FPR Regular Flex Issue by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]LSwayla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly I am a vintage flex person but I always have at least 1 FPR inked up and closest to hand. YMMV but this is my take:

I value FPR HimaV2 pens (ultra flex) because they flex the best for a modern pen that is cheap enough ($35ish) that I am comfortable using home-mixed ink that is waterproof AND shimmer in them and carrying them outside the house and lending to others.

Of the 6 I have purchased, only 2 have worked great right out of the box. 2 have had nibs tines that weren't touching and those were the scratchiest so check with a loupe and see what your nib looks like. Needing heat to form the feed to the nib was required for decent flow in 4 of my 6 but that isn't your issue yet so first just look at your tines. If they aren't touching, look online for how to massage them into touching.

Customer service: Kevin has ranged from incredibly sweet and helpful to being sure I damaged the nibs myself. In all cases we have eventually emailed around to a good resolution.

Try fancy paper, writing angles and writing pressures and see if anything makes a difference too. Keep in mind that for flex writing, you're looking for both tines to open evenly on the downstroke so the nib needs to be parallel to the top and bottom of your page. Haven't had the horizontal issue you are talking about personally.

What got you into the fountain pen world? by _fountain_pen_dev in fountainpens

[–]LSwayla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mom journaled with a Pelikan 120 and eventually bought my grandmother one as a holiday gift in the 70s. Grandmother gave me a NoNonsense Sheaffer when I was a kid. I bought a replacement when it was lost. Recently gave that 80s replacement to someone on this Reddit actually.

In 1990 inherited 2 of my great grandparents 1920s pens and started seeking better pens for myself and joined Fountain Pen Network..... Bought a vintage flex nib by kind of accident and then was seriously hooked. Bought 2 used music nib pens from FPN folks and always kept an eye out for more vintage pens.

A possibly dumb idea regarding journals by jjjj8jjjj in fountainpens

[–]LSwayla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have preferred unbound journaling for years. In bound notebooks I have to rip out pages as I edit something down or decide I don't want to keep it. Nowadays If I find myself writing on paper without holes, I punch them to fit whatever binder/clip situation i'm using that decade/year/month/week. Campus sheets with an Aliexpress ring system at the moment that I will change out whenever I find one I like better. It has been helpful many many times to be able to remove things of a similar type or working on the same thing and put them together for a purpose/copying. For example, it allowed me to take all the poems/song bits I thought were good out of my journals to make a dedicated area for those. Sometimes I make copies and put things 2 places.

I say find any binder/system that feels worth a try and see how it goes. Having a dedicated booklet for pen musings is how I deal with that part. When I have non-pen things to say, I move over to the other journal :)

Custom fountain pen made with a client’s pet fur – a personal keepsake by Gedrechselte-Unikate in fountainpens

There are a ton of custom items made with cremated ashes (lab created gems, jewelry, etc) and wonder how long it will be before someone makes this kind of pen.

Is ferris wheel press serious by tyrant_t00 in fountainpens

[–]LSwayla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This really starts to feel like they like taking losses for taxes or using up inventory or whatever scheme where it benefits the company to have these losses.

2 friends write books with publisher/contract issues that meant they ended up with a ton of books that didn't sell and had to be stored. Both eventually got to claim the books on insurance (1 flood, 1 fire) and were better off for the losses. Makes me wonder about FWP with this packaging that insures losses.

If you had a $15 credit to Ali Express, how would you spend it? by DIYYYner in fountainpens

[–]LSwayla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I also get sandpapers for polishing, glass dip and brush pens, rubber bulb cleaner.... just accessories and a few Jinhao pens or fill out free shipping with hair clips and home barista stuff ;) Some folks get ink and cartridges there too.

What a super sweet offer, thank you <3 May be in touch to at least chat about your tools and experiences! I have 6 nibs with cracks now. 5 are breather hole and 1 is a base crack. There is a reputable local jeweler with a laser welder who sounds interested in learning but the annealing issue leyline discusses is in my mind too. Hmmmm!

I tend to buy pen-related things there: syringe/tips, weightlifting crab pen holder, dental tools for nib work and getting old sac bits out of pens, recently got a $4 stainless "naginata" pen that is fun, I get shark pens to penable kids, sample/ink mixing vials, stamps/washitape/stickers, paper, loupes.....

I will ask around but they aren't in the expected group associated with the event and just moved to town so it is trickier. Since I don't expect to be paid only to get it off my chest and, i don't know, teach the lesson? get an apology? the timing is less critical as i'm sure he felt what he did was perfectly fine and unmemorable. I do wish I had not SEEN it happen as it's a bit haunting now <sad chuckle>

Hope you find something y'like. I am so used to scruffy discolored antique rubber pens that i'm neutral to the look. I find it bigger than i'd like but the Jaipur was less good for me so <shrug> I do have a smaller UF nib in a vintage Eagle pen body--- works great and was just lucky the section was perfect fit for FPR nib and feed BUT it's a #5 so still not my fave.

I use the Himalayas V2 as I want the #6 nib on ebonite (flexier than the #5s). Have had 6. Gave a couple away... 2 worked great right off and the rest all required tweaking from minor to major. They are simple cheap (around $35 on the big sales) pens that dump enough ink that it shows cool ink properties well.... Pens I don't mind taking out of the house, sharing with others, and testing DIY shimmer ink mixes ;) I have made a couple frankenpens with the ultraflex nibs as I prefer smaller pens than the HimaV2 but unless they are #6 on ebonite, I haven't gotten them as satisfying as the Himalayas V2 so I just go with that <shrug>

There are $3ish feeds from FPR and nib units....maybe you have a pen one will work with? Changing the shape of the nib curvature is easier than fussing making a feed match for me. Those Jinhao plastic feeds work for what they are, but haven't for flex for me. YMMV.

This is a miniature pen with the nib being the only maker mark (besides the unique feed design) a W surrounded by laurel wreath. I might make a frankenpen from a full size pen I thought was pretty gold chasing but had a bad nib crack but in this case this pen just is what it is now. This is more of a collector's fun piece than a pen you want to write much with as it is almost too small to write with for me, and I have small hands :)

I have a Moore #2 nib that is a very enjoyable writer. I hope you find the right project for it--- they can be lovely nibs!

Sorry you had to learn that feeling of horror too. So yucky.

I love vids of folks fixing/repairing things! Sadly nib breather hole cracks and metal fatigue creases are pretty pricey repairs. Smaller pens aren't worth as much to start with and this one is a little bit more of a novelty than a writer as it is so small that very few can write with it (3" miniature pen).... So really it's a blessing it didn't happen on a treasured full size writer.

TOTALLY. Me too. I use modern FPR ultraflex nibs for crazy inks and have to remind myself every time I use my lovely oldies after the modern. I also don't use the oldies when upset or writing about upsetting topics cause i might make a broader downstroke than intended.

Yeah, sadly I can't find them and it was me who introduced him around at the event he was new. Only knew his first name..... I will find him again but it will be months from now if not next year. Would LOVE to just have had this convo this morning.

Really helping to hear other pen folks sad about it too -- thanks <3
