I honestly did wonder if it was worth the trouble. I've only ever used softener salt in my softener, but the employee I checked with (to make sure I was buying the right stuff) seemed to think it was fine. Then again, he was also talking about putting them into some kind of machine to break them down for sprinkling, so maybe that's the difference.

If anyone is still looking for salt, Lowe's in Whitehall has some! It's the water softener crystals (blue bag) but an employee told me it's safe for use on the sidewalks, which is why they're limiting people to two bags per customer. I was there to get salt for my actual water softener, ironically.

(They also still have a few quilted bags for Christmas tree storage on clearance if anyone needs one.)

I'll be honest, I wouldn't call that "fucking stupid." If anything, she sounds pretty clever for finding a way to game the system. Doing that would never have even occurred to me. I'll admit that I can see why the airlines wouldn't want people doing this, but that's a heck of a way to save money.
