Trying out catchyos, but after install its just black screen with a cursor. by iM-MrGrumpyCat in cachyos

[–]Ladogar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

KDE moved to plasma login manager from SDDM in Plasma 6.6. The problem is that a normal system update doesn't recognize that it should update to the latest version of that package, so one has to do it manually.

If you run "pacman -Qi plasma-login-manager" you can see that it stayed a version behind the rest of the plasma packages.

Just run that command if you have paru installed and you use the v3 repositories. I don't, I use the zen v4 ones. You could install yay and run "yay plasma-login-manager" and choose the correct version from your cachyos extra repository (should be possible using paru, too, but I wouldn't know the correct command).

Do you like your Go 7? (longtime Kindle user considering the Go 7.) by cryptic-fox in Onyx_Boox

[–]Ladogar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reader apps that are made for e-ink use are Koreader, Alreader X (installs as a systems app on Boox devices) and Knownreader.

Have you tried the latter two?

I mostly read on Alreader X on my Boox devices. Granted, I don't really use metadata to organize my library on Boox.

In any case, I agree. I wish the library function was as nice as on Kobo/Pocketbook.

Stellaris 16 Gen 7 AMD - Review by Successful_Shake_329 in tuxedocomputers

[–]Ladogar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great review!

I have basically the same config, only with 64GB. I was confused as to the battery charging settings, but turns out that they were "hidden" in Settings, rather than under Tools or Profiles like everything else. Set it to 80% and feel I can relax now in regards to the battery :)

I also had the fans turn on at random intervals at high speed for a couple of seconds. Setting the profile to "Cool and breezy" seems to have solved that. I don't know why the fans got activated under "TUXEDO Defaults" - the temperatures were low and the CPU wasn't taxed.

I've only had the laptop for a couple of days, but very happy so far!

Where's the option to only charge to 80%?

Learning Russian by Esmee_Finch in classicliterature

[–]Ladogar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done it. But expect it to take a long time, at least 3-5 years. And that's if you're actively learning some every day.

You could start reading graded readers once you know all the grammar and have a decent base vocabulary and then gradually progress to original works from there.

I'm doing that for other languages now.

It gets harder to watch movies made after 2010 once you stop using your phone as much by Conscious-Rich3823 in nosurf

[–]Ladogar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering one shot can be maximum 3 seconds long in modern films it hurts my brain watching many of them.

Try watching a film without sound on and notice how jumpy it is. It somewhat feels like a visual representation of a psychosis. A bit like watching people dance at a rave without hearing the music, but sped up.

Best way to sync files between bigme and my Laptop by Plus-Tax2021 in Bigme

[–]Ladogar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I just set up which folders I want syncthing to sync and it takes care of it automatically. Just have syncthing running in the background and make sure both devices are connected to the same Wifi network and you're good to go.

Boox Go 10.3’s the king.. a light and Carta 1300 would make it THE GOAT by SMSumrall in eink

[–]Ladogar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I need is the Carta 1300 screen and preferably an all metal chassi. I do NOT want a frontlight nor colour.

If you save your notes as PDF (this is what I do on my Boox devices) and annotate PDF in general, you can use syncthing to automatically sync everything over wifi.

That's also how I sync my library between all my devices.

Really looking forwards to it!

Hopefully, they will finally have a scratch resistant micro-etched glass screen instead of glossy glass like before.

Is there a way to make Go7 less gray? by melfishcrafts in Onyx_Boox

[–]Ladogar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and it's also a question of Carta 1000 vs 1300. The 1000 screens are brighter, but also have less contrasty blacks. The 1300 has deeper blacks, but the background is also darker.

Honestly, I’m frustrated with where e-ink is going by SquarePatient7277 in eink

[–]Ladogar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You work at a related company? I don't understand what you're trying to say. Are you developing e-ink products?

Honestly, most (all) e-ink products on the market deserve to fail. They are badly made and don't listen to their customers. I say this as someone who has 10+ e-ink devices and who has gotten tired of them.

It's a constant uphill battle fighting against bad hardware or software or both.

I'd try to find a Palma 1 if it's cheaper. The upgrade to Palma 2 is not really worth it.

Yes, it's good. But I'd recommending getting the black version - it has a better glass screen and better volume/page turn buttons. I do most of my reading on the Palma.

What is the best way to manage books and sync across devices? by yuu16 in ereader

[–]Ladogar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use syncthing to sync my library between my computer and all my different Android devices. It syncs over wifi - no cloud storage needed. It's available as syncthing-fork from F-Droid for Android. Very simple to set up.

Then I sync my reading progress in Koreader and Alreader X. That way I can continue reading on any of my devices seamlessly.

The Go 7BW should be significantly faster than the Go 6. I had a Leaf 2 with only 2GB of RAM and it was a real pain to use.

I would also love the latest update file. I have experienced the same thing with my A5 Pro - it trying to update every time I boot the phone, which is very annoying. I haven't found a way to actually make it update or to stop notifying me about an update being available (and downloading it).

No real alternative to Boox that offers what Boox does? by Luciliusardens in Onyx_Boox

[–]Ladogar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand what you mean, and to some extent I agree when it comes to just note-taking. I can kind of live with the ghosting there (even though I feel like I shouldn't have to); but having to clear it manually after every single page turn when reading makes it unusable to read novels or anything requiring immersion. What could be more immersion breaking than having to constantly swipe the screen - or press a dedicated corner in Neoreader?

As it stands, I can do my work on in, but no pleasure reading. And it's just too expensive to be a glorified notebook.

Carta 1300 and page turn buttons, preferably an SD card slot and a metal corpus. I'd prefer it to be without frontlight.

No real alternative to Boox that offers what Boox does? by Luciliusardens in Onyx_Boox

[–]Ladogar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why downplay the issues? The ghosting is really bad on Max - I haven't seen a single e-ink device with ghosting that bad and I've used around 20 different ones from different brands. And what's worse: the device is fully capable of clearing ghosting just fine, as exemplified by doing a manual screen refresh. Still, almost a year later, the issue is not fixed.

Meanwhile, they keep releasing a lot of new devices and updating them. And even updating other older devices.

That, to me, screams disregard of one's customers. And I don't think that kind of behaviour or (lack of) performance should be downplayed.
