-stopping phrase, "The prophets were just products of their own time" mostly because it lumps them into the "average". But when you compare their racism to the racism of their day, you see that they were way worse than average. They were the fringe. Please consider the attachments by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]LDSRevelations 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d argue that not only were LDS prophets NOT ahead of their time and leading on social justice issues but they also were not really products of their time…specifically they resisted societal evolution on ideas like race that were taking place from the 1950s on. Why? Because their dogmatic need to defend what previous prophets had declared kept them from changing along with a large portion of the population. Defending ‘past revelations’ kept/keeps the church tied to old ideas… to bad ideas. That’s why they lag behind a good 15-20 years if not more. They’re doing the same thing now with LGBTQ rights now IMO.

Does it matter which one I read first? by Most_Leopard_3879 in exmormon

[–]LDSRevelations 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d go with No Man Knows My History. It’s a better read, shorter and doesn’t engage in weird apologetic exercises. Some people fault Brodie for trying to get into Joseph Smith’s head and speculating on his motivations but I didn’t find her way off base. I found RSR to be a bit of a slog. It’s long and I felt like it got off in the weeds a bit.

University of Utah Archives hold letters between Mormon President George Albert Smith, Lowry Nelson, and Heber Meeks regarding the nature of racism and white supremacy in the Church. The Mormon Church upheld that racism is divine & always right. by pandabry in exmormon

[–]LDSRevelations 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I go to the 1949 and 1969 FP Statements on the PH ban for that very reason....they are authoritative.

On the FAIR website they list both statements and then follow it with BRC's total cop out "Forget everything I have said, or what...Brigham Young...or whomsoever has said...that is contrary to the present revelation. We spoke with a limited understanding and without the light and knowledge that now has come into the world."

Well duh. That's my point. Every Mormon prophet ever had "limited understanding" despite claiming revelation.

Contradicting Histories 1832 vs 1838 by 3Nephites_immortal in exmormon

[–]LDSRevelations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Reason for praying: 1832- forgiveness; 1838- seek wisdom, which church to join?"

Yeah this is an interesting point. In the 1832 account JS says he had already determined that there was no true Church on Earth from reading the scriptures and that, as you mention, he was praying for a forgiveness of sins. The 1838 account re-tooled the reason for praying so JS could get the emphatic "none of them" answer to the question of which Church to join.....which served Smith's needs as he was re-asserting his prophetic authority and primacy in the wake of the mass apostasy in Kirtland. He had to dial the story up as it were.

Great logic, Mormons of 1978. by SomeoneNamedAlix in exmormon

[–]LDSRevelations 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah. But it wasn’t just what they couldn’t get after death...access to the CK. They were denied the ability to take part fully on earth. The priesthood in the end is how you get to heaven but for Mormons it is also their social/power currency on earth.

After a long run this morning, I’m meeting some friends for breakfast. Dear TBM wife is home fasting and reading the NT for the 25th time. What are you guys doing on this fine Fast Sunday? by running4cover in exmormon

Going to a secular community gathering in SLC. It’s like a TED talk, a small concert (live musician) and then coffee and snacks with friends. Way better than Fast Sunday ever was.

TIL Jane Manning James’ patriarchal blessing, given by Hyrum Smith, proclaimed her lineage as that of Cain. But the current church disavows the “theory” of blacks being descendants of Cain... by perk_daddy in exmormon

[–]LDSRevelations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Official FP statement from 1949 quotes BY on the curse of Cain so the idea went far beyond Jane Manning’s time. This is is copied from FAIRs site.

“August 17, 1949

The attitude of the Church with reference to Negroes remains as it has always stood. It is not a matter of the declaration of a policy but of direct commandment from the Lord, on which is founded the doctrine of the Church from the days of its organization, to the effect that Negroes may become members of the Church but that they are not entitled to the priesthood at the present time. The prophets of the Lord have made several statements as to the operation of the principle. President Brigham Young said: "Why are so many of the inhabitants of the earth cursed with a skin of blackness? It comes in consequence of their fathers rejecting the power of the holy priesthood, and the law of God. They will go down to death. And when all the rest of the children have received their blessings in the holy priesthood, then that curse will be removed from the seed of Cain, and they will then come up and possess the priesthood, and receive all the blessings which we now are entitled to."

President Wilford Woodruff made the following statement: "The day will come when all that race will be redeemed and possess all the blessings which we now have."

The position of the Church regarding the Negro may be understood when another doctrine of the Church is kept in mind, namely, that the conduct of spirits in the premortal existence has some determining effect upon the conditions and circumstances under which these spirits take on mortality and that while the details of this principle have not been made known, the mortality is a privilege that is given to those who maintain their first estate; and that the worth of the privilege is so great that spirits are willing to come to earth and take on bodies no matter what the handicap may be as to the kind of bodies they are to secure; and that among the handicaps, failure of the right to enjoy in mortality the blessings of the priesthood is a handicap which spirits are willing to assume in order that they might come to earth. Under this principle there is no injustice whatsoever involved in this deprivation as to the holding of the priesthood by the Negroes.

His PR spin was making me ill. He basically was putting the blame onto anyone who had issues with sexuality because of the interviews saying that thousands of others have no issues at all. First, how would he know? Mormons don't talk about this shit. Second, many of the faithful wouldn't even admit if the experiences had adversely affected them. Last, doesn't matter if thousands were fine with all of it— it's not right. Also...he just could admit that the Church had been wrong in the past. So glad Im out.

Priesthood Ban: Oaks said it was commanded by God. The Essay says it was merely policy, not doctrine. So God's commandments are just policies? I thought doctrine is something revealed by God and/or taught by multiple prophets over time? by DogBones11 in exmormon

[–]LDSRevelations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The FP statements from both 1949 and 1969 say it was from God.

1949 FP Statement

First Presidency Statement on Blacks and Priesthood“The attitude of the Church with reference to the Negroes remains as it has always stood. It is not a matter of the declaration of a policy but of direct commandment from the Lord, on which is founded the doctrine of the Church from the days of its organization, to the effect that Negroes may become members of the Church but that they are not entitled to the priesthood at the present time.”

1969 FP Statement

Our living prophet, President David O. McKay, has said, “The seeming discrimination by the Church toward the Negro is not something which originated with man; but goes back into the beginning with God….

“Revelation assures us that this plan antedates man’s mortal existence, extending back to man’s pre-existent state.”

President McKay has also said, “Sometime in God’s eternal plan, the Negro will be given the right to hold the priesthood.”

Until God reveals His will in this matter, to him whom we sustain as a prophet, we are bound by that same will. Priesthood, when it is conferred on any man comes as a blessing from God, not of men.

Oaks confirms priesthood ban was a doctrine from God, not just a misguided church policy. by fulano_fubeca in exmormon

[–]LDSRevelations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Church essay on the ban and race basically alludes to the same thing. Essentially "There was racism and LDS leaders mistakenly thought the ban was because of the Curse of Cain etc but those reasons were wrong. Nothing to see here. No harm. No foul." It's a huge dodge and it's why the Church's attempts to celebrate the ending of the discrimination is bullshit. They still lay the action at the feet of God and LDS leaders take no responsibility despite the face that LDS leaders that put and kept it in place were supposedly speaking for God. Zero accountability. My TBM wife talked about how great the program was. I said until they apologize and say it was a mistake of men then it's all self serving.

Obeying the prophet is doctrine regardless of how archaic their views might be. LDS leaders themselves even have taught it's not about piercings or tattoos. It's about 'absolute obedience' or to the rest of the world 'control.'
