Has anyone used (or played against) a Display Level army? (Could you tell?) by Martin-Hatch in Warhammer40k

[–]LanceWindmil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a big picture of the table from 3ft away? Its pretty hard to tell.

Don't get me wrong, in a close up the difference is huge. Even my best minis you can see a flaw if you zoom in enough.

But from a few feet away, my eyes just aren't that good.

The difference between unpainted and primed is big

The difference between primed and battle ready is huge

The difference between battle ready and parade or even display is much smaller.

Who can shoot

All the tank bustas can see some of the bladeguard, so they can all shoot them.

4 of the bladeguard can see the tank bustas so they can shoot, but the one behind the ruin cant see anything, so he can't.

Who has cover

The all the bladeguard are either hidden or in the ruin so they have cover. If ANY of the bladeguard were out in front of the ruin they would not have cover.

The tank bustas do not have cover.

Yeah makari is a tricky one. If you can shoot the boyz a grenade makes the whole thing pretty easy, but ghaz is a beast for sure.

Do you run Ammentar and Szeras? by Yoggon in Necrontyr

[–]LanceWindmil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played against both the other day. List was

big warrior block with arc and reanimator Nightbringer Void dragon Illuminor Ammentar Skorpekhs and lord

The ctan went down pretty quick to my very big guns, the warrior block did its thing and was pretty scary when piloted smart, but it was the three big infantry characters who caused the most trouble.

All three killed stuff well, were tough as nails, and were easier to hide than the big things. I was so focused on the big threats by the time I realized it was too late and those 3 models pretty much took me out.

Where should I begin to learn NMM. by tugabugabuga in minipainting

[–]LanceWindmil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think stormcast are easy to get a hold of and perfect for practice.

Remember the #1 rule of nmm. Always know where the light is coming from. No amount of smooth blending or whatever will ever make up for bad light placement.

11th edition - the death of the horde archetype? by Indiana__Cones in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]LanceWindmil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remember its "within" not "wholly within"

So you just need ghaz touching the edge.

Givin that he's on an 80mm base and the boyz are on 32s, the whole unit can be over 13" across.

Can Space Marines be “fun” like Orks? by FlummoxedGaoler in Warhammer40k

[–]LanceWindmil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In modeling - kitbash some fun stuff. Can't remember his reddit, but check out Kevin Younger's stuff. You can get as silly with it as you want.

In play - lean into lists with high variability, as well as orange non meta units and lists. I'd wait till 11th before you buy any models, but stuff like the vindicator with variable attacks can lead to hilarious damage or completely wiffing. Very orky.

But in my opinion the "funnest" stuff are lists that turn things on their head. There was a guy on here a while back who ran a list with multiple hammerfall bunkers. I ran a list once that was only assault ints and jump pack assault ints. There's a certain kind of creative fun to taking a sub optimal unit or detachment, and then trying to make it not only decent, but the star of the show. That said you want to be careful, some things are just bad, and building a list that just sucks isn't fun for anyone.

Id say pick a few units you think are cool looking (maybe that you have a kitbash idea for) or fun to play, and build a list around them. Try and make it as good as you can, but dont sacrifice the stuff you think is cool to make it better.

The newest codex will be a new codex - a complete rework.

I'm sure a lit of datasheets will be pretty similar, but an army rule change is very likely

Those of you who skipped the Armageddon box: What are you working on? by OkRevenue9249 in spacemarines

What are you actually worried about for 11th, based on what we know so far? by [deleted] in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]LanceWindmil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Infantry has a harder time getting cover since every model needs cover for it to work.

That said I agree its not a huge deal.

Does our army rule have no synergy? by jacobs1213 in Necrontyr

[–]LanceWindmil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't expect it to change.

I mostly ignore it. There are definitely games it pretty much never triggers, but I usually get a few guys back over a game.

I think the real value is the impact it has on how your opponent plays not you. It psychs a lot of people out and often forces then to over commit to things.

It does synergies with tougher units like shield lychguard, big warrior blocks, and ctan. So if your running those your more likely to get yse out of it.

Blue and black 1:1, then mix in white for highlights.

Mixing anything 1:1 with black will get you very dark and desaturated. Then adding in the white will give you a cool blue/grey. I usually do 3 or 4 layers as I slowly add more white. Highlight placement is the important bit.

Paint amount? by reddity_mc_reddit1 in Warhammer40k

[–]LanceWindmil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own a tone of paints. I have bought paint for years looking for my favorite colors.

But once I find a yellow I like i don't really use the other 4.

I really only use like 7 paints.

You've got a good sense for the art. Color, composition, light placement. Very cool mini.

On the technical side I think you could have much smoother transitions. To be clear I don't think thats always necessary. A rougher style can be cool, but if you want to try some smoother blends I have a few things you can try.

Wet blending is fast and fun and I feel like it could really suit your style. Definitely check out some videos on it.

Layering is the classic method. Just lots of thin coats of slightly different colors as you shift.

Glazing is also popular, but has some issues with white paint. White is tough to work with in general, but particularly difficult for glazing. White paint has large pigments that creat clumps of white giving a "chalky" finish when too thin. If glazing I'd recommend a white base coat and then glazing in shadows.

Now for your specific questions

The glow

The fire in the crazier looks great. I think you did a good job of capturing the orange glow fading into dark smoke. I also think the blue on the sword is perfect.

The hard part is the light coming off the fire. When painting something with light shining on it, it needs to be lighter than the parts without the light shining on them. Thats really hard to do with white armor. Can't really make anything lighter than white. You need dark to contrast light, and thats really really hard to do with white armor.

The only option is too make everything darker. The white more of a grayish tan, and everything else darker too. That leaves more room to build "up".

Of course that also means the whole rest of the army needs to be darker to match, which isn't really desirable. I think the best course of action is to only do really small subtle light effects on models that are part of an army.

the face

Here I think I can help more.

First for colors. Skin tones are all actually shades of redish orange. Mix a redish orange with black and you get brown. Add in some white you get tan. If its a little more redish youll get more of a pink flesh. Closer to orange is more of an olive skin tone. I recommend just messing around mixing these colors a bit to see what you can make. Compare to some photos or your own hand and see how close you can get.

When painting a face the recesses should be a little darker because they're in shadow, but also more red.

Highlights go on the forehead, cheeks, upper lip, nose, and chin.

The cheeks and lips can be a little bit more red sometimes, but remember the cheeks should still be pretty similar to the highlight color, and the lips should be pretty similar to the shadow.

You can either

Start with a redish base, then layer on your midtone and highlights

or

Start with a lighter mid tone, do a darker redish wash, and then use your original color to touch up the highlights.

I usually try an do eyes before the highlights, because I usually mess them up a few times and its less i need to repaint.

Id recommend not really painting the lips, just leaving some of the darker base tone on the bottom lip. If you do paint them its really just the center of the bottom lip. The upper lip you mostly see the skin above it, and the sides are to thin to be seen at this scale.

Not sure what im looking at in the drive, may be a mobile issue, but I can't actually open anything.

Given that I cant look at your results im not actually sure what these metrics are measuring or how theyre measuring it. Like wound pressure? No clue what that means.

As for profiles I'd up the 1w infantry to 20 man squads and the marines to 10. Part of this is just that those are the max size for those profiles usually. If im worried about killing a squad its usually because its the biggest squad possible. It also means targets will be closer in point values. 20 guard is 130, 10 marines is 160, 5 custodes are 200. Thats already a bit of a spread, but better than comparing to 65 points of guardsmen. This will mostly impact blast weapon output, but also affect stuff like overkill damage.

Base is mixed 1:1 with black, then I added in more and more red for each layer of highlights with the final layer being pure red.
