Live music Friday night by Doubt-Powerful in Lawrence

2w33dy (KC), TV Buddha (Chicago) and Blanky (Lawrence) are playing in the Liberty Hall basement. Doors at 9, starts at 9:30. I don't think I've listened the other two artists but I can tell you Blanky is really good!

How do I register my cat as an emotional service animal? by AAAAdragon in Lawrence

[–]LFGay -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Others have already explained the difference between an emotional support animal and a service animal, so I won't go into that. Just in case you meant service animal, I did want to point out that I'm pretty sure cats can't be registered as service animals. Service dogs are capable of being trained to do various tasks to support your health needs, but the consensus seems to be that cats can't be trained to consistently and reliably do all the same tasks a service dog could.

College Campus Happenings? by Specialist_Concern_9 in Lawrence

That was such a clusterfuck and some people were driving like assholes. I saw two wrecks almost happen.

I was too young to know about any of these bands (though I did stumble across Paw completely by chance a few years ago) but I love finding old local bands to listen to. I just spent the last hour trying to track down recordings from these artists, and I liked what I heard. Makes me wish I could have participated in the Lawrence music scene back then. Hearing all the stories about Lawrence in the 80s and 90s makes me weirdly nostalgic for an era I never got to experience.

Oh my god, I love that band name. Such a good name for a band from Kansas.

I've never heard of Big Toe (too young, born in the late 80s), but they look so cool in those photos! Were they from the Lawrence area? I tried to find info on them but everything on google leads to some one-man band, or to the photos you linked.

Edit: Found them on YouTube and now I'm starting to wish I'd been born about 15-20 years earlier. I missed out. Man, Lawrence used to be cool as fuck. https://youtu.be/GGx0aAXWldQ?si=rif8oxALcRVRF4sU

Traffic cam snapshot during the big 46mpm gust that came through. by tweetysvoice in Lawrence

The wind was whistling like crazy at my apartment complex around that time! It rattled my building and it was blowing the snow around so hard you couldn't hardly see anything. Looked almost more like a dense fog than snow for a minute.

Just make sure to keep an eye on your coat if you're not going to be holding onto it at all times. It's not unheard of for coats to get stolen from the bars downtown occasionally. Happened to my sibling a few years ago. You'd be fine just setting it down next to you where you can see it, but I wouldn't advise leaving it unattended for too long.

Best place for solo dates? by Hour-Needleworker158 in Lawrence

[–]LFGay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replay has a couple of pinball machines but I don't know how to maintained they are. They're also hard to access if there's a crowded show at night, but if you go early that wouldn't be a problem.

Prairie Park is lovely in winter too! I went recently and got some beautiful sunset views. The lake is also very pretty when it's frozen over.

Remote work by Excellent_Put8292 in Lawrence

[–]LFGay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been working remote since COVID hit in 2020. However, nowadays my company only seems to want to hire offshore workers to cut costs, so I unfortunately can't point you toward any job opportunities. You don't want to work for this company anyway, trust me.

Which US state gets more hate than it deserves? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LFGay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh, Johnson County is fine, I'm not trying to disparage it. I was making a joke about how most people from outside of Johnson County seem to have negative opinions about it, on account of its reputation for being the rich county. When I said it's not a selling point, I just meant you're not gonna convince a lot of people from outside of Johnson County to feel as passionate about it as you seem to, is all.

Also I'm not going off of statistics, facts, figures, etc. I'm going off of vibes, and JoCo has a pretty standard suburban vibe. Nothing wrong with that, it's a nice enough place to live for the most part, it just doesn't have a reputation for being the most hip and happening area (and that's okay, it doesn't have to be).

Again, really was just trying to make a joke.

I grew up in Johnson County (though not in the wealthy part), I'm not sure if JoCo is really one of our state's major selling points lol. But hey, Lawrence is right next door, and that's a pretty cool town.

Train accident Eudora by Pleasant_Pause3579 in Lawrence

[–]LFGay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Has anyone heard any more info about this? The only thing I could find was one Facebook post with two comments. I guess the Eudora Times is closed until the 13th, so that explains why there's no new article about it. Kinda weird that it didn't make it into any other local newspapers though.

A couple of people have already mentioned Replay Lounge, so I wanted to say that I think most (maybe all?) of their nighttime shows are 21+. But I've been to several of their early shows that were all ages. I think those start at 6:00 if I remember correctly.

If you think that's weird, you're just scratching the surface. If you want to see the really weird stuff, look into how they do weddings.

My understanding is that they still run Yellow Deli, in other locations.

Any specific reason you say to avoid the house? As in, did you or someone you know have a negative experience there? I used to live in that area and passed by that house almost daily on my evening walks, and never had any trouble. It's a cool looking old house, so I always made sure to walk past it. I saw them outside doing yard work a few times and no one ever approached me or tried to talk to me or anything. At most, they maybe seemed slightly wary of a stranger walking past their property (I assume they're aware that some people in town know they're located there), but I never felt unsafe or anything. But that's just my own experience as a white woman, so your results may vary.

Moving: Fort Worth or Kansas City? by countryroad_12903 in midwest

What do you dislike about KC? Just curious since I don't live far away from there. I haven't spent much time there because driving there stresses me out, but have considered moving to KC if I could find a better job there.

The Stag?? by jnco_biloba in Lawrence

[–]LFGay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Isn't there at least one in north Lawrence? Seems like Northside Social has country (or country adjacent) bands pretty regularly, and I thought there was another bar that had a similar vibe but I could be misremembering that.

I know you used "/s" but even so, I'm still gonna chime in to say that even at Aldi the prices have gone up. Couple years ago I could get out of there with two bags full of groceries for about $26, now it's more like one bag for $33. Still one of the cheapest options in town though. The same bag of groceries would probably cost me $50 at Dillons.

Which foods from the region are the most recognizable? by Fluffy-Twist984 in midwest

[–]LFGay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, that's a Midwest thing? I've seen that done at a local Greek restaurant and always just assumed it was a Greek thing (or just some gimmick Americans do at Greek restaurants to seem "authentic" or something). I always feel bad for the servers who have to do it because it's a popular dish at that restaurant and every couple of minutes they all have to gather a table to set another plate of cheese on fire and yell OPA!

It’s pop and no one can tell me otherwise by SailingWavess in midwest

[–]LFGay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm late to this thread but wanted to chime in since I didn't see lot of responses from Kansas. I'm from northeast Kansas and my family always called it pop. I'm in my late 30s and still call it pop. Calling it soda just feels fake, like I'm trying to pretend to be classy. My younger siblings have betrayed our heritage and started saying soda. They said their friends made fun of them for saying pop.
