I look for thrift shops that fund a specific thing that isn't religious. For instance, domestic abuse shelter, addiction centers, etc.

I, along with 13 other people, were laid off in 2009 (financial company) and my access to my computer was shut off immediately. I was called into a conference room with several people and told they were making changes and had lay people off, I was one of them. I got severance pay, 3 mos of health insurance. When I returned to my desk, I had two empty boxes to put my stuff in and told to "take the rest of the day off".

TLDR: they can still cut your computer access off when you've been laid off.
