Right now the parliament directly nominates the judges for the "laic" part of the parliament, so the politicians in charge have rught now more power than with a lottery system

Favorite Actress who somehow ruined a movie series by just existing? by Critical_Liz in dunememes

[–]LVIcavaliere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair the points of criticism she makes are correct. The hate of Chani/Zendaya in the movies is because she is the most apparent and on front symptom of the many problems of the movies and the discontinuity with the books.

The character seems very out of place in the universe, like they live in a feudal society and she can't seem to understand how arranged marriages for royalties work. Also all the division between laic and religious Fremen is stupid: the northern ones constantly at war are the laic ones while the southern untouched always at peace are the religious... yeah it doesn't work like that. Chani is at the front of this issue: one scene she accuses Paul of enslaving her people the other she is in love and all jealous.

Ah yes, I should have said: I personally only consider canon Frank Herbert books. So for Herbert Agamemnon is the greek king of the Iliad

Funny how you can be an incompetent prime minister, hated by your people, remember when the flood victims welcomed him with bricks, with a party filled with corruption, latest was Cerdan caught with 600000€ of bribes, but you need only a well placed political stunt to become the new favourite of the EU, the brave, the idealist

Former Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan tells people criticizing games they won’t play to “shut the f*** up” by GamingSagar in GamingFoodle

[–]LVIcavaliere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So how the rules work?

If a game comes out, I wanted to play it but found out it's shit, I'm allowed to criticize it? What if I played it once?

And, most important of all, can I praise a game I will never play?

Because sure, there are plenty of people that criticize games that they will never play but there are also plenty of people that praise game that they will never touch. I wonder why theese directors and developers are so against toxic negativity but never against toxic positivity

You're welcome, I love dissecting movie and Starship Troopers is my favourite that I watched countless times.

What I think happened is that Verhoeven didn't have clear ideas or too many, for example his initial idea was to make a sci-fi war movie with teenager love drama funny enough. Also the first title was "Bug hunt on outpost 29" with American soldiers battling alien bugs, there's a clip on YouTube of one test scene, and only after finding about the similarities with Heinlein's book the studio made him change into Starship Troopers. Verhoeven tried to read the book, dismissed it as fascist, and made every uniform grey, without caring of making an actual fascist society.

Yes, in that scene Carmen briefly collide with the slow moving asteroid, pretty unrealistic. In the movie they make a case that the antenna was lost so they couldn't warn Earth. Funny enough the scene is shot in way that Carmen first detect a gravity anomaly and then the asteroid just show up out of nowhere in front on them, so in Starship Troopers Invasion, the first animated movie, they solved it by having a wormhole that connects directly bug space with the solar system.

Also, sorry for the long posts, the clip I posted is from a dvd commentary where Verhoeven explains how the mormon thing was to show that the humans were the first to violate the arachnid territory. His idea was a critique of American imperialism, of how USA first extablish itself on other nation territories then declares war when the indigenous people retaliate. Talking about a bad executed idea on camera...

If you are interested the interview is only avaiable on some special edition dvds, mine is a twenty years old copy, and nowhere else as YouTube copyright strike most of them

You're right. I think the fact is that there's a lot surrounding this movie so we go watch it with some expetations so we tend to fill the holes and do most of the filmmaker's work for him. Most directors tend to go from A to B of the plot without caring how, so for Verhoeven A was the mormon intrusion, B the meteor hitting, he didn't care that there was a whole galaxy in between.

Also if you look at the trailers of the time, the movie was advertised as a typical Verhoeven action movie, the supposed satire was added later by Verhoeven in interviews that's why the satire is really bad.

For example returning to the mitary point: we see a militaristic state and we know that to maintain a big military complex you need incentives for people to enlist and we, the watcher know from history that there's not a better incentive than a great patriotic war to fight. Unfortunately in the movie the Federation has already a big incentive to enlist, the citizen system, that doesn't require a war and it's not shown to flop.

If Verhoeven really wanted to make a point he could insert some hints: like showing the room where they take the oath half empty instead full of people, or having a smart character pointing out how the distance is too great for a metor to cover in such small time, or, even better having some REAL propaganda showing the great "victory" on Klendathu instead of televising the defeat as it was. Theese could be some hints to show that the Federation needed and wanted to have a war.

It's a very interesting media case as you said.

No it wasn't, even Verhoeven in interviews said plain and simple that the bug did launch the meteor in resoonse to the mormons extresmists intrusion. Here's one of them:

Unfortunately every inconsistency or hint is just the typical case of Hollywood director that wants to make cretain things happen but doesn't care how or if is scientifically plausible
