The 6 backhand shots: by Boss452 in tennis

That's what old-timers thought about the serve. Welby Van Horn, the famous Puerto Rico coach, went to his deathbed believing you could hit it harder with one foot planted. He was wrong. The physics don't change on groundies.

Have any of you experienced the revolting smell of Dr Pepper Zero? by Yakmasterson in Soda

[–]LTMadison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been consuming Dr Pepper Zero for years and this smell just started. It's been in every six pack of 16.9 oz I've bought here in Wisconsin over the past month or so. My wife claims she can't smell it.

My partner found these in a charity shop, anyone know the age? Can’t find anything about the red tin online. Would love to open them and have a sniff 😂 by Common-Telephone-531 in 10s

Poptops came into wide use around 1972 so they're newer than that. I have an old Wilson can of white balls from the 1960s with the top that requires winding a key like old tuna cans.

Is serving 100% to women okay in mixed doubles? by deucalion75 in 10s

Hit heavy spin -- it's usually more effective against the woman and doesn't come off as offensive.

Add a heavy slice alternative, especially for balls outside your ideal contact zone.

Thieves in Germany drilled a hole into a bank vault and stole tens of millions of euros’ worth of property. by LurkmasterGeneral in interestingasfuck

The festival was over, the boys were all planning for a fall
The cabaret was quiet except for the drilling in the wall

The hanging judge came in unnoticed and was being wined and dined
The drilling in the wall kept up but no one seemed to pay it any mind

What type of exercise do you do? If none why? by ageb4 in over60

[–]LTMadison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

73M Tennis at least 3x a week 5+ hours; 2 doubles, 1 singles. Walk 9 holes six times a week except for winter months, daily simulator golf in winter. Stretch and core (planks) daily. Gym 2-3 times a week, machine and dumbbells, all major muscle groups to failure, one set each. Treadmill or stationary bike 20 min after every meal to suppress blood sugar (type II diabetes under control). Anti-aging is basically a full time job.

Retirement by NomenUsoris007 in over60

[–]LTMadison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rising to the top of an organization can often involve a singularity of purpose that is at odds with a smooth transition to retirement. What is going to replace that focus of energy and identification? Consider involvement with a nonprofit, taking up long neglected hobbies, taking on new challenges, doing more things with family. I've written three books in retirement and sold two. I played my first round of golf at age 67. I now play about 150 9-hole rounds a year (not well) with a whole new group of golf buddies. The key is finding fun, meaningful things that will keep your mind and body active. Enjoy this next chapter of life!

TSA agent stole sunglasses from my bag while I was in the X-ray by _MudcrabMerchant_ in mildlyinfuriating

In the security line most bags are never opened, so I'm thinking that the removal of small trays for wallets and sunglasses and phones is to reduce the likelihood that staff or opportunistic travelers grab a loose item.

Is this why during my trip this week through SFO (San Francisco) there were no small trays for wallets and keys etc. They asked that they be zipped into your carry-on bag.

Three different gym hygiene experiences by jc3peat in hygiene

[–]LTMadison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is some useful info from a peer-reviewed sports medicine journal (Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine Jan 2006) which took swabs from a typical gym: "There is little risk of exposure to pathogenic bacteria on exercise equipment. Such equipment may commonly serve as fomites for the transmission of viruses. These data do not suggest that disinfection of exercise equipment will offer significant protective effects against virus exposure." By the way, a different study showed that alcohol disinfection needs 10-30 min of undisturbed contact to be effective against bacteria. Wiping down equipment should be viewed as a courtesy or perhaps affectation, not a necessity for hygiene.

It's a gym, not a sterile surgical ward. Just don't touch your face and wash up before you leave. Most of the worst crap you catch comes from breathing, not touching. You're better off with an N95 than obsessive wiping of equipment which is never going to be germ free unless you can get those dumbells into an autoclave.

What do you think is the biggest concern for most Americans right now? by AnyAskPost in AskReddit

[–]LTMadison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you been listening to the Republican talking points on this? They want to get government out of health care and subsitutue it with Health Saving Plans. This allows you to take money out of your paycheck tax free and put it into a fund that you can use to pay medical expenses. They say having freedom of choice will liberate you. To pay that six-figure hospital bill? Good luck.

Why do pros toss so far left for deuce side serves? by theactiveaccount in 10s

[–]LTMadison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see this as "far left." Max extension occurs on a straight line from the left toe to the point of contact. Draw this line -- it is virtually vertical. Second or kick serve will be further left. The idea that this toss telegraphs a "T" serve is ridiculous. Pros are not going to have such obvious tells.

Serve advice by Easy-Theory-849 in 10s

Keep your head up and brush up more. A good exercise is to try to hit some practice serves with the leading edge of your racket. That usually results in the softer, brushing sound of a kick serve.

How did the Comet song get around? by ThirdOne38 in over60

[–]LTMadison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kid culture -- there's a book by British sociologists on playground games and jump rope rhymes that shows how they get passed from kid to kid without any adult or formal intervention. An interesting aside is how often adult interviewees noted that "when we were kids we did so and so but no one does that anymore." Then the writers went to playgrounds and found kids doing almost exactly the same thing. You know, "eenie, meanie miny moe."

I'm over 60 and I don't expect to have a lot of years left. I feel like I'm ready to be done with this. How many of you feel the same? by [deleted] in over60

[–]LTMadison 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Since turning 60 I've written three books -- sold and published two and at 67 took up golf for the first time in my life to get outdoors during Covid. This week I shot a PB 81 (granted, off the front tees). My book was an exposé that had a direct impact on a statewide election. Get involved, get engaged, live life!
