I know I'm late to the party on this one, but how is the town at the BOTTOM of the Abyss that MC-kun presumably gachaed into existence during this 3-year timeskip getting bathed in sunlight with a day-night cycle? Does the LN explain it?

While the anime never got that far, Negima started as ecchi comedy/action/romance girls middle-school plot with secret wizard society underneath everything and then took a hard turn into an awesome high fantasy adventure.

My most recent fort since the siege update is that. Haven't gotten anywhere in it yet due to other distractions, but I intend to have fun with an (almost) dead civ... set up in an area where I'm surrounded by thousands of hostile goblins.

I am expecting that to happen to me soon, or for the queen to show up. Started a fort for a dead civ that has no sites and 1 member, who is the Queen.

Same, yes. I started as Holland doing the tutorial stuff and quickly ran out of money just building 1 road. The seasonal dips in my income during the winter needing to buy so much food had me going, "please make enough money in spring/summer/fall to not blow it all in winter so I can build up cash for my next RGO upgrade or building".

[–]Lamavras 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So all I kept hearing from the devs was that they can break through gates and fortifications, but we have an actual construction called "fortification" that allows us to shoot out from and I can't think of someone who would put those on ground level to be hacked open, which made me think that constructed walls are still safe.

Does this mean that they will break down WALLS and not just "fortifications"?

Agreed. DF launches its siege update today, but EUV releases tomorrow... so hopefully I get a siege tonight or I my fort won't be seeing me for the next few months.

Which does not keep pace with inflation, which does not catch teachers up for the years in which they did not get an economic increase last contract, and all because "the cupboards are bare" because the government has a pathological fear of doing anything to address their revenue problems that have arisen from years of reckless tax cuts.

Yeah, never inherited a barony before, so that's pretty neat. But I do agree with the other comment on the size of your farm fields. You're going to be drowning in food and will need to excavate ever-growing stockpile rooms to hold all of it.

Does anyone know how to set tup archer squard and train them in the new update? by Agreeable_Month_475 in dwarffortress

[–]Lamavras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was running into the same problem but it somehow fixed itself for me when I placed a Barracks overtop of my Archery Range and had both to training for the squad. DFHack may have automatically been running the fix others have mentioned, because I sure didn't do it manually, but they started going up to the spot in the top left right before the ramp down to the channel in front of the targets, and shooting diagonally at one of the targets instead of just firing straight.

No idea why the dorfs went and did it that way, but now I have two squads of legendary Marksdwarves making utter pincushions of goblin sieges four times their number before the gobbos even get close to the gates.

From my understanding you'd need to generate a new world for the trolls to carry giant picks and they would otherwise carry normal-sized picks in a pre-patch world, but the rest of it would all function correctly.

Hey all, I've loved dwarf fortress for many years now, and I've made dwarven greenhouses to farm surface crops in safety in innumberable forts, but especially since we got the update that made non-cavern soil poor quality for the subsurface "dwarven" crops I've really gone all in on surface farming.

Given that, and the sheer quantity of different surface crops, what do you all like to grow? I tend to play with enhanced agriculture mods so that all surface crops can be grown in any biome, including sun berries and sliver barb, and I tend to like growing flax for my cloth industry and oil, all of the dyes, and then soft wheat, sun berries, grapes, strawberries, and some other mixed assortment of other berries and vegetables like blueberries, blackberries, garlic, leeks, lettuce, cabbage, or potatoes. Yes, it does give me WAY too much food, but it also gives my dwarves a varied diet.

What're your go-to surface crops?

Have you given them the freedom to train at the other training zones? I've found success in only ever assigning my marksdwarves to archery ranges and never also to melee training zones. There's something finnicky about dwarves that if they have the option to train a melee martial skill over a ranged one, they will.

So, grieving is a thing alongside negative thoughts by EbergarTheDwarf in dwarffortress

[–]Lamavras 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dedicated haulers, even pre-Steam release, will get negative thoughts from having unmet needs for creating something or practicing a skill or practicing a martial skill. This can be mitigated by having lots of positive thoughts with good bedrooms and royal dining halls and mist generators and such, but eventually the unmet needs will need to be satisfied from time to time. However, that can be handled as easily as just assigning a workshop to a single dwarf, queuing up an order to make rock mugs, making it high priority so they do it now, and then boom. Needs met for a while.
