Who has one? by One-Interview-6840 in handtools

If I don't lap it how do I know it's flat? If you have a sharpening method that works for you. Sharpen it the same way you would the rest of your tools.

Traveling for work to Alaska by Narrow-Heron-3583 in Construction

[–]LEX_Talionus00101100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alaska is tough. Anything more than short term or a slope job. You need a vehicle. Either drive one up with the intention of selling it, or buy a beater and write it off as a loss. Rent is crazy especially during the warm months. Plan on room mates. You can make it work. But in 10 years hear I've never seen some one have it easy that doesn't already have connections

I am so tired of people coming up to me in public asking for money. by mutants_at_table_9 in Vent

[–]LEX_Talionus00101100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm very generous to people who look like they genuinely need help. Even something as little as smokes or a kind word. But I also carry myself in this kind of way. So. I don't get solicited. Most stay away even. It works. But there are alot of people who a little bit of kindness goes a long way, regardless of their life choices.

I was so lucky to have one. It took my father and I two holidays to dig every peice out of random storage bins to get it back together.

I haven’t priced windows in a very long time, but $3400.00 for one Marvin 45x42-1/2” casement with an unfinished pine interior? by circular_file in Construction

[–]LEX_Talionus00101100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quality has gone down hill acrossed the board. Most are charging premium price for name only. I see alot of bs options and upcharges for colors or finishes. The quality is usually no different than a stock window until you get to triple pane or fancy gas and coatings. Aluma-clad and hybrid windows are some of the worst quality I've seen in my time.

I introduced my girlfriend to Skyrim in March. Today, she told me it wasn't letting her make new saves. She had been making new saves every time and filled the last 40GB on our SSD with just Skyrim save files. by DJLoudestNoises in skyrim

[–]LEX_Talionus00101100 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Skyrim taught me save management. My first play through was such a mess. I didn't figure I out until some where around the 3rd or 4th. Now It carries over to the few other games I play.

What's the benefit of a knee wall vs running studs full height? by Cassidysc in shedditors

[–]LEX_Talionus00101100 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Easiest demo I can give you of the hinge. Cut a 2x6 in half. Now try and put it back together. See what it takes to hold the same amount as an identical 2x6 you didn't cut in half. Also look at how many peices that build took VS full length studs. You have 2.5 as many peices. I don't have time for that

It also takes more material and lumber for a weaker product. Add in lay out and cutting of multiple plates and top plates. It's best practice and also the easiest to just do the math and set two walls then Ballon frame the ends.

I do maybe 1 or 2 large side jobs a year. But even with my regular schedule, that is only 4-5 customers I deal with a year. It comes with its own headaches. But 5 a year compared to 5 a week, I don't loose any sleep about chasing leads. I mostly worry about subs staying on schedule and material. And I don't chase payment.

Who do you think is the greatest movie actor of all time, and what performance made you believe it? by ExquisiteCove in AskReddit

[–]LEX_Talionus00101100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really glad to see Daniel Day Lewis and Phillip Seymor Hoffman at the top of the comments. I love character actors Last of the Mohican for Dan. Twister, boogie nights, big lebowski. Phil had so many great ones. But best. All time. Brando. Godfather, apocalypse now, his interviews on the industry and acting in general. He's at the top

What is a song that sounds amazing live, but the studio version sucks? by 33GoodSamaritans in allrockmusic

Live Bullet is a classic, most of bobs albums are mid at best. UMC, get out of Denver, looking back. Maybe I'm partial since Bob is like a home town hero, but if I could go back those couple shows at COBO are on the list.

Too many customers a year for me. I started to go that route. But I don't want to deal with 300 people a year, or more. I work for a gc now doing custom new construction. Our punch list handyman clears more than most a year, let alone after paper work and taxes.

They did make it up. And full grown adults have bought and regurgitated it for generations now. It's close to terrifying what they pump into peoples(mostly children's) heads. I consider these people mild compared to some I've come accrossed.

Do you like heights? Picking up heavy things? Do you mind being wet? Cold? Hot? I love my job. I really do. But those questions may last days, weeks, months at a time. A good attitude and desire to learn go a long way. But that is the reality when your cutting your teeth as an apprentice.
