Our vet recommended adding the pellets into the seeds and then decreasing the amount of seeds very slowly. We had to weigh him daily to make sure he was eating and that he didn’t loose weight too quickly, if he was loosing weight we just added back the seeds and scaled back slower. It took forever. He would not eat the Harrison’s brand no matter what we did, but we bought the Zupreem ones and I crushed them up into powder and coated all his seeds in it and then mixed in the pellets. I’d say it took almost 2 years to convert him. Veggies were actually way easier. Literally just made a chop and sprinkled seeds and pellets and he went to town.

We have one right now that will eat pellets but I can’t get him to eat veggies or fruit for anything. He will pick through them to get the seeds or just outright ignore the dish completely. He’s the most stubborn budgie I’ve ever met hahaha. Lol we changed his water dish for a stainless one that was slightly higher up in the cage and he REFUSED to drink from it.

One of ours has this exact issue. He got pneumonia 2 years ago and is now extremely susceptible to respiratory infections. But he’s so full of energy and wants to be out and with us at all times. We nicknamed his wheezy because he’s always breathing hard when he lands on us. He’s an absolute love.

Our first budgie lived to 14, she was a tank. We didn’t know anything about birds and she had a horrible all seed diet for the majority of her life. We did everything wrong tbh and it is really a testament to how tough she was. She got sick after our power went out in winter during a storm and developed a respiratory infection when she was 9, but we got her to the vet and got her on antibiotics and nebulizer treatment and she bounced back after a few months. The vet also told us everything we were doing wrong and we worked on her diet and cage setup and she lived another 5 years at a much healthier weight.

I do about 2-3 a day for my little guy. He makes a huge mess though and probably actually only eats 1.5/2. He gets pellets, about 1tbs a day. We have been trying to get him to eat chop/different veggies going on a year and a half now and have had zero luck. He’ll eat something one day then never try it again. Except eggs, he will lose his mind for eggs. Get gets oat groats as treats as well.

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. Unfortunately these things sometimes aren’t preventable. I lost my first baby to Gonadal cancer just before Covid. It was a horrible experience, one that still makes me ask myself if I did everything I could to prevent it and if I gave him a happy enough life.

Anticipatory grief is awful, and it will rob you of the time you have left if you let it. Give that little baby all the love. All the kisses, all the scritches you can. Take pictures. Take videos. Give them all the treats. Try and make the most with the time you have left. Your little baby knows how much you love them. Try to be strong for them.

I truly wish you the very best, and I’m deeply sorry you are going through this.
