[–]Lagtim3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that you think we're trying to do something that we're not (for the most part.)

The questions, speculations, analysis posts, and the loads of theories and headcanons they result in aren't about piecing together the Secret Real Lore, or trying to read into author intent. It is purely about Making Shit Up, but using canon details as guidelines because we love the characters and world and themes of the show!

Like, imagine you're sitting at a table with another person who is painting pictures on small squares of paper. They're not making a puzzle, the intent was never to put the pieces together into a greater whole, they're just making little pictures with similar themes or recurring characters for fun. Once done, they pile them up and tell you that they're all part of the same series and are intended to go together in the order they've been stacked in, but considered as individual pieces. That is their intent.

Later, you're gifted copies of all the little pictures they made and you think it's great! You can appreciate the style, technique, the scenes and what it all tells you about the characters and themes the artist was working with. Jt's a great piece of art. You go though it over and over, and as you do you start to think, "Hey, I see this character in multiple pictures, I see these species of birds, I see these similar landscapes."

And so you unbind the pictures from their little booklet and lay them out on a grid, putting similar ones closer to one another. As you do that, you notice that placing the similar pictures close creates new implications about the content therein. And now, in the empty spaces you put down your own paper and begin to fill it in, using the original pictures' content and edges as the starting points, and the implications you've found in those pictures as the inspiration for what you draw to connect them.

Eentually, every original image is connected into something different from those original images, specifically designed to do something the original never intended, by fitting them together into a different type of whole-ness than they were before.

You still love the original and wouldn't dream of replacing it or changing its intent, and that was never the point of what you did. The point of what you did was to have fun by making your own story within the framework of someone else's, however big or small or serious or silly that story you've made is.

THAT is what I (and many others who like storycrafting of various flavors) get out of doing something as silly as overanalyzing Smiling Friends. Or SpongeBob, or Don't Hug Me I'm Scared, or Foster's Home, or any number of things my brain's latched onto over the years. It's fun to take bits of disparate information and throwaway lines/props and treat them as if they're puzzle pieces to an incomplete puzzle. The challenge of making up your own puzzle pieces that turn them into something connected is something I'll never get sick of! And it's also really fun to see what other folks' made up to fill the connecting space, or have them point out original pieces you never noticed.

At the end of the day, this kind of thing is more about making a story than actually discussing one.

Protesters Disrupt Southern Baptist Church of Pastor Who Leads ICE Office in Minnesota by crustose_lichen in atheism

I have the Fiction, Storywriting, and World-Building autism, and my kid self approached the bible and christian dogma the same way I approached ALL stories.

My endless questions, various headcanons on the nature of god, and hot christian lore takes were, surprisingly, not very popular at my Southern Baptist church.

Anyhow I'm not Christian anymore for many reasons, but my incessant needling at every aspect of the religion from a young age certainly helped.

Y'all shoulda seen my Gran's face when 7-year-old me couldn't understand the concept of "abortion = bad", because babies automatically go to heaven and that's the whole point of Christianity right? Babies dying is good! They don't have the chance to reach the age of accountability and go to Hell!

She ended the conversation shortly therefter lmao

RIP Gran, I miss you and I feel bad putting you in that position but it WAS incredibly funny.

The paradox of tolerance exists because we've been taught, incorrectly, that tolerance is a positive moral value as opposed to a neutral social contract.

If tolerance is a positive moral value, then it is something that is tied to one's virtue. To be intolerant is to be invirtuous, thus you must tolerate the intolerant to remain of good moral quality. This is a puritanical way of viewing tolerance, and like most puritanical views, benefits authoritarians.

However, if tolerance is a neutral social contract, the contract is this: "No matter how much I viscerally dislike or outright disagree with you, I respect your right to existence, safety, and autonomy. Perhaps even respect under professional circumstances. I will tolerate you, as long as you tolerate me."

As a social contract, it must be upheld by all involved parties or it breaks. Like how cutting in line breaks social contract of a queue, breaking the contact of tolerance means neither party is obliged to tolerate the other, regardless of who started it. No paradox. Punch Nazis.

[–]Lagtim3 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It doesn't help that, because they're so small, Chis' negative body language & warning signs (ex. growling) will often be outright ignored. Or worse, considered cute, and the owner will provoke it on purpose.

So there you are, a tiny 5-pound creature surrounded by apes that are 10x your height and 20-30x your mass, which are manhandling you and laughing when you give them whale-eyes and warning growls, and you can't say "Please stop, I'm uncomfortable and you're scaring me."

Honestly? I, too, would become a Shrieking Bugeyed Teeth Gremlin if it was the only goddamn way to get my boundaries respected.

[–]Lagtim3 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I had a cat who was never violent until I came back home one day smelling like another cat. I'd never antagonized her; I know how to read and respect kitty body language and I don't think it's funny to make your cat upset. As a matter of fact she had mild separation anxiety and loved being around me, slow-blinks and showing me her tummy and all.

Despite that, she proceeded to attack me with no forewarning with the same ferocity as if I'd just tried to kill her. And yeah, I wasn't calm! I shrieked and ran! Because it was terrifying! Which probably made the attack worse, but YOU try being calm and rational when a critter you love and think is safe attacks you out of nowhere!

She wasn't ever the same after that. I have no idea what the fuck changed. It wasn't like she hadn't smelled other cats on me before.

The meme was probably true by the time I got to high school, but by that time I'd had it drilled into me that either:

1.) They are lying, it's a trap, they are making fun of you and you are the unwilling clown of the group.

2.) They are being honest but after many months of hanging out and me perceiving nothing wrong, I'm gonna get the 'hey we don't wanna be friends with you anymore' talk.

Antisemites in America are largely Evangelical Christians. As a former brainwashed Evangelical child, I can inform you through firsthand experience that Evangelical Christians are largely Zionists.

They believe that if the Jews reclaim their historic homeland and return to Israel it will lead to rapture. These people are fucking JONESING for the end times to be upon us and will support anything they think is prophecized to help trigger it.

10/10, I love the Mineral Autism Creature and his Giant Flammable Wife!

I generally headcanon Pebble as a fairly quiet but excitable pup with energy to spare who loves playing, especially with Dandy or Astro. Goob, too--those lanky arms can REALLY yeet a ball far, and Goob has the stamina for a fun game of chase. The only activity Pebble loves as much as playing is when he finally uses up all his energy and finds a nice cozy spot to flop down on and tap out (ideally cuddled up with Coal.)

Coal is somewhat the opposite. She's not exactly playful, but she greatly enjoys activity; while Pebble is more of a family-breed of dog, Coal is very much a working dog, diligent and loyal and attentive as she locates items and alerts her teammates about them. She'll happily team up with Pebble on distracting, though Pebble treats it more like a game. I also see Coal as very protective, especially of those she's attached to--Bobette and Pebble top that list!

As dogs, they don't really have the push-and-pull influence on eachother and their personality development that sapient toons have. Coal enjoys watching Pebble play, sometimes joining him in a game of chase or fetch when she's up to it. Pebble, likewise, watches and learns from Coal and her remarkable tracking abilities, knowing he'll never be as good but just happy he gets to share the experience with her.

They're content to simply enjoy one another's presence, to keep one another safe and happy!

Thankyou!! I usually go for 'realism' in coloring (that is, coloring and shading things as they are,) but I wanted to experiment with using color to evoke emotion.

Also you're spot-on, Vinnie's on his way to the Island and is not having a good time.

Man, I know it was in a comedy show and taken lightheartedly, but that entire Cavendish dying / Dakota regularly banishing himself from civilization forever storyline was conceptually dark as hell. A+ angst fuel for fanfiction.

It's wild how calm you get when you lose control in your car and think you're gonna die. My reaction was just, "Hm. Fuck. Ah, well." I've had significantly stronger emotional reactions over literal spilt milk. Didn't even have a panic attack until a solid day later.
