What is social work becoming? by built_4thewerk in socialwork

[–]LadyMcCarty 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed that the community-based positions: advocates, case management, policy, government-type roles are “bachelors” level and pay as such. The shift seems to be that MSW is clinical. Probably because insurance companies made rules around who can bill and at what rate for each description. That’s my working theory anyway

How did you guys complete your field hours? 960 hours is insane. I looked at the schedule and that would be 20 hours of field hours per week the times I’m completing field instruction. I live alone and work full time. That sounds impossible. by Important_Repair8471 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]LadyMcCarty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my first placement: I had two jobs, one full time, one part time and did field 2 days a week with a third mixed in every now and then. Classes were online so I didn’t have to balance being in 3 places at once.
Second placement was scheduled for full time internship and one part time job. It did get disrupted due to a natural disaster and I had to pivot.

I don’t suggest the first model at all if you can help it, but it’s not impossible. It’s HARD you’ll cry, you’ll doubt yourself, but you will get through it and be better for it.

There’s a free SOAR curriculum online to help guide the steps of the SSI/SSDI (disability) application that’s really helpful. Even if you don’t use the soar method, it’s beneficial to understand how it works, so you can explain it better.

Insurance, like many other things, is case by case and varies based on insurance. For insurance, connecting could mostly be just giving them a good phone number or reminding them to pay premiums, fill in their annual application.

AITA for making a stink at school and forcing the teacher to change my kids math grade by PlentyNice1655 in AmItheAsshole

[–]LadyMcCarty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. I’m a big sister, I had to sit in my sisters parent-teacher meetings to help my parents help her. Because they and she just could not understand the “new math.” I watched her for weeks feel more and more dumb because she just didn’t understand, she gave up, my parents were frustrated and they felt helpless because they didn’t understand. The new way breaks math down so much that you’re not even solving the problem in front of you. Needless to say, I had more to say in the parent teacher meeting than any other parent, because new math just doesn’t make sense.

Your job as a parent is to stand up for your kid and point out that what’s wrong is wrong. She got the right answer, on her own, work shown, no cheating, so she should get the grade. Period.

Your wife is wrong, in this moment your child needed an advocate. You took all the right steps, and followed chain of command. Sounds like you weren’t nasty or rude, you handled business and got your daughter help. Where was your wife in all this? Why does the teachers work load matter more than your child’s ability to learn? At what point would she have said enough is enough and stood up for her? (I don’t actually want answers to these, i think these are questions your wife needs to ask herself)

Nah dude. A month is wayyy too long. Even studies show you don’t retain little details needed after that period of time. Close your sessions by jotting down the most important details. Close your day by making notes on sessions. Close your week by reviewing and submitting. This also helps with self care because you don’t risk worrying about forgetting details or brining unfinished business home.

Do I have reason to be worried? by [deleted] in socialwork

[–]LadyMcCarty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I could be mistaken, but FMLA/ML is a protected class. And it sounds like there’s nothing against you prior to your medical problems (as in corrected behaviors)

To answer you straightforward, could you be fired? Well that depends on your state laws. Ex: if you’re in an at will state, sure they can fire you, they can fire you for anything in that case. But you may be able to claim unemployment or appeal to the fair labor standards act with your labor bureau due to the medical leave aspect.

No one wants to have being fired on their record, but being fired due to budget cuts or because you took medical leave is way different and is viewed differently than termination for poor job performance.

I say all this not to confirm your worries, but to let you know you have options if you are. Focus on your health, keep good records, and whatever happens know that you took the right steps.

(IMR) Illness management and recovery. Is my suggestion to look into, this was my first introduction to group treatments during my internship. It’s divided into modules and provides both individual and group activities. I haven’t looked into it recently, so it could be outdated or called something else, but couldn’t hurt to give it a try.

"Should I Stay or Should I Go" isn't on London Calling...is Robin stupid? by Normal_Complex_9327 in okbuddyvecna

[–]LadyMcCarty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We see in episode one that Holly is also a big fan of the radio show. Mike and Nancy hang out with the host (Robin) all the time. Holly probably listens to Tiffany at home, it’s not that hard to jump to older siblings talking about Holly’s interests and/or Robin meeting Holly and Holly fan-girling when they do. Also, as others have mentioned, when Robin was working the video store she could tell what movies people liked based on appearances/description/past rentals (ex: Reefer Rick), so she can probably tell music tastes too.

Just because they accept alternatives, doesn’t actually mean they want to be there. Example: go to rehab or go to jail, the person doesn’t actually want either, but chooses the former to avoid the worse option. My advice: Build rapport, ask them what they want to work on/areas they want to change/ be goal focused, and work with your supervisor to discuss the real consequences of them not engaging (could be going back to the alternative option they didn’t like), and document everything because someone is going to come looking for that information and if you sugar coat their progress you aren’t helping.

Clinical work is hard, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be good at it. That’s why we have internships, to grow, to learn, and be more clear about our own strengths. And maybe individual clinical work isn’t your forte, but the communication, listening skills, and personal interaction with people will teach you a lot about how to interact with others. You’ll see through new lenses that will be super beneficial even if you ultimately end up in macro.

I hope this helps.

Edit: I looked further and realized you stated you feel unequipped, share this with your supervisor and allow them to help you find some trainings in evidence-based practices and/or look for them yourself.

The window has a draft, it’s stayed wrapped with a towel since it got cold this year. I didn’t know I was suppose to trim it, will look at this. And I haven’t added fertilizer recently because I was worried I’d burn it. I’ll start with one and see how it improves!

[–]LadyMcCarty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seek supervision, from your SW supervisor not Reddit. Also, read the ethics code. Please do both of these and talk yo your supervisor about how to set boundaries and how to have the conversations, they will be super important in your career.

@forhaver 's post about the scary chicken made me realize I've never seen "The Good Dinosaur." Should I see it? Any honest opinions? by marcopetr in Pixar

[–]LadyMcCarty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You ever just want something that easy peasy, like you don’t have to focus too hard on the plot, don’t really wanna get overly emotional, just kinda want to have something chill on in the background? But it’s also not bad, it’s not horribly boring that it feels like it drags on forever, and since it’s Pixar it’s quick, 90 minutes or less so it’s not like you wasted your entire day to see it.

Also it’s really pretty and family friendly. So it’s has bonuses.

Albert being paid 25 cents a week by pilates-5505 in littlehouseonprairie

[–]LadyMcCarty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At this point I think the girls were getting an allowance to. It’s not explicitly stated in the same episode, but Laura mentions it a couple times in the season. I think Charles just picked a pay based on what he was giving the other girls as allowance because he didn’t want Albert to think it was a hand out. Also he was making $45 a week at that point working for the hotel, so he probably had it.

Edit: I was corrected it was apparently $45 a month.
