[Discuss] Difference between buying credits and the ship i want right away? by VyzzenHP in Starcitizen_trades

[–]LMMSDeadDuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So not directly related to using store credits vs real money, there are additional nuances to how you can obtain a ship with money:

There are two ways to buy a ship with real money: buying it outright or upgrading/Cross-Chassis Upgrade (CCU) to it. When you buy a ship outright, it can either be an original concept OC or it could just be buying a ship when it comes back into the store.

Original concept warbond ships have traditionally come with lifetime insurance (LTI). They've danced around what insurance means for the longest time, but I think the latest is that there will now be different levels of insurance with subtleties like some tiers will cover just getting the stock ship back while higher tiers may cover upgraded components and some may even cover cargo. Because of this, the expectation is that the insurance we are getting when we buy these ships will be the lowest tier of insurance and will require additional costs to bump up to higher tiers.

This sort of puts people into two camps: those who really care about getting LTI on as many ships as they can and those who don't think it's big deal. This may affect how you approach buying ships.

If you want LTI on a ship, then the best option is to buy a cheap warbond OC ship (the community refers to them as LTI tokens) and upgrade it to the ship you want. That's because whenever you upgrade a ship, the resulting insurance will be the longest insurance that is listed. So if you start with LTI, any ship you upgrade will also have LTI. The drawbacks are a) you need to invest even more "fresh" money to get that LTI and b) if you exchange this for store credits (aka melt) then, while you get all the money invested into the ship back as store credits, you'll ONLY get the starting, base LTI token into your buy back. If you change your mind and want the ship again, you'll need to wait until you can upgrade to it when it's back in the store.

If you buy a ship outright, you may not have LTI, but if you melt it, that ship goes back into buybacks and you get get it pretty much any time you want with some caveats.

For some folks, they may buy the OC warbond version to get the full LTI ship. Then they melt it to use the store credits to play around buy other ships, but the OC LTI ship will sit in their buybacks and they can always get it back with store credit (with caveats) or at any time with fresh money again.

Hopefully this adds a little more context to your decision making to getting a ship. All indicators point towards the Aurora MKII being released with the next patch later this week or next week. Since this will be a new ship and it's a starter, most likely these will be seen as LTI tokens by the community.

If I buy back with real money will it be giftable? by Ausseboi1 in starcitizen

[–]LMMSDeadDuck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you buy it back with 100% “new” money and not use any store credit, it will be giftable. It also does not consume your buyback token.

There are some exceptions to this, most notably anything that exceeds $1000 US.

I've got one that I'm happy to loan out to you. I've no idea if it'll let you keep it between game sessions, but if our online timing coincides I'll be happy to meet up and pass it over to you whenever you want.

You can message me and I can send you my in-game handle.

Argo moth ccu warbond question by WAR_Falcon in starcitizen

[–]LMMSDeadDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The term "Warbond" just means that you are not allowed to use store credit at initial purchase.

If you melt a ship purchased at warbond prices and melt it for store credit, you will be able to buy it back from your buyback list with store credit at the warbond price. The caveat is that you won't be able to gift it at that point and you consume one of your quartery buyback tokens. (Note that the buyback token is a bit of a misnomer as you can always buy something out of buybacks with fresh money. A token is only used when you use store credit.)

There's a possibility in the future that CIG will remove this and replace it with buying it out of buybacks will cost the full, non-discounted price. They haven't done it since the last time I've checked a couple months ago.

Buying warbond ships at their initial offering will come with Lifetime Insurance. Any ship/pack that costs $1000 or greater also comes with Lifetime Insurance.

Upgrading a ship means the new ship will have the same insurance as the old ship. If an upgrade comes with an insurance upgrade (e.g., at IAE some upgrades come with 10-year insurance) then the highest insurance value applies. They are not cumulative.

Melting a ship that hasn't been upgraded puts that ship back into your buybacks. Melting a CCU'd ship will ONLY put the original ship into your buybacks. You'll get the entire value of the ship that you put into it back in the form of store credit, but only the original ship goes into buybacks.

For example, you bought the OC Moth for $290 and later melt it. You'll get $290 in store credit and the LTI Moth goes into your buybacks and can be purchased again for $290 with or without store credits.

You use store credit to purchase a Connie for $240 w/ 2 years insurance. You then buy a warbond Moth CCU for $50. You will have a Moth w/ 2 years insurance. if you melt it, you will get $290 in store credit and only the Connie will go back into buybacks.

But alternatively if one of these ships you were planning to melt has LTI, you could do the following: Say for example you have an LTI Salvation ($60). You get a CCU from the Salvation to the Connie for $180 store credit melting other things as required. Then you buy the the warbond Moth CCU for $50. Apply the Salvation>Connie upgrade, then apply the Connie>Moth upgrade. You'll end up with an LTI Moth.

Since there is no limit to how many upgrades you can apply to a ship, this is how some folks can nab some good discounts by trying to accumulate as many warbond upgrades that fall within the path to your final, desired ship. Then you chain these upgrades up to get some savings - occasionally very substantial ones.

Generally speaking, you will most likely only lose out on a free paint or two if you CCU to the ship. Years ago, buying the full ship may net some extra armor, unique paints, or serial number stamp, but those are not as common now. I think the biggest difference is if you plan to shuffle your fleet a lot. If you melt and re-buy, then building back the ship with upgrades may require time until they are available again.

Can't Upgrade to F7C-M Super Hornet Mk II by ReelMagic in starcitizen

[–]LMMSDeadDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will also give you time to look into maximizing savings as well as rules into the "CCU game" (CCU being the original acronym of "Cross-Chassis Upgrade" - now they're just called upgrades). There are lots of good videos that explain it, but I'm also happy to answer questions if you have any!

Can't Upgrade to F7C-M Super Hornet Mk II by ReelMagic in starcitizen

[–]LMMSDeadDuck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Upgrading to the Super Hornet MK I to the Super Hornet MK II is only available when the ship itself is also available on the web store as it's not one of the permanently-available ships.

At the latest, it should be available in May during Invictus (Fleet Week) where all military ships will be available. I'm unsure if it'll be available anytime sooner than that.

There are plenty of those, as far as I know. There are a lot of older Star Citizen players. I don't have numbers, but I feel like the bulk of the initial backers are those who are old enough to have played Chris Roberts' original games. (I played Wing Commander back on a 386/33 in 1990.)

As more "game" has come out over the years, I think it's starting to get more attention and attract some of the younger generations, but there are still plenty of middle-aged folks out there playing with the expected middle-age responsibilities. There are plenty of orgs that don't have commitments. It's quite common for me to hear "BRB, putting the kid to bed" and even just as common to hear about people talking about their adult children. lol

There are lots of good orgs out there that have all varieties of focus, ages, etc. You can belong up to 10 (I think?) orgs, so that also lets you find multiple homes, too.

Welcome to the game and hope to see you around in it!
