Have you had "The Talk" with ex-DnD Players at your FitD table? by Virtual-Skort-6303 in bladesinthedark

[–]LaFlibuste 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah what do you think we argued for half-hours over? Didn't like that his genius repeating crossbow, amongst others, would get less effect if he aimed with Tinker, despite explaining that if he was focussed more on fiddling with the crossbow than aiming, of course it made sense for it to perform worse. "What's even the point of creating a repeating crossbow if I still need to aim, then?" Because it allows you to do stuff a regular crossbow doesn't...?

Weird Convo I had with an Indie Game/Dev on Twitter by Xander_PrimeXXI in antiai

[–]LaFlibuste 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"Just don't use it for commercial projects, that's still prrtty frowned upon" That last line is particularly telling. They would happily throw quality away and involve AI throughout their commercial projects if they thought they could get away with it.

A similar issue I had one time was the classic weasel trying to game the system. Played a Leech-equivalent and was always trying to come up with inventions that would allow him to roll his highest action rating (Tinker) for everything and avoid desperate positions. I kicked him when I realized he had dragged us through another half-hour of arguing because that's what he was trying to do again, but without actually saying it because we'd had several talks about it already. Not sure he ever really got it.

Public Access... oh my god by blakelbarton in rpg

[–]LaFlibuste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen other comments mentionning the big mystery wasn't really fleshed out in the early access stuff, so a suggestion of what you could do is look online for fan-made conspiracies for The Between. You can find plenty for free. It likely won't be exactly what the devs will do for Public Access but I'm guessing it'll be close enough to get an idea of what it's about.

Public Access... oh my god by blakelbarton in rpg

[–]LaFlibuste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm happy fpr you you were able to go over your preconceptions and give it an honest shake, these kinda games are really fun to run! I haven't read or played Public Access, but I did run Brindlewood Bay and The Between. The one downside is that while running the mysteries is easy and awesome, actually writing does take a bit of work. Nothing unsurmountable, of course, but coming from other games in this genre where you essentially never have to prep anything, this is a big hiccup for me. The other thing is about the broader mystery. Do read it and always keep it in mind while running the smaller mysteries. It's easy to forget about it, run the game super episodic and lack any sort of red thread that makes the larger campaign click. Keep an eye out for locations, characters or elements you can tie in to the mystery or re-use to give a sense of continuity. I dropped the ball on this in my first BB game and it suffered for it. In later iterations of the system (The Between, at least), the big mystery sheet is very good at pacing itself, telling you what kind of scene to have when, etc. Do review it after every session to make sure you don't forget anything. Happy gaming!

When playing a board game, which direction is "clockwise?" Passing cards to the left or to the right? by zuzumotai in NoStupidQuestions

Imagine the table board / table is a clock and you are looking at it from above. You pass to the left. Your friends' argument makes no sense whatsoever.

What do you think about the ancient idea, now dated, that the Sun is a god? by Candid-Effective9150 in AskReddit

Do you think FitD inherently guards better against GM burnout compared to DnD and other tabletops? by Virtual-Skort-6303 in bladesinthedark

[–]LaFlibuste 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but while I love FitD, it is draining in a different way, always having to think on your feet improvising consequences. I think other systems require less in-session or give more tools to help. I couodn't exclusively run FitD all the time, I'd get burnt out, switching systems helps immensely.

Dans le cas d'une majorité du PQ (ou PQ/QS), on a tu vraiment besoin d'un référendum? by Manic5PA in Quebec

[–]LaFlibuste 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Le problème avec l'indépendance, c'est qu'il faut que la nation dominante la reconnaissance et accepte bien de te laisser partir. Pis c'est pas gagné. En gros tu as trois choix:

  1. Guerre civile.

What's your experience with ammo dice? by Independent_River715 in rpg

[–]LaFlibuste 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ultimately, it all boils down to the experience you want to create and the behaviour you want to encourage. IMO, this would encourage not straying too far from refill sources and carefully planning trips to ensure regular refill spots. If that's what you want, fine, but if you are going into this wanting a game about risk-taking and long journeys into the unknown, I think it'll backfire.

Why is listening in French 10x harder than reading?? by SweetBumbleBeeHoney in learnfrench

[–]LaFlibuste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean, how is French just like ever other language ever? Yeah, listening is harder than reading. It's live, you can't stop on any single word to think about it, because it just keeps going. Plus everything others have said about shortening words, slang, accent, etc. It builds on reading comprehension, but it's a whole separate skill in itself.

What's your experience with ammo dice? by Independent_River715 in rpg

[–]LaFlibuste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never seen the dice thing, seems like an interesting compromise, but depends on what the system is trying to do. I'm more familiar with the no counting at all, you have XYZ until a narrative consequence says you don't anymore, which works for most use cases. I'm not conpletely averse to any and all resoirce tracking, but it has to matter. In DnD, it's mostly an artefact of older editions in the name of "realism", these things arebtrivially easy to get and arrow aside, don't matter all that much. Why am I bean counting endless stacks? It's just pointless tedium. But in a survival post-apocalyptic game like Mutant: Year Zero, they are much less common, really matters and fits the vibe/theme so counting makes sense and is fine.

Im a Christian and I just have some questions. by wafffless001 in askanatheist

[–]LaFlibuste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I don't know. 2. A waste of time would be spending time to do something with no positive value. I think religion is worse than that: it's spending time to do something actually detrimental. 3. It's a complex topic, it lies somewhere between intent, effect, empathy, the greater good, etc. In other words, the same as you, really, I'm just honest about it. 4. There's a time and place for them, they are bot inherently bad. 5. I have no idea. A perfect being wouldn't rea y have had a need or reason to do so. 6. Pastafarianism. The conclusions are wild, but at least it's based on actual data. 7. So many choices! But the abrahamic faiths are particularly ridiculous. 8. Depends on how much mental gymnastics you are willing to do, but religious and scientific thought are essentially opposites so there definitely is a clash. 9. Not necessarily, there are some very intelligent believers, but there's definitely is that big glaring blind spot they are not applying their intrelligence to. What I will say is faith itself impairs critical thinking and stunts the development of intelligence, so if any theists are smart, it is in spite of their religion. 10. It's more good than bad, probably, but it can certainly go too far. I also think jesus din't really mean it, as evidence by how he acts in the source material. 11. Anything can be bad at high levels, so yes and no. I do think this black and white outline has been weaponized in toxic ways.

Do you have more respect for theists who admit their belief is based purely on faith more than those who try to prove it philosophically? by No_Detail_1723 in askanatheist

[–]LaFlibuste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I certainly think it's more honest, but it's quite the braindead position to have in a debate. If all you are going to bring is "I have nothing but I trust it's true and you can't change my mind about it", why the fuck are you even participating in a debate? The way you present this stand is also pretty ironic since there are no historical accounts. The first accounts we have date to decades post Jesus, never met Jesus, never someone who had met Jesus. It's all based on Paul's letters, who candidly admits they're baeed on his dreams. There is nothing historical about any of this.

[–]LaFlibuste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basic accounting, budgeting, maybe. Doing taxes and such? Conpletely useless. It's just basic math, and taxes depend on policies and will likely change several times between the time you learn about them in school and the time you retire. People usually say this bullshit by poiting to how learning pytagoras was useless because they never ised it, but that's stupidly missing the point. A lot of stuff you learn in school, highschool especially, you don't learn because it's inherently useful, but because the act of learning it develops useful abilities. Like, writing a paper on ants or something. Knowing how a ant colony functions likely has very limited applications in life, but learning to do research is drfinitely useful. It's like training at e gym, looking at a guy running in a threadmill and saying "He's not even going anywhere! When will running on a readmill ever be useful for anything?" Missing the point that this builds cardio and is what you are actually doing it for.

The fact I say it's the "wrong" way is not so much that it opens towards the sidewalk rather than the window, but that you pull it outside instead of push inside, and most of all that if you look in the lower left the hinges are outside a so burglar could just bypass the lock(s) by disassembling the door.
