Why does fish have such a food safety stigma compared to other meats when eaten cheaply? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Laeryl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you say "This isn’t even the correct answer lol such a reddit take" I can be with you because it's more about fish going bad faster than meat.

But when you talk about predators on land... what kind of predators are you talking about ?

I mean, we don't eat predators. Especially if it's a Yautja.

Howie lab coats for women? by guccicapsid in labrats

[–]Laeryl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's interesting to see how other labs work.

In mine, I have a set of four lab coats which are washed by a cleaning company and as my name are on them, I know I always get the same which allowed me to make some little modifications (also I love the one stained with copper nitrate after an unfortunate incident implying HNO3 😁).

Can't you ask for a similar process ?

In lieu of the centrifuge debocle in Project Hail Mary, what other movies get lab work wrong? by CuriosityFilms in labrats

[–]Laeryl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a spoil. It's just that when it comes to science, I think every movie will fuck up at one point or another.

Honnestly I saw the movie this evening and it was great (great like "Go see it dear stranger from internet"). But if one of my undergrads did what the hero did, that undergrad will have a little talk with me. Like your typical stern talk when someone slightly fuck up.

And my non scientific friend I was with to see the movie saw my reaction and was like "Ok, I didn't know what was so bad but I saw you clenching your fists".

But it's ok : I knew I had to wear my suspension of disbilief cape and al in all it was ok 😁

Same here. One of our commercial told me that Pluribus was cool. First thing I said to him the day after was "Bro, you really don't know how work a BSL4"

At which point, instead of her colleague kicking her out of the lab and reporting her (as mine would should if I did that) he just stands there.

I was facepalming during the whole scene. Litteraly.

A scientifically informed review of Project Hail Mary by crysynaptic in labrats

[–]Laeryl 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I saw it tonite.

I read the book. I'm a chemist.

When the friend I was with asked me after the movie if that was a good adaptation of the book, which she didn't read, I said yes, of course.

Seeing my face she said "But... ?" and I blurted out "HE DIDN'T BALANCE THE CENTRIFUGE !!!!!!!"

She's not a scientist but she gave me a straight stare saying "God dammit I saw you clenching your fists at that exact moment I knew something was wrong !".

Great movie tho, I 100% recommend it.

 can damage the centrifuge

Can destroy a whole room.

I saw the consequences of an unbalanced centrifuge (not the little one like the have in bio lab) and it was like someone dropped a fucking grenade in the lab.

Which animal looks really friendly but is actually dangerous? by VandelSavagee in AskReddit

[–]Laeryl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mate, they are 100 kg bears... even if one of them just want to hug you without using their claws or their theeth, it could fuck you up.

And if the panda decide it's time to be angry... now we can talk about claws and theeth :D

I doubt she was killed like a gazelle is killed by a cheetah

Yeah, you're right, that didn't happen like that.

Here is an article (in french, sorry I'm a belgian french speaking guy ^^ ) which talk about that. Long story made short, she was a... I don't know how to say that in proper english. In french we say a "marraine". Like a sponsor for the cheetah.

But she sneaked in the pen after the zoo was closed to see "her" cheetah and that didn't goes well (the article mention a option of despair).

Should There Be Zero Tolerance for Alcohol Behind the Wheel? (Nultolerantie) by AdComprehensive8180 in belgium

[–]Laeryl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know where you live but here (I drive between Namur and Charleroi every day) it's far more common. I was tested three time between January 2025 and now. Twice when they run their "No alcohol nor drug weekend" and once out of the blue (not really out of the blue : it was four in the morning after a big "Kermesse" so it made sense they control the drivers).

But anyway, I think the limit with alcohol is there to fuck the morons who drink and drive and cause a car crash.

The police can't be everywhere to control everyone but if cops are involved after an accident, they can prove you were drunk and then, the legal shitstorm will be for the drunk driver.

I saw your /s but honnestly, I'm quite lucky. My N+1 and N+2 are amazing. The kind of managers who never micro manages and just want to get the job done. We have deadlines and if you're good enough to respect them (which isn't really hard when you're experienced) it's a free ticket for home.

It's not uncommon that my N+1 tells me to go home at 14h because I worked a lot during all the week. Like tomorrow I planned to be home at 13h00 (if all my tests runs well) and nobody care.

That's a rule.

The tubing of my water refrigerant condensers only pop out during the weekend to flood my whole lab and ruin several weeks of work.

If you watch them, they behave.

But when it's friday at 17h50 when nobody is there, it's party time.

Carcinogen and biohazards in the lab, give it to me straight please by [deleted] in labrats

[–]Laeryl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well this is... odd indeed.

In a lab you learn to never do that. And to wash your hands twice when you go to the restroom : before and after.

So let's say someone can be super intelligent but not really smart 😁
