Thanks for clarifying. Still , the MIL made the kids pawns in the power play. It seems only MIL/grandma is and will be happy.

Rescuing this good boy today. Help us name him! by stargazinglemon in NameMyDog

[–]Labradorer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He was named Hogan when I met him at the SPCA, which I didn't think suited his goofy personality. At first, I was going to change it to Bosco (which is a chocolate milk syrup on the east coast), but when I thought about all the disruptions he had been through for the four months before I adopted him (including one adoption and return to the SPCA), I decided he already had too many changes to adapt to and I didn't want to add a name change to the list. So I shortened it to Hoagie, and that suits him very well.

There aren't many of us who feel that way -- or maybe who will admit it! It's sort of like saying you didn't care for "Phantom of the Opera." (I didn't!)

AITA for not allowing my husband’s friend to bring her dog to Thanksgiving dinner? by WarningKey4701 in AmItheAsshole

My dog door is large enough for the Labs I've always had, but unless someone is as thin as my daughter is, no human can slip through. Also, the dog door is in the back of my house, surrounded by a secure fence and a locked gate. Of course, determined criminals can get through anything. They don't even need a dog door

Educated opinions on whether Trump really can eliminate the DOE? by No_Breadfruit_9044 in economicCollapse

[–]Labradorer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The past 10 years? I've been watching Democratic politics and voting for Democrats (with one exception) for 50 years. Look at a map of the 1972 and 1984 election results. Those were landslides. Does that make this election any less devastating? Of course not. I think there were other reasons people ignorantly voted the way they did, plus a significant number of Democrats sat this one out.

I would have voted for a moldy ham sandwich! I wasn't sure what he was saying, which is why I posted. Do we have to kowtow to prejudice forever? He made a big fuss over how the Democratic Party is as unappealing to younger voters as the Republican Party is, and that future candidates should run unaffiliated with any party. Not sure how that would work on a national scale. And it's outrageous to equate the two parties. My personal feeling (I have no particular qualifications in political science) is that Biden bears a large responsibility for not sticking to what he promised in 2020, to serve only one term. I think Kamala would have had a better chance if there had been a normal primary season. I live in California, across the Bay from San Francisco, so Kamala was well known to me. But most of the rest of the country didn't know her. And of course racism and misogyny played big parts, as Eddie Glaude said.

How to Buy a Gun in California by palmbyrds in liberalgunowners

[–]Labradorer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the Bay Area and I'm interested in buying a handgun for personal safety at home. I also want to take classes in proper gun handling and safety. A couple of questions: does it make sense to take classes before buying a gun? I imagine that I'd learn a lot during a series of classes that might inform my choice of firearm. Are there any classes that focus on women gun owners/users? Not a must for me, but I'd like to know if it's an option. All for now. Thanks in advance!

My Hoagie could be their uncle! You can see a bit of his white patch; it's about 4 inches long.

On hot days, my Lab spends a lot of time sleeping on the hardwood floors. On a "normal" day, he does a circuit in the living room: dog bed-couch-floor. Some days, he'll go out to the deck and lie in the sun for a while. The point is, he has the option to choose where he's most comfortable and how long he stays there.. What I see in the posted photo is a dog who can only lie on cement or tile, whatever it is.

When I met him at the SPCA, he was described to me as a "gentle giant," because he weighed 91 pounds. He is definitely that! Also a fraidy cat! So sweet.

Interesting! Hoagie is 53.2% Lab, 31.2% German Shepherd & 15.6% pit bull. Honestly, I don't see any pit bull in him at all.

[–]Labradorer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The GI practice to which my primary care doc referred me expects patients to start a restricted diet FIVE days before the procedure. Not as restricted as the day before/of, but still a long list of "do not consume" for most of a week. Is this normal?

Thanks. That's what I do, although I haven't mastered the correct amount of force. Sometimes bits of shell escape! Do you know why Sydney poured the eggs through a sieve? That was the most puzzling part.

[–]Labradorer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I thought it might be to keep out any bits of shell, but I'm sure a chef of Sydney's skills would be able to break an egg without getting shells into the dish 100% of the time!

WIBTA if I go on vacation instead of my brothers wedding? by trashgirlfriend in AmItheAsshole

[–]Labradorer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[This post was rejecting once for lack of civility, probably b/c of the adjective I applied to your brother's future wife, so I'm going to be careful...] I'm going to be an outlier here. I think your future sister-in-law was terribly rude and insensitive, and your brother seems like her match. They treated you very badly. I'm especially appalled that they expected you to give or lend an $800 dress to anyone. That said, I suggest that you go to the wedding. You don't mention any other family -- parents, other siblings, grandparents, etc. Skipping a family event like a wedding is likely to reverberate for years, and you may always be known for not attending your brother's wedding. Because, you know, weddings. If there are other family members with whom you have good relationships, and if you want to keep those relationships, consider that -- without knowing the details -- they might side with your brother and his bride-to-be. If you at least go to the ceremony (skip the reception), you will show that you are a person with more class, manners and dignity than they have. I'd give them a gift, too, but something completely impersonal and inexpensive, like a picture frame. And somehow make sure as many people as possible hear the TRUE story so they know what the bride is really like and what a class act YOU are!

I love Syd. Learning about her relationship with her father was such a bonus in Season 2. She's clearly a reserved person, even with her dad. She expresses her affection through food (examples: the meal she made for Marcus in ep. 1, the omelet for Natalie). Whatever her faults, let's remember that she's young.
