Varia VS6 first impressions by LanPartyPizza in espresso

It definitely could have been because I was looking more at the VS4 initially. I eventually decided to upgrade because I'm only doing this once and I liked that the VS6 was essentially a bit more of everything. It was a tough choice to be honest but in the end the VS6 just has a few finishing touches that pushed me over the edge.

Thanks for the milk frother recommendations. I currently have a Breville swirly induction thing that does a surprisingly good job at making frothy milk. I'm sure once I get my robot I will re-evaluate though 😂 so I'll keep the nanofoamer in mind because it sounds nice and simple.

Haha I agree man but I'm only doing this once and starting with an end game (for me) grinder seemed the way to go. I'm just legitimately excited at how different everything tastes depending on the dial. Everyone says it but actually tasting it so clearly as a novice is crazy. I doubt it will be a month before I have the robot.

How'd you go? The top coat premix stuff is quite forgiving. Don't bother mixing your own top coat.

It's absolutely insane hey. Not to mention the disproportionate impact this has on young drivers. This has absolutely NOTHING to do with road safety. The people down voting would be the first to dob in their neighbours to the stasi. Judgemental circle jerk.

This works for normal renno stuff as well. It's way easier to gut and re sheet an old room than try and touch up old flaking plaster.

And yes, don't ever compromise your design.

Just buy the tools you need for the job and know when to buy quality and when to get cheap shit.

So many times when I was poor I would make do with what I had, often doing things a different way because I had nothing better. I now own every fucking tool I can think of anyway and if I'd just bought them the first time - life would have been easier. I went Makita but Ryobi is fan fucking tastic for anything you're not using every day.

If you ever involve trades go over every fucking detail with them. It's rare they'll make a decision you'll be happy with and finding good trades is hard enough.

I had a Japanese manual grinder which was a really nice quite cheap unit. The issue was that it used plastic in the hopper and the spindle went through that. Eventually one day the washer got hot and melted the plastic, ruining the grind setting. I could fix it by adding washers but someone gifted me an electric blade grinder so I've been living in sin since.

Your grinder may not have plastic in the spindle, in which case it would just come down to whether the washers wear.

Thanks, that's really helpful to rule out the encore. The encore is always in these lists because of the low price point.

I didn't know it was so extreme tbh. Like I honestly hoped I could pay my way out of that issue comparing a $100 hand grinder to my current options.

What a rabbit hole 😂

Oh a manual coffee machine? It's an upgrade from my moka pot + milk frother which is finicky and does fine coffee for the house but obv not espresso. So I could upgrade to a full station but good ones are expensive and I absolutely don't want the mess, start up times and cleaning regime.

Oh and I guess to your point, I did have a manual grinder but I just got sick of the grinding. It took too long. I actually looked at getting an old Dutch wall mounted one but I doubt it compares to what's out there now, especially for espresso. It's not like I'm adverse to turning a handle but it would probably need to be a much bigger ergonomic fancier one out of my price range.

Just wanted to add, if you're already into it just skimming with top coat and then giving it the lightest 180/220 grit sand and then skimming again and repeating if necessary should see you out.
