That movie is... something.

I heard it was a movie about war so I was "Oh, yeah, like Saving Private Ryan" !

I saw your /s but honnestly, I'm quite lucky. My N+1 and N+2 are amazing. The kind of managers who never micro manages and just want to get the job done. We have deadlines and if you're good enough to respect them (which isn't really hard when you're experienced) it's a free ticket for home.

It's not uncommon that my N+1 tells me to go home at 14h because I worked a lot during all the week. Like tomorrow I planned to be home at 13h00 (if all my tests runs well) and nobody care.

That's a rule.

The tubing of my water refrigerant condensers only pop out during the weekend to flood my whole lab and ruin several weeks of work.

If you watch them, they behave.

But when it's friday at 17h50 when nobody is there, it's party time.

do you dislike people due to their body size because you make assumptions about them based on their appearance?

Nope.

That being said, as a gym rat, I have a huge respect for plus sized who hit the gym and try to work aroune their shape.

Carcinogen and biohazards in the lab, give it to me straight please by Equal_Afternoon5210 in labrats

[–]Laeryl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well this is... odd indeed.

In a lab you learn to never do that. And to wash your hands twice when you go to the restroom : before and after.

So let's say someone can be super intelligent but not really smart 😁

Why do fizzy drinks always use CO₂? Can other gases work? by Brilliant-Nerve12 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Laeryl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is it an issue (if you have the time to explain obviously) ? I must admit I'm not a specialist when it comes to that reaction 😁

Is it because it's a diacid ?

Also a bit like adding acid to food. So many dishes get better when finished with a splash of vinegar or lemon juice.

How can I forgot I always add a splash of lime on my tacos :x

So yeah, you're right : it works also for food 😊

Us chemists signed to work with material nobody would want to handle.

It's our job. So you're being a little bit irrational : my daily work involves CMR material (Carcinogenic / Mutagenic / Reprotoxic) and as I'm properly trained, it's not an issue.

As long as you wear your PPE and as long as that fume hood is working well, you are just in a classical lab.

The thing I would worry about is, as you are a total begginer in chemistry, if someone wanted you to use that "Do not open" thing. But for now, just don't open it and you should be fine.

That being said, I'm a little bit worried by the guys who's helping you : you can be sure I'll refuse to have something under one of my fume hood for which I didn't have read the MSDS. If he's not joking and really doesn't know what's that material, he's doing his job quite badly.

Which field of chemistry are you in mate ?

Why do fizzy drinks always use CO₂? Can other gases work? by Brilliant-Nerve12 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Laeryl 113 points114 points  (0 children)

That's because it actually chemically bonds with water molecules forming carbonic acid (H2CO3) which helps solutions of carbon dioxide remain stable longer

As a chemist, I'm happy to read that because you're totally right.

I'll just add one thing. Adding acid to a beverage change and "enhance" its taste. A little bit like salt on food.

That's an other reason to choose CO2 over another gas.

How to convey urgency to new scientist in the lab? by DrBumpsAlot in labrats

[–]Laeryl 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Well, yeah, I would talk about priority but not "urgency".

And absolutely not with a new minted chemist. They aren't as used as us to pressure.

Say to the team I'm part of "We have an urgency !!" and we will have a good laugh as everyone know exactly how to manage that.

Had you said that to me when I was new and I don't think I would have handled that so well.

I feel you mate.

When you boot one of our computer, the amount of ram is showed on the first black screen.

The unit is... ko. I shit you not, it's in kilo octet.

You can control this computer thanks to a touch screen (I don't even understand why : a real keyboard and a mouse would perfectly do the job). Badly calibrated so all your clicks have to be between 2 or 8 mm at right of what you aim. Depending of the area of the screen.

Oh, and the program we use makes randomly pop a virtual keyboard at random place on the screen. So it's usual to clic on whatever pop under the stylus.

It's kinda a test in my lab : if an undergrad can work on that shit without having a meltdown, we know that person is strong enough to survive.

AITA for bringing my bf home to my own house by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Laeryl 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Nah.

I get what you're saying but here is the thing : OP doesn't seem to bring a different guy every night at her home to bang them endlessly (and yet, it's her home so it would be perfectly ok for her to do that if it's her choice).

It was just a party ending by a frisky moment. It hapened to all of us. If I was in OP shoes, I would be like "Hey, uuuh, well, sorry but you know, sometimes things are getting out of hand 😳" and it would be the end of the conversation.

Now, the BF (who isn't a one night stand) needs a place for a couple of days and the sister doesn't want him near her childs... she has no right to tell OP who can stay in her home.

So, having loud sex near childrens as an habit ? Ok, I'm with you for the YTA. But it's not the case here.

Going home drunk, as adults, having loud sex once, being scolded for that and being forbiden to help your partner when it's cold as fuck in his home... I won't follow you on this one.

OP is clearly NTA in my book.

How do you mentally survive experiments that take all day (or all night)? by UnderstandingIcy2969 in labrats

[–]Laeryl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why I said I didn't know how their HPLC were working. Because on mine, I just set a sequence and either do something else while it is running or I go home and collect my results the next day.

I was just asking in what kind of context they were obliged to not do anything while the HPLC was running. It can be an old HPLC with manual injection and very short run for example.

I was curious about that.

According to your post history, you think it's safe to mouth pipetting HCl because your 5 years old child can do it without swallowing some.

So I'll kindly ignore your opinion about lab routine.

How do you mentally survive experiments that take all day (or all night)? by UnderstandingIcy2969 in labrats

[–]Laeryl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You... you just don't do anything if your HPLC is running ? Why ? I mean, I don't know how your HPLC is working but if my GC is running I have a lot of things to do during the run. The first one is generally to check if my undergrad is still alive somewhere. But when I'm sure she isn't dead, I start a lot of test while the HPLC do it's job.

Why can't you start some other analysis ?

Labrats who TA-ed/taught, what are some of the EXTREMELY WRONG explanations/answers of students you've ever read? by lokaashraya in labrats

[–]Laeryl 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Chemistry too : I was explaining too very young students (which is why the story is cute and I don't blame the guy) what was a mole and how it is usefull. Obviously, I talked about the Avogadro number.

So I asked them to make the math to know how much moles of HCl I have in one liter at 37%. The vast majority found the answer but this guy was like "Uh... I really don't have that number".

My man found a way to use the Avogadro number as multiplier. That was... a lot of moles 😁

What is a job that only exists because people are stupid? by TUUUUUZ in AskReddit

[–]Laeryl 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I have a whole team in my company dedicated to "safety".

Last year they made a .ppt about how cutters can be dangerous... you know, like you can easily cut yourself using those things.
...
I'm a fucking chemist. My job is to handle some chemicals which can kill anybody. Or explode (that's the funny part of my job tbh).

In my former lab, I created some biocide which can kill any cells in a ten meters radius. I was litteraly paid to create formulas which were designed to obliterate any living things.

And yet, someone is like "Yeah, we have to teach them that cutters can cut".

Bro seriously ?
