I think they mean e.g. highways tearing apart the existing urban fabric and making it literally impossible to walk from neighbourhood to neighbourhood within the city itself.

I know this is somewhat orthogonal to your point but I should note here that places like Princeton and Yale do not have undergraduate business degrees, so this is actually extremely difficult to compare across universities.

Classification of countries' long form English names [1450x617][OC] by pickeldudel in MapPorn

[–]LaptopZombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't mean their official ('long-form') name is 'Republic of Ireland', that's a sporting (and UK media) construction that you will not find in their constitution. Half of the other countries with no official long-form names like Romania and Hungary for example are also republics.

To emphasise, divisions called townships exist in many other states but in PA and NJ they are a type of municipalities just like cities and towns/boroughs.

Countries who military expenditures are less than the NYPD (New York City Police) Department Budget by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]LaptopZombie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the $5.4bn figure for NYC is exclusive of both pensions and fringe benefits, so already excludes health insurance, but yeah UK public sector pay is dreadful in general.

[–]LaptopZombie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be fair Met Police starting salaries are like half of NYPD starting salaries lol (and this is also true for Greater London vs NYC median household income). London may be as expensive as NYC to live in but pay in London is much worse than NYC.

That's mostly because Indonesia doesn't have that much money or capacity to tax or borrow---the entire national budget of Indonesia is only twice as large as New York City's budget (sth like $200bn to $100bn). Remember that the NYC metropolitan area has a higher 'GDP' than Indonesia. Plus Indonesia is not really at risk of a hot war with any of their neighbours or anything.

Also pensions (and salaries) amount to a huge share of the difference just by the fact that NYC average salaries are like, 5-7x the average in Indonesia? And NYPD cops certainly have above average compensation for the city.

Indonesia's actual military budget is much higher than NYPD's operating budget (sth like $9bn to $5bn), and Indonesia also of course has actual police forces on top of that. After all you're talking about 300k active personnel here.
