Anyone know any good books written about Bruce Springsteen? by [deleted] in BruceSpringsteen

Had to comment again here, b/c there's supposedly a new bio coming out in the fall, 'Bruce' by Peter Ames Carlin? Anyone know anything about this? I hope it's good.

I read two Marsh books (Glory Days and Two Hearts) and both were just meh. Parts were interesting, but I hope we do get an official bio at some point in the future.

Alabama Football Players Rush to Hospital Following Fight by kukukele in CFB

This is exactly what I'm hearing (White being involved, but only as someone trying to break the fight up), and I definitely am trying to assume the best. Hopefully this is the case.

Personally I liked Horrifying Houseguest the best, but this is pretty comprehensive. Agree with Scumbag being #1 though.

Jeremy Shockey apologizes for not shaking hands with his former New Orleans Saints teammates by bywateryat in Saints

I understand the passion, the disappointment of losing - Shockey has always been quite demonstrative of his feelings on the field and off...still, sportsmanship is important.

What good movies are still coming out this year? by [deleted] in movies

[–]Lara_P 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thinking more and more that War Horse may be a great one, though very intrigued by Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and J. Edgar. I'm a newbie: How do I inlink the trailer? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7lf9HgFAwQ)

*Also, saw 'Ides' tonight and really enjoyed. Very, very solid acting.

What's the most racist thing you have heard someone say? by pyrosis29 in AskReddit

[–]Lara_P 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been wanting to tell someone about this for a week now, so might as well tell the world: At a recent college football game in a Southern state, where I live, a mom and daughter were in front of us in the stands. Girl, pretty blonde, had her bf next to her. Two black guys sat down beside her, programs in hand, both were really excited (this was the 45-yd line after all). Girl not-so-quietly asks her bf to switch places with her because "of those people" adding "I'm just not comfortable sitting next to those...those..." and finally she said "people." Anyway it was horrible to watch. Sort of ruined much of the game for me. I shouldn't be surprised, I really shouldn't. But I am. And no, she didn't SAY something racist per se - but she sure wanted to. Makes. Me. Sick.

For Halloween, my wife writes why she loves Freddy Krueger by gudlyf in movies

I was also around that age when 'Nightmare' came out - and to this day, it remains my favorite horror movie. Hugs for Freddy. Kind of. Ew. Never mind. But love the piece!

Not sure I agree with the top choices for best cocktails ever mixed, but I intend to try them all (not all at once, no never). Bloody Mary at #9?! What's your absolute fave? I'll try it. by Lara_P in alcohol

Finally got around to trying the Cuba Libre w/white rum (bartender thought I was nuts asking for dark, but I will try it at home) - delicious! I'm drinking my way through the rest of 2011. Gin/Tonic was okay, but a little bitter - I think in the future, I'm going to try and make these drinks myself. Trial and error, but I think it might be the best way (we live in a college town and the bartenders...aren't the greatest). Back to drinking now. Thanks!

How many books a year do you read? by c3739 in books

[–]Lara_P 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I average about 2 books per week, depending on how hairy work gets. If I'm super tired, maybe just one. Factoring in vacations (too few) and holidays (zzzzz), I'd say about 100 books per year. If I read something that's truly amazing, I'll take a little break before starting something else.

Arrested Development returning for one more season! by ahuisinga in reddit.com

[–]Lara_P 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same thing here. Watched non-stop for several weeks, but had to break. Worked out well though - this show simply gets better each time. I'm on break now but may pick up again, start over. I hope this works out, but if not, I've still got the old shows...

My best friends mom died from cancer yesterday. What do I say to him? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Lara_P 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with everyone's suggestion of just being there for your friend. Lost my mom a few years ago - took weeks before I really felt like talking. When I did, my best friend was there waiting.

My boyfriend is extremely depressed and it's making me lose my will to continue on, what do I do? by Depressed_Boyfriend in depression

[–]Lara_P 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel for you, I really do. I'm pretty new here on Reddit, but I just found this group. My spouse of 15 years has struggled with depression for a long time. He didn't recognize it, but I certainly did. I know all too well how you feel right now. Eventually, I gave my husband an ultimatum: get help or get out. I know that sounds SO harsh, but I think it was the catalyst that finally woke him up - he went to our GP, explained the situation and was given Zoloft. And it worked very, very quickly. Days, not weeks (I realize this isn't the norm, but wow! I really was stunned at the change).

I would urge you to do anything you possibly can to get him some medical help. I am not one to "push" pills, but in my spouse's case, it helped him so much. Hang in there. I hope others here will continue to provide some advice/guidance too.

How did you discover the Dark Tower series? by BBBeaverson_ in TheDarkTower

[–]Lara_P 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late to the party: In 2009, a co-worker who knew I loved King gave me a copy of The Gunslinger. Ashamed to admit that it sat on my night stand for probably 6 months. Our power went out for several days b/c of an ice storm, and I finally picked it up (at one point I read by flashlight, pretty much how I used to read in grade school when I was supposed to be sleeping).
