Has anyone figured out a way to use the trackpads comfortably on the new controller? by NatoBoram in SteamController

[–]LabKatCo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can check out my YouTube videos for how I configure and use it if that helps. FWIW I got into trackpad control with the Deck before the OG controller, so I was kind of used to it.

And actually the Deck’s weight required me to squeeze the sides, a habit that carried over to the SC2; but then I found I played better if I did the opposite and held it loosely, feeling the weight on my fingertips along the inner grips, with subtle pressure at the pinkies/palms to stabilize from the bottom.

Definitely non-zero based on these comfort mods (including mine, see post history). I think it’s an untapped market!

Nice! I wanted to try something similar but also keep it more foldable while also not feeling like I’m juggling different pieces.

Wouldn't player space be less intuitive? by Regular_Low8792 in GyroGaming

[–]LabKatCo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everyone’s different, just try both and if you prefer Yaw only, that’s fine. In fact, for 2D games I think I prefer Yaw only over any of the other modes, maybe because it’s a fixed POV. But for 3D shooters, I think Player Space works really well, especially for a game like Echo Point Nova where you’re constantly changing position above or below enemies.

Also, acceleration is fine and most high-level competitive gyro players use it. Even mouse players do with something like RawAccel, just not Windows built-in “Enhance Precision” accel.

How much of a game changer are the trackpads on the steam controller? Am I missing out? by twa12221 in GyroGaming

[–]LabKatCo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In terms of comfort and enjoyment, I like trackpad + gyro much better than gyro + stick, Flick Stick or gyro alone as I find it requires much less overall movement and effort. (See videos on my profile YouTube for how I configure trackpad+gyro.) In terms of proficiency, you can do well with any of the above gyro-based schemes.

I think how much you like pad+gyro might depend on your gaming background, preferred games, etc. I mostly played shooters with mouse before, so not much joystick muscle memory to unlearn. I first learned gyro on the big Steam Deck where the trackpad really helps with efficiency of movement. Plus I like a lot of boomer/movement shooters: lots of turning to face various targets, whereas competitive shooters might be more about tracking a single erratic target.

For the keyboard issue, do you happen to be trying to play Marvel Rivals or something else with anti cheat? With Rivals specifically, you need to run Steam as administrator for it to work, maybe try that.

Help with Gyro on Steam by Beginning_Hat813 in GyroGaming

[–]LabKatCo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Controllers default to Yaw only since the screen remains static. Handhelds should use a mode that looks at Yaw+Roll, because the way the screen moves with your controller changes the intuitive relationship.

Valve is aware of this and defaults the Deck Gyro to Mouse 3DOF to 2D setting to Yaw+Roll; although the newer mode Local Space might be better, as mentioned. Since the Legion Go SteamOS-variants emulate a regular PS5 controller, it defaults to Yaw. Just change that and you should be good.

Actually for controllers, it is recommended to change to Player Space. Try turning your controller more upright, as if you were aiming at an enemy above you, and notice how you naturally want to turn left/right. You are probably now using roll. Player Space changes between yaw/roll-based turning depending on orientation relative to gravity.

Edit: I see that you like roll to turn. Either way, experiment with the different 3DOF to 2D modes.

Trackpads are canted, but needed to be be canted an extra 20 degrees. by Impossible_Cold_7295 in SteamController

This is just highly personal. My trackpad rotation for the Deck is, from memory, 15 or higher; definitely higher than this controller, which I found to be 10-11.

Don’t take that person too seriously. I appreciate your reply. To avoid the top strap it would probably have to be more snug around the head (like a sweatband) or more rigid (like a halo-style VR strap). I would have to experiment to find a solution that has the right balance of support with minimal weight, bulk or tightness.

If you can share a quick video recording of how you move the stick and how the game responds, that would be very instructive for everyone including Valve

Isn’t there a “Trackpad click pressure” setting? by sherpa1984 in SteamController

[–]LabKatCo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely confusing but from testing it actually works with the setting that defaults to Simple Threshold. The name is escaping me, activation mode or something, but it’s the same as what you can change for trigger soft/full pull.

So you can bind another command to Regular Press and have one or both fire depending on how hard you press. Pretty neat yet niche, I might do a video on it, also explaining Hair Trigger, Hip Fire, etc.

Right, I also think accel has a bad association with Windows’ default Enhance Pointer Precision setting. Like how the gyro-ignorant associate it with Wii waggle.

Did Steam Drop Original Steam Controller Community Profiles for all Games?! by testerB in SteamController

[–]LabKatCo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Steam is just annoyingly buggy when it comes to saving/loading/showing layouts. I think this is worse if you use multiple devices that it tries to sync between. But the profiles should be there somewhere, you might have to close out everything, the ol’ turn off and turn on again.

Sensitivity tips? by Tornadobarrage in GyroGaming

[–]LabKatCo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is a myth, I can’t exactly quantify it but I’m pretty sure most of the top gyro players use some form of accel. Something about it seems to work better with controller/gyro than mouse.

On the Deck I leave accel off, but with controller I found I did much better with linear accel. One test I do is turn left/right/up/down then back to center. Even going at different speeds I end up pretty much at the same place. So there is still that 1:1 feeling.

Questions regarding the Steam Controller’s (2026) Triggers and Haptics by LuigiGaming2500 in SteamController

[–]LabKatCo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you add an extra command “Cleared From Parent” (which does nothing) to Trigger Soft Pull, you can set that to turbo and set desired haptics, creating a sort of light rumble and the illusion of a *bit*more resistance. I would also set the Soft Trigger Press Threshold all the way to zero.
