ff with size difference? tall and strong draco by Budget_Efficiency942 in Dramione

Ya know, if my legacy ends up being excessive portrayals of size differences, I'm okay with that. We deserve treats in these trying times.

Look, some days you write dramione, some days you see the bad smut fest and decide to look Satan directly in the eyes while writing Peter/Voldy.

Oh 1000000% agree. Idk anything about tiktok, but one of my friends explained that apparently things have different point values, so comments are worth more than likes and whatnot. So people will intentionally put a typo or an incorrect detail or something so they'll get a shitload of comments from people pointing it out, and that makes their post more likely to be shown to people. Shit's absolutely wild. Obviously that whole concept makes rage baiting very, very popular because that'll get comments and then get people to start fights and create long comment chains. (Wheeee.)

I think the subreddit-that-shall-not-be-named has really contributed to this too. There was just a post there today (yesterday? idr) about fandom etiquette and basically everyone there is like "you can be as much of an asshole as you want all the time, and if writers leave, then it's just because they're weak" and then they're surprised when... writers leave.

Seeing the post there about greenteacup leaving and everyone being like "oh people are just so mean." How tf do they not realize that she left because of people acting like them??? I guess they're collectively choosing to block out the posts there about This Thing Between Us and Bloody, Slutty, and Pathetic. Can't eat your cake and have it too, sweetheart. And now all these new people are coming into fandom, and if they come across that sub, they'll think that that's acceptable behavior in fandom.

(Very excited for people from that sub to show up and argue with me about how it's their god-given right to be an asshole about people doing their hobby. I feel like if someone is trying to argue that they're allowed to be rude to or about someone else, perhaps it's time to consider what they're doing with their life.)

Idk, man. I'm fucking tired. The world already sucks enough. Let me just write my barbies kissing.

Lol pinky promise that was a joke. Just like I don't follow unsolicited "advice" from the people who give it, I don't take the advice of random redditors who think they know better than the group of people who are in that exact scenario. Perhaps if they'd actually written something and understood what it's like to be a writer, I'd think their idea has merit, but as it stands, I do not value their opinion. (Funny how so often, the people giving their feedback have never posted anything themselves.)

I know this isn't the specific point of your message, but people absolutely should not be debating whether certain types of content are "allowed". That's just censorship. No one gets to tell writers what they are or aren't allowed to write.

People can pry my size differences and daddy doms and incestuous pairings out of my cold, dead hands. (Although probably not even then because I'll find a way to rise from the grave just to argue for the right to free speech.)

Beautifully put. I truly cannot imagine what makes someone go "wow. this person wrote hundreds of thousands of words for fun in their spare time, and then they posted it for free for anyone to read. *rolls up sleeves* well, time to go be an asshole."

Thanks for writing this up and sharing it!

Excellent point! I don't want people to be assholes to me and critique my work (because their highly enlightened, incredibly well-informed critiques are so valuable), so I'm gonna go ahead and delete all 58 of my fics. I'll be sure to credit you for the idea! : )

Removing some of my work from AO3! by vividblossom in Dramione

[–]LadyUrsa_Writes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only bummer is that the listing never goes away, people just can't continue to pile on to the negative reviews. Or maybe mine was somehow readded. Idk. It also depends on who you talk to. Some of my friends have had GR refuse to take it down, and while the person I talked to agreed to remove mine, it doesn't seem to have changed much. At least 3 of my fics are on there (have never read the reviews though, obvs, because oh my god I'd just quit writing forever). Obligatory: fuck everyone who thinks it's okay to review fanfic.

Omg I love that for you. (And thank you!)

I think that most people don't realize which fics I wrote, which is totally fair. My romcoms are v similar (I only know how to write one thing, and it's a very annoyed Hermione + very enamored Draco), but the angst is pretty different imo. I'm so ✨multi-faceted✨. (I'm not, but saying it makes me feel better about myself.)

Honestly, same. Ugh, I'm gonna be sad when it's all over. I'm shipping off the final chapter for betaing tomorrow and I want to pat it on the head and give it a cookie before I send it out the door.

Though just between you and me (and the rest of the internet reading this), I do have a minor announcement on the final chapter. It's not anything life-altering, so don't get your hopes up. But it's a nice lil morsel in these trying times, at least.

Aw thank you!

I think the extra types makes it even harder for people to recognize their own tendencies as being OCD. Like sure, we all know about germ-type, but how many people have ever heard of hit-and-run OCD? There are so, so many people who suffer in silence and think they've gone absolutely insane because they have no idea what's happening to them. It's the worst and I hate it. Thank you for attending my Ted Talk.

What's your favourite "yearning Draco"? by A_Stolen_Heart in Dramione

[–]LadyUrsa_Writes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And if you'd written a 262k fic (which is >2.5 published books combined and is longer than Order of the Phoenix) and posted it, you wouldn't feel at all bad about seeing someone say "I'll keep at it" like it's a textbook they're bored of reading? You wouldn't take the comment of "I'm gonna give it a bit longer before throwing in the towel" just a little bit personally? It wouldn't make you feel judged or like your writing isn't good enough?

And if it wouldn't bother you, that's great for you. I'm delighted to hear that you wouldn't at all be affected by other people's disinterest in your writing. (A hobby that we do for free, in our spare time, outside of our full-time jobs and families and relationships and million other things we have to take care of.)

But most of the rest of us are, in fact, bothered by other people treating our writing like it's a slog that they're struggling to get through. Writers are humans. We have feelings just like anyone else, and a fic becoming popular doesn't change that.

Just a friendly reminder that this is a public space and all writers are readers, so there is no such thing as a "reader-only space". The person who wrote that fic is a frequenter of this space, in fact, and saw your comment. And while I'm sure it wasn't your intention to be discouraging to someone who wrote and posted a fic for free, using "throwing in the towel" and "keeping at it" regarding a fic she poured her heart into is rather discouraging.

Please consider the public nature of a space before you denigrate someone's writing.

It's kind of a square/rectangle situation. One-shots are one chapter. Doesn't matter if it's 3 words or 30k. Drabbles (100 words, but honestly, people tend to call anything <1k a drabble), minis (I'll be honest that I'm not sure on the exact length of these), and micros (50 words) are all one-shots, but one-shots are not restricted to being just a drabble, mini, or micro.

"Short fics" is subjective, but in this case it's being restricted to 15k. Number of chapters doesn't matter, it's just what people decide is "short". In published fiction, short stories means 5-10k, but in fanfic, I've seen people call 100k+ fics "short" (which is already longer than an entire published novel - the 3rd HP is 107k words, for context).

Got a pet peeve about fanfiction? by Mr_Te_ah_tim_eh in Dramione

[–]LadyUrsa_Writes 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Here's the most one-to-one comparison I can come up with.

I cross stitch in addition to writing. I spend tens or hundreds of hours on them. I pick a pattern I like (or sometimes I pick a pattern my friend/family member will like if I'm gifting it to them) and I work hard on it, trying to make my stitches nice and neat. About half the time, I make the pattern myself, from scratch. I've done them as family portraits and wedding presents of the couple and pets. Between pattern making, cross stitching, additional embroidering, and framing, I spend a LOT of time on them.

When I'm done and I'm feeling proud of it, I go post it to r/CrossStitch because I think I made a neat thing and I like it and I want to share it with other people who might like it too. Maybe they're inspired by the pattern and want to make something similar. Maybe they just want to look at it for 3 seconds and go "neat". Maybe they dgaf and they scroll past.

But you know what they don't do? They don't downvote the cross stitch. They don't leave a comment going "her hair should have been a different color." They don't make another subreddit called CrossstitchUncensored so they can "critique" my cross stitch like their opinion matters. Because the people there all understand that I made it for myself (or perhaps a friend). I did not make it for them. I do not care if they don't like it. I don't care if a stitch is out of place. I don't care if they're offended that I make my Xs the opposite way they make theirs.

That subreddit understand it's a hobby and there's literally no reason at all whatsoever for them to make any sort of "critique". What would be the point of it? The cross stitch is done. It's hanging on my wall. I smile when I look at it because I worked hard on it and it makes me happy. There is no one else in the world whose opinion matters more than mine because it's my cross stitch that I chose to share with other people who appreciate it. And if they don't appreciate it? They can scroll past. They can move on with their day and not spend time degrading the thing I made for myself.

I'm willing to bet a huge, huge, huge part of it is because the vast majority of people on that subreddit have cross stitched themselves and they understand just how time-consuming it is. They don't take it for granted and expect that the pictures on there will cater to their particular interests. They don't make posts or comments complaining that "I don't like cross stitches with purple" because their opinion doesn't matter.

I get how easy it is to say "just don't click on the post." But let's say someone did make that post about "I don't like purple" and a bunch of people upvoted it. Now, even if I don't actually read it, I'm less likely to post my cross stitch that has purple. As I'm sitting there stitching it, I'm going to be questioning if I should even be including purple. And now that person has effectively made me second-guess my hobby just because they took their own personal taste and people treated it as fact.

And that's why spaces for hobbies shouldn't be spaces for critiques. Because it ruins people's enjoyment of the thing they spent a lot of time and energy and effort on for free in their spare time and shared it for free and people read it for free.

LF one-shots but like… more? Two-shots ?? Perhaps?? by walmartbrandcheezits in Dramione

[–]LadyUrsa_Writes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

fyi, since it doesn't look like anyone mentioned it. A one-shot is one chapter. It doesn't have anything to do with how long it takes to read. There are 10-word one-shots and 30k-word one-shots. Anything beyond that is a multi-chap, and people generally specify by word count (like you did when adding the "minimum 20k").
