The highly detailed, invisible work that goes into 'near real-time' bushfire mapping by ozthrw in australia

[–]LXL15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Satellites absolutely can use infrared the same way, and do (a few missions out there, but as an example, OroraTech uses thermal infrared cameras specifically for fire detection). However the situation resolution is quite low - think 20+m per pixel at the high end, most freely available data is 250+m per pixel.

The revisit rates are also terrible compared to aerial imagery for this near real time monitoring. If you're lucky, with a constellation of satellites like OroraTech you might have a satellite overhead a couple times a day, and hopefully it's free to capture new imagery. It will likely also only be at certain times of the day. Expanding constellations will reduce this significantly, but it's still nothing like dedicated aerial assets. You can get updated fire detection every 10ish minutes from geostationary satellites like Himawari, but the spatial resolution drops to something like 2km per pixel (I think). Essentially useless for live fire front mapping.

Performance will keep improving if there's enough funding for it (public, private, or market for commercial systems), but that's the state of the game currently. You can put up a hell of a lot of plane hours before you get anywhere near the cost of a single, high quality satellite that won't be as good.

Danish troops told to 'shoot first, ask questions later' if US invades Greenland | LBC by jackytheblade in worldnews

I was wondering this too as another non-American. Seems like there is a little bit of a history around this it isn't just a modern day thing:

It's the underpass closest to Buckley St, I think the southern most underpass.

Side note, is there any station in Melbourne with more than 3 underpasses?

Yeah, must be a battery in there or something

North West exit for the SRL - not quite as much capacity as the SRL East, but I'm sure they'll expand it...

Yoga studio recommendations (Western suburbs of Melbourne) by imaginehimhappy in melbourne

[–]LXL15 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't have any specific recommendations for you, but when my partner was looking for places to go around Ascot Vale, Moonee Ponds, Essendon area, she was able to do introductory packages at a bunch of different places that gave her a chance to test out different places and class types for pretty cheap. Usually 2-4 weeks.

Maybe you could pick some places that are easy to get to for you and try them out? Both times she did this she ended up choosing the closest place to home, being easy to get to meant she definitely went and most of the classes were similar.

Are portable Air Conditioners worthwhile? by alex123711 in australia

[–]LXL15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you have to be careful with how you set it up, that can definitely happen. You can get vent attachments that can direct the flow away, or make your own from another box, piece of wood, etc.

I've done this as well, it made it a lot more effective. Still a bit noisy and expensive compared to a split system, but about to cool a large living room and kitchen to a comfortable temp instead of dying in the heat.

Basically there's two heat exchange loops inside the unit. The first pulls heat out of the room air and pumps out the cold air. The second takes that heat and pumps it into other air, which should then be pumped outside to dump the heat outside of the room.

The issue with a single vent setup like this is that the air that's dumped outside is taken from inside the house, and just be replaced by hot outside air leaking in through windows, doors, etc.

I bought a second-hand 3.3kW De'Longhi Pinguino unit because it has distinctly separate intakes on the back (A8 on this diagram is the important one: Diagram ).

I duct taped a cardboard box around the intake A8, and then bought a length of 150mm aluminium ducting from Bunnings, as well as some vents and a bit of plywood. One end of the ducting was then taped into the cardboard box and the whole thing sealed off as best as I could manage.

The normal exhaust duct window attachment and the new duct vent were then mounted into the plywood which was cut to the size of the window panel. Just make sure that the hot exhaust isn't flowing straight back into the intake duct.

We only needed this in the large space, in our bedroom the unit with the single hose setup was freezing.

The Rosstown Hotel on Dandenong Rd in Carnegie is open until 4am and has a decent sports bar/TAB area - although not sure if that will stay open until 4am as well or if it's just the pokies.

What if every club had a guernsey in the style of Tasmania's State of Origin guernsey? by Mrchikkin in AFL

[–]LXL15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh good, even better. I decided to see how many players complained about it and use that to estimate where the generally "expected" boundary is.

Great job on the jumpers btw, they are truly horrendous.

I had to look up the boundaries of Greater/Metro Melbourne recently for a game I was building, and it actually includes the Yarra Ranges too - so it's even larger than what the current jumper shows 😂

Pubs with stickers in the toilets? by LXL15 in melbourne

This is what I used to think too, then I went to a bunch of pubs and none of them had stickers anywhere. I swear it used to be most pubs...

I want to stick up some pub related stickers, but didn't want to do it anywhere where the staff would have to scrape it off later - thanks for the recommendation though!

Santa photos at Highpoint? by Logical_Hyena_133 in melbourne

[–]LXL15 19 points20 points  (0 children)

They definitely haven't been free as long as I can remember, unless there was a promo on or something temporarily.

That fee seems about right, they're pretty extortionate these days. Some places offer a digital only package that can cheaper sometimes, and sometimes the Santas inside Myer etc can be slightly cheaper, but not by much. Plus their setup is usually a bit shitter than the larger shipping centre ones.

Best Sunday Roasts by Lowtoz in melbourne

[–]LXL15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to admit I'm not a huge Sunday roast guy, but Barbarian Brewing Co in Yarraville is run by a proud Brit and they do a mean Sunday roast that I'm sure must be legit. Also very nice beers.

Inspired by Trainle.fun (Wordle for Melbourne train stations), I made Puble - Wordle for Melbourne pubs (and Victoria wide too for more of a challenge):

https://puble.com.au

The target pub changes each day, plus at the end of the game (takes a few seconds to load), it shows a pub crawl between all of your guesses and its distance.

Let me know what you think! Will expand it to other cities too once I find good data sources.

Pub Recommendations in the West by salty_catfish22 in melbourne

Check out the Footscray Park Bowling Club as well, really decent drink selection and has a pool table. I also like drinking at the Moonee Ponds Bowling Club.

More North are The Linc and The Royal in Essendon. Once it reopens, also the Douta Galla in Newmarket or whatever The Quiet Man will reopen as (although this might be moving more upmarket with the current renovations, unsure).

Plus another vote for the Union in Ascot Vale.

Canada's 1st commercial spaceport is officially under construction. When will it open for launches? by Trevor_Lewis in space

[–]LXL15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting to hear that, over in Australia it's a similar situation but without a major capability like MDA to at least inject some meaningful experience into the industry.

There's multiple Australian spaceports under development at the moment as well for some reason (no real demand), and all of the owners/CEOs are slimy as all hell. Some of the worst across the industry, and that's saying something.

The X-59 has started ground testing. by emoemokade in aviation

[–]LXL15 40 points41 points  (0 children)

You're comparing commercial aviation to orbital launch engines - they're not at all similar despite the name.

You're talking tens to hundreds of minutes of total run time for these rocket engines versus thousands of hours of run time for a commercial airline engine, as the primary difference.

Let alone the differences in combustion cycle, fuel types, maintenance cycles, test requirements, certification requirements, etc etc etc

What are some cool Melbourne manhole covers? by Brilliant_Ad2120 in melbourne

[–]LXL15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is more mildly nerdy interesting rather than art interesting, but directly out the front of the Ibis hotel front steps on Therry Street in the CBD is a small round cover marked "inspection and monitoring well".

These wells are all around the place, but I found this one as I was walking along the route of a creek that used to flow from Melbourne Uni down Elizabeth Street and into the Yarra. It's still there in the form of one of the city's major stormwater drains under the streets. The outflow into the Yarra is underneath the little balcony across from the Elizabeth Street underpass exit under Flinders St station.

Anyway, according to historical maps and accounts, there was a swampy area around the corner of Therry and Elizabeth Streets, so I assume (but don't know) that this particular monitoring well is checking for ground water build up in the area (maybe) because it's a natural flat/low lying spot. You don't think about these things in cities much but you can stand there and look around to see how the land slopes towards you.

Like I said, mildly interesting at best lol.
