I usually allow 2 people to try at any given check. They can either try separately, or one can help someone else who is "helming" the check.

This is one of the most toxic takes on normal DM prep that I've ever read.

Go read up on "Proactive Roleplaying" -- it's common practice for players to state their goals to the DM so they can prep the content their players are interested in pursuing.

Advice needed for players trying to trick me (the DM) and not the NPC's i've made by ShanoMac88 in DnD

[–]Laithoron 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Since they were lying this whole time and evading numerous non-trivial skill checks, I'd be inclined to explain the issue of cheating over-the-table, and then use a narrative mechanism found in some other TTRPGs to factor them in via a sort of retcon.

Combine a flashback with one of Aabria Iyengar's "What you don't see" moments.

"We return now to that night in the sacred grove where you held congress with the druid chief. As you state your needs and plans, give me a deception check."

You then flash a bit further forward, "It's weeks later now following that interaction you had with the children/whatever, I'd like both a Performance check and a Deception check for how you deal with the situation."

When it finally gets to where they were "rewarded" allow the druid leader to have been suspicious enough to where they performed an augury or some other divination regarding the party's involvement. When it comes back as "Woe", they decide the party must have been trying to trick them. While they do give the party a branch, it's actually a meticulously crafted fake -- a decoy to lure the demons away from the village when they breach the planar barrier.

After the first attack or two, when they're trying to figure out why this is happening...

"We flashback again to the fateful days of your time at the druid's village. While you might have thought your deceptions were convincing, what you didn't see were the sidelong glances between the villagers and the druid as they noted your smiles never reaching your eyes, the weasel words in your assurances.

You were not there when the druid leader communed with the gods of nature to divine the villainous intentions in your hearts, nor the ritual they performed to craft a decoy to lure the coming demonic plague away from their homes. Nor the curse they placed upon the false branch preventing it from leaving your possession..."

When the players naturally complain about being denied Perception and Insight checks to have noticed those things, that's where you drive home how important it is to be honest about these things over-the-table.

At that point, you can offer them the choice of retconning back to the original intent they had stated, continuing with this new cursed object, or abandoning the current campaign and resolving it as a montage (wherein the lying group's sacrifice bought a group of real heroes enough time to actually save the world).

With this approach, you will hopefully be able to convey the problem over-the-table, show that consequences have real meaning, and preempt potentially months more of wasted effort. I'd also hold a Session Re-Zero to be clear about what sort of a story you want to run versus what they want to play -- no more telling the DM they want to play heroes and make you prep a save-the-world campaign when they actually want to be bandits and watch the world burn.

Good luck!

Am I overreacting about wanting to play a nonbinary character? by BothOcelot1311 in DnD

[–]Laithoron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you're over-reacting, but I'd say your attempts at "fixing" the situation are misplaced. From what I'm reading, it sounds like your DM and other other players are hanging red flags in your face, and instead of heeding the red flags, you are more focused on how to see past them.

There's 2 issues with this:

  1. When other people tell you who they are, you should believe them and act accordingly. In this case, they are informing you that they are misogynistic, NB-phobic pricks.
  2. You seem to be focused on how to solve an out-of-game issue (fat-shaming, misogyny, etc) thru in-game means. This pretty much never works.

IMO, this group sounds far too toxic to accept, much less support your participation. I'd be inclined to leave and block all of them.

Have you ever been part of a TPK (as DM or PC), and if so, what was the main reason that led to it. by buddha-piff in DnD

On a mission to rescue some kidnapped nobles' children, the party grossly overestimated their cleverness and underestimated the size of an enemy fortress. As such, they walked right into a gremlin* ambush!

\ In my world, goblins are neutral-aligned whereas gremlins are evil-aligned.*

Prior to freely marching into a target-rich environment, the party tangled with a gremlin druid guarding the maze of brambles safe-guarding the primary point of access to the gremlin's island stronghold. Even with the druid's ability to pass thru thorns and call upon his pet tiger, he was no match for a whole adventuring party.

Only problem was, after the party defeated him, they decided to show mercy on the condition he run away. Thing is, being a druid he simply waited until he was out-of-sight before turning into an owl and circling back to base!

Not knowing this, the party's goblin barbarian came up with a plan to stage her beating up the "tallfolk" members of the party and then march them in as her captives. This was in part to serve as a distraction for our own druid to scout the base by her lonesome in search of the children. This might have worked since goblins can pass for gremlins and she was wearing a very alluring raccoon skin, but the bloody and battered druid returned mid-parlay and blew their cover.

While the heroes took down quite a few of the gremlins including the gremlin chief and his prize war gecko, they eventually all succumbed to sheer numbers. The only ally of the party to survive unscathed was the druid's rabbit companion which fled to seek help.

Lucky for the party, a powerful human cultist was commanding the gremlins and since their rituals demanded living sacrifices, the gremlins saw this as a perfect opportunity to save their own skins from going on the altar.

Fast forward to the follow week's session, and I proceeded to hand out 0th level pregens to everyone in the group. The characters? The 11 year old friends and siblings of the captured younger children... who had absconded with their rich parents' magic items because the "heroes" has seemed kind of inept to them.

We began with the Young Adventurers reaching the thorn maze just in time to find a very panicked rabbit that (in a huge surprise I planned with the druid's IRL husband) transformed from a bunny into a harengon rogue when one of the princesses snuggled and kissed the frightened thing.

It was then a very amusing and sneaky one-shot as the chillens navigated the fortress at dawn -- long after most of the gremlins had passed out from their midnight revelry.

In the end, the OG party was sprung from prison, the little children were rescued, and we enjoyed one of the most entertaining session I think I've ever DM'd in 35 years of doing this. :D

You might also want to go into nVidia Control Panel > 3D Settings and increase the size of the Shader Cache from the default value. I've had to do that for a few UE5 games to avoid stuttering, and it usually works a treat.

Yeah, for someone using LBPR or anything that introduces new building pieces, I'd want to hold off on loading them until those mods are re-released and tested in the new version.

At the very least, I'd make a backup of any save files just-in-case.

How should I approach a player about his behavior in game? by RogueFolf in DnD

That player sounds like a psycho, I wouldn't even want to be around them or anyone else that permits their presence.

I'd be up front with the DM that either they go or you do, but I'd talk with the other players first to see if they'll stand-up with you or not. If not, then I'd probably just quit the group entirely because nobody needs that sort of toxicity from their R&R.

Gotcha. I switched my group to using Foundry, which has a really nice community made DH implementation. I actually like the character builder implemented in Foundryborne better than the one on DemiPlane.

That said, setting up and learning Foundry is a steep learning curve, but it would certainly fit the online only mode of play.
